(I note that the more critical reviews were primarily complaining (a) of the lack of COPYRIGHTED familiar characters and (b) that the software on the CD was a demo version. I do have to wonder at the reviewer who complained that the patterns weren't arty enough - didn't she see the cover? I always assume the cover is representative of what's inside and don't assume the insides are better. Also, a reviewer complains that it's not for beginners and another complains that it's for beginners.)

([livejournal.com profile] octopedingenue also links to Manga in Stitches Designs. :D)

John Cleese explains football soccer to Americans.

Lenny Kravitz crashes a church youth group. They were in New Orleans, singing off of Jefferson Jackson Square, and started in on Kravitz' "Fly Away." They didn't know that the man himself was at a restaurant within earshot, and he strolled over, then joined in.

Did you ever want an AT-AT for a pet?

Also, photos of a crane chick wearing booties.

Hacking Timbuktu by Stephen Davies. I read an ARC of this YA novel via NetGalley.com - it's due out in the States in November, but is already out in the UK, from what I understand.

In 14th century Timbuktu a young Dogon thief, Akonio Dolo, steals quite a lot of gold, hides it, and leaves behind a cryptic clue as to its whereabouts before dying. In the modern day, Danny is a 16-year-old Australian computer whiz living in his own apartment in London (on his parents' dime, he admits) who gets dragged into the treasure hunt when one member of group calling themselves the Knights of Akonio Dolo tries to rope him into hacking into a server in Timbuktu, where a manuscript scanning project has discovered the clue Akonio Dolo left behind. It seems everyone who comes into contact with Danny wants the gold and thinks Danny has the ability to get the clue and solve the riddle, so in the end Danny decides he has to do so in order to stop everyone.
