I have been looking at the art of BotI and Samurai Zombie for so long now that I can no longer tell where I see actual similarities or where I am hallucinating or where I can go "AAAGH I KNOW THAT BOTI POSE WHERE IS IT FROM" and not be able to actually find it in the manga. It helps that the artist is mostly lifting stuff from the first few volumes, though. :D
I am not sure about either of these. They don't look exactly alike: the shadows fall differently, the bottom one only works if you tilt it, etc. But hmm. The thing that makes me suspicious about the top one, even though the hand is different, is that the Samurai Zombie's nose slants exactly in line with Manji's nose, and then the rest of the SZ's face has been rearranged around the nose (oddly, so that it looks like his face is melting). I don't know. Am I hallucinating?
I don't think you're hallucinating - I think these are cases where the artist has changed just enough from the reference to be reasonable. And I rather wish he'd done that for the rest of the copied poses. His page layout is very nice, and I think that, at least, is all him.
But the face is melting wah! I agree that those two aren't as obvious/egregious lifts as the ones you and sub_divided have pointed out--I really doubt I would have ever noticed the similarities, except that both BotI shots are from the scene in volume 2 with Rin and Manji talking about Manji's sister, which is one my favorite cute passages in the series that I practically have memorized. But it does make me paranoid that if the artist drew on "Blade of the Immortal" even for casual poses / non-action sequences, what panels if any aren't copied from "Blade"?
I can't say. I know the artist is a lot different in his page layout that Samura is; Samura doesn't break the panel barriers or let the action and words spill down the page in the same way. That's what makes the artist unique and why I think if he manages to get over the stupidity involved in copying that closely, he'll have a good career. He's got talent, but as someone pointed out on of the things I read today, not confidence.
Samura's action is different, to my eye. His still poses and quiet panels were the most ripped off for this.
I am praying that the artist just stays quiet or at most communicates with like a 3-sentence statement somewhere and just quietly goes back to work on his art for next time. Or the wank will NEVER DIE.
It could be worse; he could have lifted one of Samura's Dramatic Battle Murals OMGTM. :D
It would be immensely entertaining even as it MADE ME CRY.
More people definitely would have been suspicious earlier if random inkprints of Mount Fuji starting showing up every time Samurai Zombie killed somebody.
(I knew I had a Blade of the Immortal icon somewhere! Kishimoto SO PLAGIARIZED SAMURA OMG)
