A week ago I would have gotten this perfectly. One week back in the NW and I lose MY twang. There's one word up there that I just couldn't figure out at all; let me know what else I got wrong!
XD "Jeet yet?" as I said to your other comment. It's just not possible to transcribe the proper twang in "Dangit!" so I recomend anyone reading this to listen, just to learn how to correctly pronounce it. XD
And I know you know your Texas slang, since you spelled "y'all" correctly. :D
A good example of "y'all" in the vaguely-singular sense, of course. :D
For anyone else reading this who's unfamiliar with the proper usage of "y'all", short for "you all", "y'all" is, generally plural, and when you're talking to someone by themself and say "y'all" it's understood to refer to the person's family. But "More than one of y'all" is perfectly good usage, too.
I'd forgotten that and had to listen to it again. It's "properly". XD
The dialect/slang thing is fresh in my mind because me, bitpig, and one of his friends were all talking to bitpig's Japanese foreign exchange student, telling her about the Southern dialect. She thought "Jeet yet?" for "Did you eat yet?" was funny.
I will confess to having picked up "soda" during my years in Denver and South Dakota, but a good portion of the time it's just "Coke".
I get the same thing - my mom's side of the family taught me to speak without an accent, but having come from MS & TX the accent comes out in moments of high emotion. That's gotten me more than one strange look from ex-girlfriends when arguments occurred - "Do you hear your voice right now?" *quizzical expression*
XD As an English girl who knows pretty much nothing about American accents, vocabulary re-education very much appreciated! (And y'all leave the beans out of your chilli? What's up with that?)
Proper chili does not contain beans! Sauce and meat only, and preferably cut-up meat that has tenderized and shredded under its own power from the slow cookng, and not ground beef. Now, should you wish to take your side dish of ranch-style beans and stir it into the chili along with, perhaps, cheese and sour cream, and whatever floats your boat, you may, but it is not pure chili. And proper chili isn't made with that red chili powder you get in plastic jars at the supermarket, it's made from lovingly hand-roasted and ground chiles. (Make sure you have good ventilation - that stuff will float up and make your eyes water and your throat and nasal passages burn as you're making it. XD)

And, dangit, I forgot to put in the "The thing at the edge of your acreage, along the road? Is a "barditch," not just a "ditch." XD
losing my ear?
