I've had two pairs of jeans that I haven't worn since last summer, or maybe earlier (I can't remember exactly when I last wore them) that had been retired to the bottom drawer of my dresser, in the hopes that one day I'd be able to wear them again. I hadn't tried them on because I was afraid they'd be still too tight and I'd feel awful. But this morning, when confronted with the fact that the only clean pair of jeans was the pair that had been too big for me the day I bought them* I said what the hell and tried one pair of them on.

They're slightly too loose on me. XD I finally feel that I've lost weight. Next goal: get into the shirt I bought in England in 2003 (right before I hurt my back and my activity level dropped, thus spurring a weight gain) that I hadn't given away to goodwill because I liked it too much and kept in the vague hope that I'd lose weight.

I shall probably celebrate by having a Schlotsky's sandwich for lunch. Mostly because I've had a hard time meeting my calorie target the past 3 or 4 days and I think I need to start eating more at lunch instead of having my biggest meal at dinner.

I also tested my aerobic capacity by going up two flights of stairs to the staff break room instead of taking the elevator. Results: still lousy (I was huffing and puffing for quite a while afterward), but slightly better than usual, because my legs didn't burn quite so badly as normal (it's usually amazingly hard to take those last few steps). I also have put "get re-evaluated for exercise-induced asthma" on my List of Things to Do before going to Japan, because I think part of my huffing and puffing and coughing originated from my throat and lungs and not my general lack of conditioning. I was diagnosed with possible exercise-induced asthma about 5 years ago when I was in karate, but I never quite figured out whether it was due to asthma or the combination of out-of-shape and being worked to exhaustion every class. I think I shall attempt to force myself to go up the stairs every day and see if it changes or stays the same.

* They fit just fine in the store, but when I wore them after that, they stretched out enough to be too loose.

Yay for favorite jeans refitting! I haven't tried mine on yet, I'm still waiting.

Sounds an awful lot like exercise induced asthma to me. I have that, and ran into problems doing cardio even though I was in pretty good shape at the time. I just....couldn't ramp up the intensity without keeling over. My doctor finally figured out what was going on. Now I have a couple hits of my inhaler before working out, and it is amazing what a difference it makes. I don't take the daily asthma meds anymore, just the simple albuterol inhaler before working out.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I had an albuterol inhaler back when I was in karate, and found that two hits were enough to make me worry I was going to pass out during class. XD

I think I ran across something yesterday that said Strattera was contraindicated with albuterol, though. Hrm.

I like these jeans - they have flower embroidery up part of one leg. :)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah - yup. "Albuterol - STRATTERA should be administered with caution to patients being treated with systemically-administered (oral or intravenous) albuterol (or other beta2 agonists) because the action of albuterol on the cardiovascular system can be potentiated resulting in increases in heart rate and blood pressure."

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Makes sense, though. Both ramp up the system, if I understand them correctly. Wonder if you might be able to take one of the asthma suppressors, though? I think they work differently. Advair and the like.

If you want a really fun time, someday try reading the warning label on an epi-pen. It's...fascinating reading. It's a great mix of, well this may or may not kill you, but OTOH, you're probably in anaphylaxis so you're probably going to croak anyway, so why not try it. I'd never read anything quite like it. 8D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
So it's like looking up whatever you're sick of in the Merck Manual? No matter what you look up in it, you're going to die of it. XD

[identity profile] janni.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not positive, but I believe an inhaler isn't systemic use--it definitely isn't oral or intravenous. I remember learning about this when I started taking inhaled steroids (I also take inhaled albuterol): the effects of systemic steroids (taken as a pill) were nasty nasty; but when I take them through an inhaler, they're delivered only to the lungs, and not (mostly) the whole body--and the effects are radically different (and milder).

So check this one with your doctor. You might actually been okay.

I've managed to get to some amazing mountain views through the years, thanks in part to my albuterol inhaler. :-)

OK, thanks! I was wondering exactly what "systemic" meant after I posted that. :D

XD Thank you!

W00t! Congratulations! *cheers you on*

Yes! I just bought new pants on the weekend and that happened to me. It also doesn't help that I am an odd size right now and sizes tend to be in even sizes.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It happened to me twice recently. I had 4 pairs of jeans to wear, and two of them were too big after I got them home. They weren't falling down, but I'd have to haul them up after getting out of a car or something. And I am way too lazy and hate clothes shopping juuuust enough to not bother to take them back, since they were wearable. XD

Way to go, girl!

[identity profile] riofriotex.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I want you to know that your biking postings (and now these wonderful results) have inspired me to ask for an elliptical trainer for the big BD coming up. I used to work out on one about five days a week for 30-60 minutes a day and it helped me keep the weight off.

Re: Way to go, girl!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
THank you, and yaay! :D I'm glad to hear that my posting ends up being positive feedback all around. XD

[identity profile] urbi-et-orbi.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
... start eating more at lunch instead of having my biggest meal at dinner.

I have the same problem -- mostly because I want to save up my calories hahaha! And when I see I still have so much left, I eat loads!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
XD This week, I've been having good, light lunches and after I exercise, I've got, like, 1100 calories left. And unless I basically spoon up lard and chase it with sugar water*, it's really hard to get 1100 calories in at one sitting, especially since exercise tends to decrease my appetite a bit. My normal method of eating is really 4 or 5 smaller meals throughout the day instead of 3 larger ones.

