I love taking stairs as a test of myself, so I say keep at the stairs instead of the elevator. That is, of course, unless you really have trouble breathing. If it is that bad, go see a doctor about it.
There is something nice about making it up one more flight of stairs. Every now and then I go to the library and hike to the top (8 stories) to make sure I'm still in decent shape. If I can't make it easily, I know it is time to ramp up the exercise routine again.
