5) (added on) italicize foods you can't remember if you've had or not, but it seems like you should have, or you're pretty sure you have, but can't remember when.

Posting this link here so the next time someone insists that USAA banking isn't available to people who aren't related to someone who's been in the armed forces I can chide them for not doing their homework.

EDIT: LJ has now started inserting code that replaces affiliate links to a number of sites, including Amazon. Therefore, I request that if you choose to buy something from Amazon after clicking on one of my links, that you first go to the Dreamwidth crosspost and click to Amazon from there, to prevent LJ from getting the kickback instead of me. Thank you.

Sometimes a publisher will put out a book with a cover that really grabs my imagination and makes me want to read the book, even though the blurb makes me leery of it. I won't be able to stop walking by the book on the shelf, picking it up, reading the back, and putting it back.

Also, if you enjoyed [personal profile] snarp's post Today I Am a Darkover Book a few weeks back, [livejournal.com profile] papersky has been re-reading Darkover books and blogging about them over on Tor.com.

Found when reading friendsfriends (network) on DW: If you post Amazon or other affiliate links on your LJ, it *might* be replacing them with LJ affiliate links. Solution and links describing the issue at the link.

I couldn't make it do that on my IE, and didn't try logging out of FF, but figured I'd execute the fix anyway Just In Case.

ETA: The series of posts by [livejournal.com profile] shatterstripes here about it.

ETA2: Trying it on a different computer, even though I've set that fix: yup, my Amazon affiliate links are getting stripped out and replaced with someone else's. I'm going to re-post my post with links in it from today to see if it stops doing that now.

ETA3: Nope, doesn't work. I'm going to leave a message on that post about clicking the tags from the Dreamwidth post if you decide to buy.

ETA4: Fix-ish here - it will stop the changing of the affiliate links for *you*, but not for your *readers* - i.e. if someone reading your LJ hasn't implemented it and isn't blocking the Javascript that makes it work, then your affiliate link will still be changed for them. I'm just going to add a new disclaimer onto my DW crosspost footer, even though it makes it HORRIBLY LONG.

A better-organized summary of my previous post, and why you need to implement the fix, even if you don't post affiliate links yourself:

1. Livejournal has implemented a script from drivingrevenue.net that takes Amazon affiliate links and affiliate tags from a number of other companies, including eBay, strips the affiliate tag from them, and substitutes another, presumably Livejournal's.

2. This is actually in violation of Amazon TOS, as you have to disclose publicly that you are using Amazon affiliate links.

3. Normally, someone who provides a link with an affiliate tag in it would get a little bit of a kickback if you purchase an item through that link - i.e. I get from 0 - 6% of the selling price of an item on Amazon if you click through one of my links, depending on the item's cost and a few other factors.

4. Replacing my affiliate tag means I no longer get that money. It goes to Livejournal, or whoever's tag that is.

5. This mostly happens on IE and some Firefox installs. Test to see if it's happening for you - if you hover over this link you should see a "tag=telophase-20" in the URL. Then click on the link, and check the URL again. If the tag is now replaced with "tag=5336432744-20", it's affecting you.

6. Opting out of link tracking seems to defeat the script. You can stop the affiliate tag showing up for you when you read LJ by going to the Admin Console here: http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/ and putting this in it: set opt_exclude_stats 1

Dreamwidth is not doing this. I've changed my footer to ask people to click through the DW post if they want to buy one of the things I've linked to until LJ stops this. I don't post a whole lot of Amazon affiliate links, and I tend to only get about $5/month out of them, but I am Very Not Happy that LJ is taking that $5/month out of my pocket.

Check my previous post for links to discussions of this issue.

Workaround!

Ah-hah! You can fool the LJ affiliate-link-removal script (see previous two posts) by using a URL-shortening service like bit.ly!

Example: [personal profile] rachelmanija's affiliate link to the Mabinogion. If the script is at work on your LJ, then her "racmanbro-20" tag will be replaced with a number. But if I shorten the link with bit.ly first, then her tag stays when you end up at Amazon: http://bit.ly/cmwLvX

I think I'll be implementing this for any and all Amazon links I post. It'll be easier on your end than clicking through Dreamwidth to get to the Amazon page.

Now off home!
