Worth reading further?
Mar. 13th, 2013 09:25 amI am currently reading Mr. Churchill's Secretary, mostly because the title of the sequel, Princess Elizabeth's Spy, sounds interesting, but it's annoying the fool out of me. Reasons:
1) there is a Big Big Seekrit[tm] about the protagonist's father that everyone but the protagonist knows and it seems there's this big conspiracy not to tell her, and it just doesn't work for me.
2) the heroine is of British nationality, although raised in Boston by her aunt and thus seen as nearly American by all the other characters, and several times gives stirring nationalistic speeches about the necessity of fighting the Nazis to Brits waffling about the need for war, enough that I can't help but think "What These Honkies Need is a Honky."
3) head-hopping within scenes. Not a tremendous amount, but enough to occasionally make me backtrack to figure out who's the POV of the scene in particular. I know this doesn't bother some people, but I hate it.
Has anyone else read it? Is it worth it? (Is the sequel worth it?)
