ARGH
Latest Wordpress update broke the way the theme I made displays category posts (i.e., the list of categories gets a 404) so guess what I get to spend Labor Day doing? Yes, that's right, recoding a *&^*^& theme! Because now the ConDFW website doesn't display a nice list of guests when you ask it to, instead it displays a 404 page.
It's definitely fault of the child theme I coded--I've checked all the plugins and its not them, and it works when I deactivate the child theme and stops working when I re-activate it. Man, I don't even know where the hell to start looking to find the problem. :P

Second thought: look through the theme's functions.php file for anything that looks like:
add_action('pre_get_posts', 'some_function_name_here')
(pre_get_posts is used to alter the list of posts before it's displayed; see also (http://codex.wordpress.org/Custom_Queries#Category_Exclusion).)
Third thought: see if there's more than one loop (http://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop#Multiple_Loops) in the category.php file.

First: yup, did that, no change.
Second: there is one there which checks for sticky posts and excludes them from the home page query.
Third: no multiple loops as far as I can see.

I think it's also reverted back to the way the home page was before you kindly recoded it to allow the first post below the sticky post to display the entire post while the rest display excerpts: that first post is now an excerpt again, so my internal link text makes no sense. :D (When I deleted the home.php file: no change in that, then I reinstated it: still no change).

EDIT: Found the problem with the category pages....Dan hadn't put anything in the custom alphabetizing field and it was choking on that! Adding that back in fixed it. ARGH.
Now to bang my head against that excerpt/content issue...
