Here's a question that's bothered me off and on ever since I had a friend whose dad made her wash all the dishes in hot soapy water before putting them in the dishwasher many years ago. In *my* family, the idea was pretty much - if you have to wash it in hot soapy water before putting it into the dishwasher, you've got a crummy dishwasher and might as well not bother using it.

I'll use hot soapy water occasionally if I've got stubborn stuff that needs to get off, but for the most part, I rinse to knock the chunks off and then put it into the dishwasher. And don't seem to be ded from badly-washed dishes yet.

[Poll #551944]

And in other news, the DaVinci Code-debunking program on Discovery right now is hosted by Tony Robinson. Score!

It depends on how badly encrusted with food or whatever the dish is. X3 Normally, I might give more sticky items a light rinse before putting it in the dishwasher, so that it'll come away easier. Otherwise, I just put them straight in, or wash and towel dry.

It also depends on how lazy I feel. :3

(And yay Tony~!)

:) With my mom's dishwasher, it's pretty hardy, so I'll give things a minimum slosh under the faucet and put them in. I don't trust apartment dishwashers, and tend to give dishes a swipe or two with a sponge before putting them in. The only reason they get soap is that I'm currently using one of those things where you put soap in the handle and it comes out as you use it, but it's not because I think dishwasher stuff needs it, it's because I'm too lazy to have more than one thing for washing with. XD

Well, if I *had* a dishwasher anymore, no I wouldn't...rinse quickly, yes. Wash twice...why?

Ahh, how I miss my dishwasher....*sigh*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
P-shaw! Excuses!

I've run into the occasional person who washes in hot soapy water before putting them in, and the one person I asked, he said that it was because he had a dishwasher that wasn't very good. And at the time I didn't think to ask why he bothered with the dishwasher at all.

He also claimed to be a master at stuffing the dishwasher, which was probably a good part of his problem: if it's overstuffed the water can't circulate and get to your dishes.

My old roommate was like that...it's one thing to Tetris-pack your closet, another to Tetris-pack the dishwasher. And she would wonder why she still had crap on her dishes later...

I was in a road safety video with Tony Robinson once!

Er... okay. Not that interesting. But he is brilliant. :)

*fangirls you* No really, I love him on Time Team and thoroughly envy you. XD Yes I am a geek.

*_*

I saw his one-man show the day the Da Vinci programme first aired over here and he had a brilliant rant about it. Sooo funny - and yet he really knows his stuff, he's not like one of these presenters who just reads from autocue without knowing what the fuck he's saying.

And he was really great with the kids we shot the video with. Spent ages doing bits of 'Blackadder' and 'Maid Marian' for them and signing autographs. *_*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
XD Cool! I'd read that he was involved with local archaeology stuff before he started with Time Team, and he's done a few other historical documentary-type things, and it seems that he's really interested in all this stuff. Yay.

He's done a great series here of 'The Worst Jobs in History' which he did a lot of the research for himself. A lot of his one-man show was sending a strong (though very funny) message about how we always take the essential working man/woman in society for granted.

Okay, I'll stop spamming you with the Tony!love now. ._.

I run them under water, usually hot, and most times either give a scrub with the brush or a wipe with the cloth. I basically don't put them in with any visible food on them

a) because my dad used to have a terrible dishwasher and I'm in the habit, and

b) even with good washers, if food was stuck on BEFORE you ran it through a hot dishwasher and then blasted it with hot dry air, it's going to be ten times worse aftewards. *g*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to only have problems with stuck-on food when I overload the dishwasher.

And since I put off doing dishes as long as possible, that happens far more than it ought to. XD

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
If the dish is really sticky or encrusted with food, I'll give it a quick scrub before putting it in the dishwasher, or I'll just wash it by hand to make sure I get all the junk off. But I never worry about the sanitation aspect of it. Our dishwasher gets the water really hot, so I've never worried about that. It does seem weird to full-on scrub the dishes and then put them in the dishwasher.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. But I've run into at least three people over the course of the past fifteen years who wash with full-on hot and soapy water, and then use the dishwasher, and it just looked to me like wasting energy.

