...why is it that people absolutely insist on shortening your name when you are CAREFULLY signing your emails back to them with your full name? I finally just added a parenthetical (I go by Stephanie, not Steph, thanks) after my signature today, after firmly tamping down the impulse to just shorten my correspondent's name, which I decided was probably going to be more obnoxious than a note like that.

There are only a few people I don't mind shortening my name, my mother and grandparents included,* and my coworkers are none of them.

* Mostly because I fought a losing war over that for twenty years.

WOrking away on coding a working mockup of the new library home page, and spend a good long amount of time getting the CSS dropdown menu to work, and it works quite nicely.

Then I happen to notice that it doesn't work in IE 8. 7, yes. Google Chrome, yes. Firefox 3.5.2 and 3.0.5, yes. IE 8, no.*

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH

* The menu drops down nicely, but the highlighting as your mouse moves over the subsequent links doesn't follow - it stays at the first link. I now have to go put different fake links into each of them so I can see if the actual links work OK and it's just the highlighting, or if that's also part of the problem. ARGH

...in my previous post: the discovery that there is an actual META tag I can put in the header to force IE8 to render pages as if it is IE7. It is clumsy and I don't like it, but dammit, I'll do it and worry about fixing it properly later.
