Either there's something wrong with my smoke detector or it announces that the battery is dead by causing the alarm to go off EVERY THREE HOURS. ALL NIGHT LONG. Not polite little "You need to replace the battery!" chirps, but the whole "Awake! Fear! Fire! Foes! Awake!" alarm.

THIS IS PROFOUNDLY STUPID.

Have zipped out to convenience store to buy caffeine and 9-volt battery, and replaced it. If it was the battery, it should be fine. If not, the pattern should make it go off Any Minute Now.

I wonder, perhaps, if That Creepy Guy[TM] has been websearching...

--Maintenance guy came around, had no real explanation for the reason my smoke alarm went off instead of just chirping, but changed the battery in the ceiling one for me Just In Case.

--Am very strung out from interrupted sleep.

--UPS guy came to deliver Amazon.com package, failed to knock at all and left it in front of the door.

--On the bright side, I now have The Antique Gift Shop volume 5 in my hot little hands! The mystery of whether a Korean person would twig that Something Was Not Right by the way that Mr. Yang's outer robe closes backwards from normal has not been solved, and, indeed, the mystery deepens, as you will note if you read this manhwa.

GODDAMMIT THE FUCKING SMOKE ALARM IS GOING OFF AGAIN

AND THE APARTMENT COMPLEX DOES NOT HAVE AN EMERGENCY NUMBER TO PHONE

I futzed with the battery again, and it stopped going off, but I predict I'll be doing this tonight several more times. Yes, I am NOT FUCKING HAPPY with this. I've already left a THIS WILL BE FIXED TODAY message on the answering machine at the office.

Update re: malfunctioning smoke alarm: I took the thing off the wall and found where I could unplug the wires. Problem (temporarily) solved. There are three other smoke alarms plus a sprinkler system in this apartment; I am not in the least worried about not getting notice of a fire.