[identity profile] gweniveeve.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom basically teaches me to rinse things off in the sink, rinsing food into the garbage disposal. We never use soap for that, I don't believe. If it's a large cooking pan, we'll fill it with water to prevent it from getting cheese stuck to the side if it's not washed right away.

I never understood the point of hot SOAPY water for dishes, either. I suppose it does depend on the dishwasher.

[identity profile] janni.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't have a dishwasher, but if I did I wouldn't waste time scrubbing the dishes in the sink as well--avoiding that is the whole point of getting a dishwasher!

Some folks are way too paranoid about dirt.

[identity profile] badnoodles.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything dishwasher safe gets a good rinse under tepid water and a couple of swipes with the brush to get most of the food debris off. My dishwasher has a drain that backs up easily, so it's vital to get most of the chunks off.

My good knives, my Calphalon pots, and anything left after the dishwasher is full gets hand washed.

[identity profile] obviouslyanon.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't have a dishwasher, but when I did I was way too lazy to do that most of the time. If they didn't clean right, I'd do them by hand.

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My dogs are my dishcleaners. They do a great job of it too! I let them at the dishes and then I toss them in the dishwasher. Save for super oniony stuff or anything involving chocolate or excessive spice, they're not picky.

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Like I need more work?
;p

Interesting fact: I eat healthier now that I have a dishwasher.

AHAHH! And WHY did my rage icon get selected? Sorry. I'm not rageriffic right now.

I've never met another Tasmanian who owned a dishwasher. It's considered to be a very American thing, or only for people who live in big cities. My big-city-type parents got a dishwasher in their house to prevent arguments over who had to wash the dishes on any given night. Now, whenever I visit them, we just all sit around arguing over who has to load the bloody dishwasher.

In my house, we just throw the dishes in the sink at night, then act suprised when they're still there in the morning.

[identity profile] kurobahikaru.livejournal.com 2005-08-14 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I got used to washing dishes at a job I had, and actually prefer to wash them by hand, as I was told when I was younger if I didn't load the washer properly the glass stuff could break.

Of course, being a lazy bum, I'd much rather use paper and plastic and throw it all away. >:D

I will soap off baked on ick. my dishwasher is good but not great. It came with the rental house, soooooo

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I have never had a dishwasher.

[identity profile] fourthage.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't wash, but I'll soak in hot, soapy water when I'm entertaining. Throw the dishes in until everyone leaves, then load the dishwasher. It prevents any crusty stuff and not having dishes strewn everywhere helps with after-party cleanup.

We don't have a dishwasher; if we did, I might rinse, but I certainly would prewash with hot, soapy water. Sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

[identity profile] i-smile.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
You people with your high-tech machines...! :D I (have to) wash by hand. I do wash them twice, though--once to get all of the visible stuff off and to wipe around any edges that might have got spit on them, and once to make sure it really is clean (and then a rinse under hot water to get any trace of lingering soap or dirt off)--so I suspect that I might wash them off before putting them in the dishwasher, if I had a dishwasher. (Because I am compulsive about the cleanliness of things I put in my mouth.)

[identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
My grandmother washes her dishes before letting the dishwasher wash her dishes. I suspect that this is because she was in school just as they were starting to teach about germs and parasites in health and home ec type classes, so she cooked the heck out of meat and washed the heck out of dishes.

[identity profile] literaticat.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I am too poor for this "dishwasher". I barely have plates. I eat with my hands like a savage.

But I wash my hands in hot soapy water!

[identity profile] seiyojin.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have a dishwasher, my family is too poor (that and we have nowhere to put one). If I did have a dishwasher though I don't think I'd bother unless food was really encrusted on it, as the whole point of a dishwasher is to not wash the dishes yourself. :)
