Meet the Sergeant

The Sergeant's purpose is to obscure direct view into my office from the window next to the door. The Sergeant is a Japanese peace lily that I purchased after looking for plants that thrive in low-light conditions and finding out that peace lilies can often thrive under nothing but florescent light. And once I found that out and remembered that it featured in Hot Fuzz OH COME ON OF COURSE I GOT ONE.

He is named Sergeant Nicholas Angel after Simon Pegg's character. He is also kind of huge because they didn't have any smaller ones that I could find.

Wow. Privacy. What an amazing concept.

My first 5 or so years here were in a cube in a room that I shared with 2 other cubes. Which seems okay, except that (a) my back was to the door and (b) we were the closest office to the loading dock door, which meant that we were, in essence, the doormen for the building because every single maintenance worker or delivery person who needed to leave the building stuck their head in and asked us to open the door for them. ARGH.

I had one named Frederick in university. I had to buy a plant for drawing studies and chose him because they are good at filtering air. When I came back to Nova Scotia I bought one and named it dev. He did so well until I got Lydia who destroyed him. Now I have what remains of dev mixed with another one.

I put up vinyl cling film on my window. No damage, removes in an instant, and still lets light through.

I wanted a bit of warning that someone's going to knock on my door, hence partial, instead of total, obscuring. If I end up deciding differently I'll move the Sergeant over to the filing cabinet next to me and find a poster or something to cover the glass.

Oh, I feel you. Mine is rice-papery, so I can clearly see if someone's outside my door, but they can't really tell what I'm doing, since I regularly leave the lights off, like a horrible little mole person.

The office has a motion sensor--which is aimed just to the left of my desk, not at my desk, so it turns the lights off during the day if I haven't got up in a while--so I need to figure out how to defeat the sensor when I want the lights off. But I can't put my nice lamp on my desk until I get the monitors up on the monitor arms (and my hardware-manager coworker is swamped right now, so I can't ask him for help yet), as there's no room for it, so I'll hold off on that for a while.

It's too huge to be named Nicholas Angel! :;ducks::

Maybe, but you'll note it's sticking its nose into everyone's business!
