I found this site comparing the UK to the US just now, and the map was quite interesting. (I have no idea if the statistics are true or not) I grabbed a screenshot of the UK centered on Texas, to give you a idea of how big it is.

Just went back over the Can't Sleep Con Will Eat Me* prose bits I wrote in 2003 and posted in 2006** and ... wow, there's been so much technological change since then that I pretty much have to update every single bit of technology I mentioned. Everybody has cell phones now, not just the most with-it students. No disks, it's pretty much all flash drives now. You no longer walk all the way across campus to check your email in the lab because (a) there's probably a lab in every single building nearby and (b) you probably have a laptop or smartphone anyway. I'll have to use printing problems as the thing that the girl in the first scene bitches about, because everyone on the campus I works on comes to the library lab to print their papers instead of doing it at home (at least for the first half the semester, as we give them 200 free prints).

* If you've joined my blog in the years since Can't Sleep, it's my, [livejournal.com profile] mothoc, and [livejournal.com profile] myrialux's late unlamented webcomic. It's set in a college SF club.

** Under a filter. I thought about digging it back out and polishing it up a bit more and getting a proper beta for it, from someone unfamiliar with Can't Sleep, just to see if it sparks more ideas in that vein. We'll see.

For those of you who have been in theatre, you may enjoy the comments section of this wank, which is originally about a self-published book and an author who wants to charge agents $35 to read his book, and then the comments devolve to trading theatre stories. :)

Here we go, because I know you all wanted it: the stunning result of my two days' (so far) worth of piano blues improv classes:

http://www.magatsu.net/piano/12-bar-improv-02.mp3

I'm rather hazy on timing. :) It was done using the 12-bar blues on the left hand, and (most of the time, when I hit the correct keys), the six-note blues scale in C on the right.

Totally life-changing, isn't it?

Writers who use special software for your writing other than, say, Word: what do you use (that is compatible with Windows)? I was casting about for something that would let me organize notes and things into one file along with the draft, but OF COURSE when I'm not looking for such a thing, people post reviews and mentions all over my f-list, but when I am looking for such a thing, I can find nary a mention. (and Googling gives me lots and lots of people willing to sell me such software, but nothing giving me honest reviews...)
