There’s this service called Bubbli (at bubb.li) that allows you to use your iDevice to capture your surroundings in a 360° bubble that you can then move around too look at. I just tested it out on the main room of the hanare (guest house) that we’re staying in in Arashiyama, a suburb of Kyoto. It doesn’t handle straight lines close up to well, and I tended to move the phone too fast when it was pointing down so the crud we’ve piled on the table is out of focus, but somehow I think that’s OK. :). Try it out and let me know what you think, and I’ll try to capture a few more. (I turned off the location tagging since this is a private house and I think the owners would prefer it not be on.)

Miyajima Island on Wikipedia: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itsukushima

On December 31st, we spent the afternoon and early evening on Miyajima (“Shrine Island,” a nickname for Itsukushima, its name) because they have a fire-prevention ceremony in which people set giant torches on fire and parade them up and down the seafront.

Sorry to say, there are no pictures of fire in this post. This is the first part of our day there.

The wind is blowing and knocking snow onto the roof with a thundering sound. Might be a night for earplugs!

Trying to reply to comments on the travel blog and for some reason it’s not letting me–the blog owner!–post them. Rest assured, we read and appreciate every one!
