I have created a Twitter bot that should—theoretically—tweet a random writing prompt inspired by the Cool Bits Story Generator once per hour. Follow it @RandomPrompts.

Definitely have cold. Sore throat, weird in the head in the way you are when you've got colds, and my ears are doing the weird thing they do when I have colds. And I barely managed to avert a coughing fit in the grocery store with my inhaler*, and I've already sneezed a couple of times.

As I have to work at the ref desk on Saturday, and it's a real bitch to try to change shifts with someone this close to the weekend, my current plan is to play it by ear tomorrow morning, and if I feel worse, tot ake of tomorrow and maybe Friday, then drug myself up for Saturday. We're now trying a schedule that has two librarians there, and we switch off during the day, so for half the time I'll be sequestered in my office downstairs instead of at the desk proper for eight hours. Better than it used to be.

And another thing that popped up from the Cool Bits generator:
The antagonist of this piece is a priestess, while the protagonist is a short person who kicks tremendous ass. Neither of them are motivated because they're dying anyway, so they might as well. The plot begins with blue cocktails in the palaces of Heaven. The ending includes elements of a kiss on the neck from behind and creepy pick-up lines.
I'm seeing some sort of black comedy where people die and discover the afterlife is a really horrible lounge bar.

* Yay. I am all about this, if it works, as codeine and other cough medicines don't work very well on me.

The protagonist of this story is a boy disguised as a girl who has a cloak. On the way to the story's conclusion the protagonist encounters a woman in men's clothing. This person has a black leather trenchcoat. Plot elements include zeppelins and a sense of humor, and at least one character is motivated because their country is not yet free.
I'm seeing some sort of alternate-universe steampunk WWI spy story here.

Have been adding motivations and sentence structures to the Cool Bits generator.

Now to start adding [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija's long list...

Hee!

I was just checking my stats pages and found that someone used the Cool Bits Generator to produce a drabble for [livejournal.com profile] 100_roadtrips that features Kanzeon playing with the generator. XD Meta-inspiration!

As I was messing about with a copy of the Cool Bits generator yesterday, it struck me that the one aspect of story it was missing was the why of things, in short, character motivations. Now I'm sure that there's lots of you out there who have cracktastic Cool Bits for *why* people do the things they do in stories, so list 'em off here! I'll dad them to the generator and pop in a few new sentence constructions to use 'em. :)

(In other news, my body can't decide if I'm getting a cold or if it's just serious allergies. Pfui. I hate that state of non-commitment.)

ETA: Examples of the sort of thing I'm looking for. HOWEVER: please make sure that these are cool bits for you (whether for heroes or villains), the sort of thing that will make you clutch a book to your bosom and giggle madly, and not just any motivation you can think of. :)

because they are diverting attention from something else
because of an addiction
because of an addiction to drama
by lust for an unattainable object of desire
out of a desire for vengeance
out of a desire to impress a lover
out of a desire to impress a superior
out of loyalty to a commanding officer
out of professional ambition

I check the logs on magatsu.net every day, just to see where I'm getting my traffic (quite a lot on a daily basis from seventhsanctum.com, thank you [livejournal.com profile] dragonscholar!). It also has the search terms that people use to find the site on Google and other search engines. Today it's got the usual mix of "story generator" "art prompts" and so on, and something I'm quite proud of, "best story generator on the internet". It also included "essay conclusion generator."

I so hope that someone used one of my prompts to finish their essay off with. "And in conclusion, this narrative is about rebirth. It starts in an asylum with a nice guy who doesn't finish last. The antagonist is a scholar and the plot involves elements like the texture of silk and aerodynamic martial arts fighting."

Doing a bit of ego-surfing through my stats, and found this line on an LJ tha tlinked to the Cool Bits generator:

Plot elements include martyrdom and tacos.

...placed in a separate post from the announcement so I don't have to scroll through the whole thing in every email notification to the previous post. :)

I've again done what I threatened to do and come up with a Kinkfic Random Story Generator, based on [livejournal.com profile] eliade's List o'Fandom Kinks (NSFW for text).

I pulled over 1400 elements from that list, and am mostly surprised, judging by the contents of the list as a whole, how comparatively innocent most of the prompts end up. The primary difference between this and the Cool Bits generator is that the kinkfic plot elements end up focused specifically on character interaction, instead of having a wider range.

I don't want suggestions for this one, because I spent way too much time on it already. Sorry. :) Feel free to add your own kinks to stories you pull from it.
