Sneak preview...ish

I've been grappling with thumbnails for Spindrift, the Next Thing that [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija and I have been working on, and naturally since I'm doing this, what I really want to do is draw the characters. XD

This is in progress - it's not finished yet, because I still need to clean up the inking, work out where the faces look weird and fix that, and color in the other guy's hair - it's all supposed to be black.

Please also do not take their appearances to be the final versions - they're not quite right, and I'm working on getting them to fit my original character designs. Haven't quite made it yet. :)

Meet Manoj, with the grin, and Rinchen, with the knife. Rinchen's hair isn't that girly, really. Think less "sorority girl" and more "tangled mess."

Will our two protagonists get over their innate differences to get together, or will they realize that they can't stand the sight of each other? You'll just have to wait until I draw it Spindrift is published. Coming soon, to an A-Kon near you!

I love the position they are in!
Its such an original idea that I would never have thought of that.
Very cool character designs, even if they are not final.

I'd love to read it when finished.
Or else just stare at the beautiful drawings of pretty men ;)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I completely ripped the pose off from an old photo (http://magatsu.net/gallery/v/Kalaripayattu/madhavan9.jpg.html) demonstrating a disarming technique used in the Indian martial art kalaripayattu/kalaripayat. XD It seemed somehow appropriate.

[identity profile] redsnowpenguin.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
ehhhh~ Some of the fighting poses on that site looks so full of joy~ O_O
This one, for example: http://magatsu.net/gallery/v/Kalaripayattu/Image001.jpg.html

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I know! It seems that 75% of the time in kalaripayattu is spent in the air, with arms and legs akimbo. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
You'd think! I think it's the same phenomena as when you look up Shotokan publicity shots, you'd think every other move is a jumping side thrust kick. I never saw anyone jump at all when I watched kalari classes for several days before getting violently ejected from the school, but that's another story, never mind.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone wants to take shots of the jumps, obviously. XD I figured that real fighting wouldn't involve that much jumping, because they seemed to leave themselves wide open to disembowelment unless both people were jumping at the same time. Sort of like Chinese opera style kung fu like you see in the movies as opposed to real fighting-type kung fu.

You will, one day, have to tell me about getting violently ejected from the school. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I approached the handsome thirty-something man whom I thought was the sensei and asked for his permission to observe the classes and take photographs. He said sure. So there I was, peacefully observing, but he apparently did not explain to the students what I was doing, including Evil French Girl. Nor did he mention the matter to his father, the grandmaster. DA-DA-DA-DOOM!

Evil French Girl proceeds to rat me out to the grandmaster, whom I had not previously known existed. Next thing I know a very tall and fit-looking old man is looming over me, telling me in no uncertain terms to get out and never come back, before he THROWS ME OUT. I fled in such a hurry that I left my camera behind, and had to slink back the next day to retrieve it, skulking like a ninja until I spotted Nice Sensei. Who returned my camera and apologized, saying that his father, who had very recently turned over the school to his son, was a bit crotchety and he hadn't expected him to come to the school. But in case he did, I still couldn't come back.

Grooving on the pose hardcore!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
As I just told [livejournal.com profile] cyancat, I ripped it off (http://magatsu.net/gallery/v/Kalaripayattu/madhavan9.jpg.html) from a photo of a kalaripayattu disarming technique. XD

[identity profile] benchilada.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's not ripping it off if you tell people that...you're...ripping it off...

Is it?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
We are a full-service manga team: you get both pretty boys and philosophical conundrums!

[identity profile] benchilada.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I love 'em both!

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, any chance it will be available outside of A-kon?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Naturally! We wouldn't dream of limiting our market disappointing our fans!

[identity profile] darkelf105.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hooray! That makes me happy :).

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome. Do you think it will be around the same price and such as PBR?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. Might even be a bit less, since it's got fewer pages, but don't quote me on that. :)

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Even better!

[identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, very pretty. I'm really looking forward to this.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet! Love the pose. What's the model for the knife?

I, of course, since I need to be finishing a Tokyopop adaptation before Thursday, have been busy trying to come up with cover copy for the back flap of Spindrift.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! The knife is base on the one in the picture I ripped the pose from, linked in the comments above. XD I'd spent way too long researching to find a pose, and I didn't want to do anything else but draw. :)

Glad to know that I am nt the only one not doing what I'm supposed to do! XD

[identity profile] maiteoida.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, nice. :D Did you ink that by hand, by the way?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
THank you! And yup, using Microns, and trying and failing miserably to ink in the style of One Thousand and One Nights. XD

[personal profile] oyceter 2007-02-12 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! I knew it!

I saw the picture and thought, "Wow, [livejournal.com profile] telophase has been reading that lately, huh?"

Aka, I don't think you failed too bad if I could figure it out.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So my three previous posts about it didn't prime you to think that? XD
oyceter: teruterubouzu default icon (Default)

[personal profile] oyceter 2007-02-13 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not at all! ;) What would ever make you think that?

Truly, it is the POWER of your ART!

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*Beautiful* manwha inks. Beautiful. I love the way you weighted the lines, so lush and yet clear. You've still got your beautiful eyes (one of my fav bits about your personal style) and then more manwha mouths--very lovely combo. I love it.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I adore manhwa mouths, it's one of the hallmarks of the general style that really speaks to me. :) (er, pun really unintentional) I want to do more on the eyes, but I think I tend to do them too small to really make them look good and not like they put on too much eyeliner, and I'm not really into making the eyes much bigger.

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the style these are drawn in!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
THank you! XD

[identity profile] azure-reverie.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, this looks lovely. I love the expressions on their faces.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! XD

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that pose is awesome.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! *takes credit although she took it from a photo* XD

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you still picked the pose! Make the blond guy look more like Julius Caesar.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hee. :D He's not blond, muahahaha, I just haven't finished coloring it in. XD And he's Tibetan! XD

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
And "Caesar" was a Roman. Your point? :D

PS

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
You should put this up on Deviant Art. And also on your Tpop blog and then link to the stupidest comments.

Re: PS

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'll do that when I'm actually finished with it. XD
