Linkblogging

Interesting article on the business side of the U.S. anime market, from Fortune magazine.

[livejournal.com profile] sartorias and her commentors are pondering the age-old question of gender relations, mosre specifically, who does and who does not subscribe to the old adage that men and women cannot be platonic friends (partly generational, partly cultural).

And combining elements of the two links above, we have [livejournal.com profile] louiselux bending her mind and her poll-making skills to the eternally important question of "Is Sanzo a virgin?" Go vote! The fate of the free world is at stake! (a small followup post, in which we learn a disturbing fact about Hakkai).

The _Fortune_ article cracks me up for italicizing manga but not anime.

Heh. It bugs me a bit when it's italicized because ti me it's not this wacky foreign unfamiliar word, but it drives me up a wall over on Love Manga, where the guy there calls it Manga.

Wow anime must be making a pretty big splash for it to be in Fortune magazine now =O_O= I'm not really a big fan of ADV nor of the fact that they're using the tactic of getting "close" to the fans to make profit, but I guess better to have them on our side than against us ne?

That guy's idea of letting fans be able to download an episode for 4 bucks from ADV's website instead of buying a DVD for 30 is awesome though, if they can get that to somehow work, god it'd be like a dream come true =*-*=

I would totally spend 4 bucks an episode to be able to do that.

When ADV thought a Scooby Doo-esque series called Ghost Stories would be a dud, it issued a version with an intentionally inaccurate translation of the script [...] knowing that would stir powerful passions. Authenticity being the Way of the Otaku, fans obliged by erupting in a furor. Then they ran out to buy the DVDs to assess the damage.

Ahahaha. Why am I not surprised? Well actually, I am a little bit - I certainly wouldn't buy a dvd because I'd heard the translation was off, so I'm suprised that it actually worked to increase sales. But still, they deserve credit for their insight I suppose. And it's interesting to see the Fortune article go into depth about the fansubbing process and the tolerant, if not actually positive, attitude of the industry towards them.

I can't believe the sheer amount of money people spend on DVDs. Maybe back in the day when you couldn't get them any other way, but now that Netflix exists and even Blockbuster is getting into the rental-by-mail gig ... why spend $20+ for three to five episodes?

[identity profile] herchuckness.livejournal.com 2005-11-30 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. I buy my absolute favorite series when I can afford them, but I still grumble about the $10-per-episode thing. What pisses me off is that it's not as if they can't fit 2-3 times that amount of episodes onto a dual-layer dvd, but that they just don't. Every anime disc I've ripped has only used about 55% of their allotted 9gb, leading me to believe it's a marketing decision rather than a technical limitation.

in which we learn a disturbing fact about Hakkai

Is there anything about Hakkai that isn't disturbing?

(Not that I don't love his homicidal creepy smiling-self to death, mind you...)

Point.

As always, your links lead to amusing and/or interesting things. And through them, I discover more interesting links. I should have known Sanzo would go commando...

I thought Sanzo's answer about taking over someone else's body was interesting. The others are thinking about flying or playing around, while he's thinking that he hates people making him do things so he wouldn't want to do that to anyone else. Underneath all the threats and tendency toward physical abuse is some fairness. *g*
