*snerk*

I'm watching the first episode of Saiyuki Reload Gunlock from the HK DVD rips that [livejournal.com profile] kintail sent me. I'd been warned about the wacky Babelfish-level translation, but it still took some time to realize that it was Yaone's name that Doku was saying every time he gasped "Eight Hundred Mice!"

I was also not sure it was possible for the production values to be lower than those for Saiyuki Reload, but they have managed to achieve that distinction.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
That's even better than the Chinese bootleg of Wolf's Rain where someone exclaims, "Impossible," only it was translated as "Flubdub and gulf!"

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
*snerk* "Eight Hundred Mice" one could see as a literal translation, but "Flubdub"?

PS

Is Sanzo picking his nose or his ear?

Re: PS

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Theoretically, it's his ear. But the production values on Reload were so bad that honestly, it could be either. XD

That icon makes me snort my drink through my nose every time is see it! Oww....*rolls on the floor laughing painfully*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Now we all know the real reason Sanzo wears the all-encompassing robes of a Sanzo priest when he rejects so much else of the priestiness. XD

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see why Kougaiji wants a piece of that.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Eight hundred mice? Dude, I'd hit that!"

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
That beats Doku's gerbils any day! XO

[identity profile] matildarose.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I need to find that page of HK One Piece screens. It's hilarious.

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You should see some of the subs on the HK Shaman King too.

Ren: Me my jet machine!

Everyone called Yoh 'Yehwang!'

[identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
BWA! That's some good subtitles, there.

Did you know that Anime-Kraze (http://www.anime-kraze.org/index.php?page=releases) has been doing fansubs of Gunlock? The first seven episodes are done, and they've got a bit more coherent subs.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. But the production values are bad enough that the subtitles actually make it watchable. :D Plus there's that whole no-P2P-filesharing thing that my ISP has going on.

I can get the gist of what's happening in the episode, so it's fine.

'Three Hundred Mice'? Man, that's better than the HK "Fullmetal Alchemist" subs that insisted on translating Ed's title as 'Square Enix'. "Here he comes, the great Square Enix!" And other such.

Ever so often I panic about someday conceivably running out of "Saiyuki" manga story, and then I think, "Well, there's always the anime!" And then I remember that this is not a good thing.

Re: *needs a Yaone icon*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
The great Square Enix!

I'm watching this show, thinking "These are NOT my Sanzo-ikkou!" I could deal with the Gensomaiden series heading off into WTF territory with Larry, Darryl, and Darryl Homura and his two henchmen, because they were kinda nifty characters with a bit of interesting backstory, albeit not as deep as if they'd been in the manga. And then there was Reload, for which I'd characterize the entire arc as filler eps, and now ... they've taken the badly-designed, dumbed-down versions of my guys that the anime had and replaced them with even more badly designed, much stupider versions.

This is almsot a parody of itself and I've only managed to get halfway through the first ep, because I keep checking LJ. XD

[identity profile] rushthatspeaks.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
We have an HK DVD set of the first Saiyuki anime that is one of the all-time great classic bad translations ever-- it has infinite rewatch value. Firstly, they got the idea that Sanzo, being a monk, had to have some kind of English-language religious title, and then, I think, they got a thesaurus and played darts. It is the only explanation. Do they choose 'Monk'? Do they choose 'Reverend'? Do they even choose 'Minister'? Nope. Rabbi Sanzo it is, folks!

They used the same dart-thrower throughout, and so 'I will not steal the Heavenly Sutra' comes out as 'I will not rapt the lections of Asgard'.

... Asgard. Right. The place with all the rabbis.

And it's even better when they're trying to be colloquial. They've provided one of our household's great pieces of useful profanity, in a comment Gojyo makes to Goku that was nowhere near as bad in the Japanese: 'What the hell are you doing, fuck monkey?'

I love HK DVD sets.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
rofl! That's far worse than the one I'm watching - well, so far, since I've only seen one episode. XD There were really only the three totally wackjob translations in it.

Rabbi Sanzo. Asgard. Fuck monkey. Man, I can smell the fic from here. XD

[identity profile] matildarose.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of the HK version of Farenheit 9/11. There, they didn't even try. They just ripped the deaf subtitles for 'Jungle Fever' and pasted it on.

http://winterson.com/2005/06/captions.html

It must be seen to believed.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There are no words. Truly. XDDD

Ok this totally slayed me!
octopedingenue: (hakkai/gojyo)

but is he Rabbi Sanzo's fuck monkey, now?

[personal profile] octopedingenue 2005-10-14 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I am now CURSING MYSELF that I didn't buy the HK boxset of all the Saiyuki anime at Dragon Con when I had the chance.

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
BWAHAHAHAHA!! *dies over and over* Rabbi!Sanzo! Now someone needs to write a fic in which Sanzo is a crabby Jewish guy presiding over bar mitzvahs and bris. I would pay good money to see that.

Really, though folks! 'Sanzo' is his title! WTF, man?

Asgard. Oh god, I think I just hurt myself laughing. There is a pun about Norse gods in there, but I can't think of it.

'Fuck monkey' is so my new favorite insult.

[identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
THAT WINS THE INTERNETS.

Oh, god. Rabbi Sanzo.

Rabbi Sanzo and the Fuck Monkey of Asgard

OK, I am on the floor HOWLING!

Re: Rabbi Sanzo and the Fuck Monkey of Asgard

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
The scary thing is that "fuck monkey" does sort of sound like something Gojyo might say.

[identity profile] herchuckness.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
*dies* I think I need to buy that version now.

[identity profile] thomasyan.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure Asgard is not a Stargate: SG-1 allusion? :)

LOL! LOL! LOL! Literally! I need a LOL!!! icon right now. But the closest I have is the "ass monk"; it's a joke from ask_the_ikkou.

[identity profile] kintail.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad you're enjoying the subtitles, because yes, the animation and storylines are so bad they made me want to cry. Instead I now have tears running down my face from laughing so hard at the comments to these posts.

*votes for you to make regular reports as you watch the rest of the crack*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, now reposted with /correct/ HTML!

Just think: you've touched the lives of so many people in an inappropriate manner by your selfless act of getting me the DVDs. XD

Reporting on them is half the fun, actually. I mean - it's all worth it just to learn of the existence of Rabbi Sanzo and the Fuck Monkey of Asgard. The world is somehow a brighter place.

[identity profile] kintail.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