* Which is exactly what I plan on doing at lunch today, at Schlotzsky's. XD

[identity profile] urbi-et-orbi.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, I'd save up on calories and then binge on a Sunday at a restaurant. But I find that the more I do this, the more I crave it so it's really best to do this very very very rarely. AUGH!!!!

[identity profile] m00nface.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations, it must feel great to fit into those jeans! :D And good luck with the asthma evaluation, definitely sounds like it would be best to check it out before going to Japan.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! XD It feels good, and I'm shoving away the little voice that's telling me "you weighed this much only a year ago, wait until you can fit into the English shirt before celebrating." XD

When I travel with Mom, like the times we've been to the UK recently, she tends to walk slowly unless we're in train or tube stations, at which point the crowds overwhelm her and she wants to get out of people's way as fast as possible. So she puts on an extra burst of speed. And I'm usually overheated from wearing a coat (we usually travel there in winter) and carrying or pulling luggage and we're in a tunnel that's full of people and overheated anyway, and I start huffing and puffing and coughing and, basically, having what may be a mild asthma attack. And I have to keep up with her because if one of us takes the wrong turning, we'll take forever to find each other. It's just not a good scene in all. At any rate, I know [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija and I will be doing a lot of walking and while she's perfectly nice and will slow down if I ask her to, I'd rather not have to ask her. It's been my experience that no matter how many times I ask, faster walkers unconsciously speed up again and I spend the whole trip whining "Slow down! Slow down!" and I hate that.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I had that happen to me the last time I was in Japan, because I was sick and injured. it was really depressing.

That being said, I tend not to walk that fast unless I'm hurrying to get somewhere. Especially in Japan, where there's so much coolness to gawk at.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good to hear. :) The slow-walking part, not the depressing part.

I made a decision a few years ago not to ask people to slow down anymore. Now people keep asking me, when they finally look around and realize that I'm a hundred yards behind them, why I dont just ask them to slow down. Because it doesn't work, you nitwits! You get angry at me!

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm a slow walker, i fricken hate it. worst, i'm a toilet monster. people hate going on vacation with me, ANYWHERE.

(though, i recently found my best friend's best friend is a toilet monster too, so i no longer feel so bad everytime we stop somewhere im like HAY GUYS, POTTY BREAK).

i did exercise today!!!! why!? because I TOO HAVE A PAIR OF PANTS I WILL ONE DAY FIT BACK IN, IN MY DRAWER.

except i probably won't wear them because they're red camoflauge and about 40 inches wide at the bottom.

oh,
to be a 16 year old again, rofl.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
People I drive with get irritated at the way I calculate my route so as to take advantage of as many places to stop and go to the bathroom as possible. XD I don't always use them, but some trips I gotta stop lots. XD

yaa! You can save them for parties! They can be your PARTY PANTS!

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
haha i can only imagine when i drive (IF EVER) and i stop EVERYWHERE. (that'll be my next goal. uh. stop being scared and learn to drive. maybe.)

but YEAH. party pants. gosh, they're really funny. i wish they were still in style, ALAS.

this is NOT a late 90s rave, as much as i'd like it to be.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't drive either. I wasn't a bad driver, but I failed the test miserably.

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
i'm probably bad. and fits of anxiety probably would take me over ;o;.

though, i should try,

MAYBE.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry about it too much. I was crying pulling into the testing center. I'm sure I will get my license one day, but I know I can't do it right now.

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
yeah i'm trying not to. it just impedes my abilty to have a decent job at this moment, but, maybe i'll move to a big city and not have to drive.

and now perusing your info. I MUST HAVE A LIBRARY THING TOO.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. I love mine. The lifetime subscription is one of the best things I have ever bought.

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
im going to need it at the rate i'm gong. hahah

[identity profile] cchan5000.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats on fitting in your pants! Now if I could just get my dad to start exercising a bit...

I love taking stairs as a test of myself, so I say keep at the stairs instead of the elevator. That is, of course, unless you really have trouble breathing. If it is that bad, go see a doctor about it.

There is something nice about making it up one more flight of stairs. Every now and then I go to the library and hike to the top (8 stories) to make sure I'm still in decent shape. If I can't make it easily, I know it is time to ramp up the exercise routine again.

Go you!!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! The stairs are the hardest part, mostly because when I go to the next floor, I ahve to be somewhere, at a meeting or the ref desk, and am immediately meeting people and having to explain why I'm panting is annyoing - for some reason nobody every connects "fat" to "out of shape" and it puzzles them why I'm panting so hard after I've gone up stairs. I did like being diagnosed with the asthma, though - I could tell people "exercise-induced asthma" and for some reason tey all understand it better then me going "I came up the stairs." "Why would that do anything?" "Because I am OUT of SHAPE!" As if you couldn't SEE that. *grumble*

[identity profile] vilgsacolin.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! That's exciting! Yay! Party time!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :D

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Congrats. I just found a stash of my slacks from work. I'm a little scared to try them on so I'll wait a month or so.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
XD Thanks!
