I love the person who totally ignored the frame-by-frame comparison and said that it was unprofessional to use anything posted on LJ as a source, and accused sub_divided of having a personal vendetta against the artist.
Man, this DESERVES fandom_wank like nothing else I've seen in a decade! O_o Pulling something like this and winning contests with it is the surest way to make every other artist's blood boil...
I could tell you the story of the guy who applied for a computer graphics job at my workplace using a portfolio lifted from every famous fantasy artist on the planet, but then I'd have to tell you how he applied at ANOTHER place I worked, at least five years later, using some of the same stolen pieces and adding a few taken from friends of mine in the industry. It was a real pleasure to take the wind out of his sails, let me tell you!
Yep. I saw that this morning. I guess some people are getting pissed now because tokyopop isn't pulling the submission. (Maybe even bad publicity is publicity.) I am just mad because it means someone (no one specifically) else's original submission didn't make it.
Yeah. But at least Tokyopop didn't realize how close it was: over on Love Manga (http://www.manga.omoikitte.com/2006/03/843/), greenapple2004 explains that the three judges hadn't actually read BotI.
And with this starting to swell up, it makes it less likely that someone will try this again in the immediate future.
Yep, I read that too. I was trying to type quickly and get to dinner so I think I was unclear. I am saying now that TP does know, people (like the last person on that thread) are getting mad it isn't being pulled, while I am upset with the actual artist for intentionally submitting and screwing someone else out of a spot.
WHY DID THEY HAVE TO LINK THE POST WITH THE LOVELESS VIDEO IN IT WRRRYYYYYY.
*hyperventilates*
...okay, I'm calm. XD It's my own for combining topics like that anyway.
What really surprises me is that there don't seem to be any other posts doing first-hand comparisons, it's all links that link to other links that link back to the same five panels you and I found. I really thought there'd be other people posting independently on this, it's such a controversial (hot) topic.
Actually, I can't believe nobody else posted independently of us. Or maybe someone did and they're just not read by anyone else, so not picked up. Hrm.
Or maybe we're just such sad Samura fangirls that we've memorized the panels. I AM PROUD OF MY BOTI OBSESSION, DAMN YOU!!
Also: I'm editing the post to link back to you. (It's in comments, yeah, but I really should have linked to begin with, just like all the people linking my post are doing. -_- I didn't think anyone besides my friendslist (many of whom are BIG FANS of Blade of the Immortal) would see that post.

WHAT THE HECK, it's no different from linking something posted in any other blog.
I have been looking at the art of BotI and Samurai Zombie for so long now that I can no longer tell where I see actual similarities or where I am hallucinating or where I can go "AAAGH I KNOW THAT BOTI POSE WHERE IS IT FROM" and not be able to actually find it in the manga. It helps that the artist is mostly lifting stuff from the first few volumes, though. :D
I am not sure about either of these. They don't look exactly alike: the shadows fall differently, the bottom one only works if you tilt it, etc. But hmm. The thing that makes me suspicious about the top one, even though the hand is different, is that the Samurai Zombie's nose slants exactly in line with Manji's nose, and then the rest of the SZ's face has been rearranged around the nose (oddly, so that it looks like his face is melting). I don't know. Am I hallucinating?
Here's a funny: the last page of "Samurai Zombie" and a mocked up version of same using nothing but Samura's artwork. I just couldn't STOP myself... :D
The forum on ANN is making me headdesk. People arguing about the source being an LJ. Then people saying that it's NOT plagiarism because they're "not identical"...I see. So, in that case, if you copy something BADLY Then it's not plagiarism either? I'm not feeding the wank by responding, but some of those people are just idiots. -_-
An even better link to throw at them would be the US Copyright Office; (http://www.copyright.gov/) there's this peculiar idea among artists that you only need to change your source by a certain "percentage" and you're legally OK, even if it's still recognizable. Which idea, to put it shortly, is bullshit. :D
What with all this Blade of the Immortal art being tossed around, I'm thinking of buying volume 1 so I can drool on that instead of on my keyboard. I've never read BOTI, despite the good reputation, because it's not my style--but that is reeeeeeeally nice art.
Heh, yup. I honestly wasn't expecting it to get this big when I posted the reviews, because while I recognized poses, I didn't pull out the books and look.
Haven't heard a thing on the intarweb from the artist, although that's hardly surprising: I'd have my head tucked well into the sand by this point, if it was me.

I expect that they're probably formulating their response now, and running it by Legal.
is it bad that I kind of want to run around going "I! I'm the one that spotted it first! Not her!"? But that would be weird.

Yep, according to this, anyway.
yes you now burn in INTERNET HELL. Eh,

Wonder if that guy is the artist's sockpuppet?

Man, if anyone starts getting any wankier, I'm taking it to fandom_wank, though. XD
