Kitten!

I really INTENDED to go to bed an hour ago, as I had a minor migraine and popped a Relpax, but made the mistake of opening my f-list and got sucked back into reading the Great Cultural Appropriation Debate of DOOM Part 2.

And decided that what I needed, and what some of you might appreciate, is a cleansing picture of my kitten being cute.

What Sora likes to do when he gets tired is come find me, and if I'm on the computer, he'll jump up and place his paw on my chest beseechingly, which I have learned means PICK ME UP AND CUDDLE ME NOW. This is what it looks like from my POV:

And this is to show you how far backwards his head is:

AND THIS IS THE MIRACLE:

See! Nobody in that picture is biting anyone else, scratching anyone else, attempting to disembowel anyone else, or hissing, growling, or yowling at anyone else. PEACE BROUGHT ON BY LOW TEMPERATURES.

They stayed there long enough to shift positions, even. When [livejournal.com profile] myrialux showed up so we could go do lunch or whatever it was we did, Sora had managed to burrow himself under Nefer.

And he looks even sillier from this angle.

:D

Awwww...

I had a breakthrough with my cats too, today - Neko (my oldest, who's never been all that approving of the rest of these interlopers I keep bringing in) was sleeping on the bed next to one of the two new kittens.

Awwww! Sora looks so tiny next to Nefer. I'm glad they're getting along well.

(Oh lord, there's a Part 2? Or is it still the same when-is-a-pooka-not-a-pooka-triggered one from last week?)

Nefer looks...tolerant. XD And Sora!sprawl is ADORABLE.

Part 1 was a year or so ago. :) Part 2 was still raging as of last night.

Awwwww! He looks so adorable and tiny all squished up to Nefer!

[identity profile] elfiepike.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
oh RIDICULOUS adorableness. these totally brightened my day, you are 100% correct. ♥

Awwwwwwww!

She has decided that he must be OK because he is stripey! (And warm.)

He's so blissed out! "Big Warm Kitty Likes Me!"

So cute!! They even have similar forehead markings!

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, Nefer looks like she's baaarely tolerating him still.
Grumpy and cute!!!

[identity profile] emtigereyes.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely cute. I'm betting Nefer just rolled over onto Sora, and he knew better than to fuss... he'd lose the source of warmth.

Eep, the cultural appropriation debate.

I'm kind of confused, though, because I looked through your f-list in search of the cultural appropriation discussions you were talking about, but it seems like most of the people using the phrase are just talking about racism in culture, rather than instances of appropriated culture (the debate I'm used to reading of "people should only listen to the music, wear the clothes, and eat the food, etc. of their own culture").

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-01-19 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because it started with a discussion of appropriating culture in fiction and getting it wrong or right.

And then exploded. Here's the roundup (http://aqueductpress.blogspot.com/2009/01/great-cultural-appropriation-debate-of.html). Elizabeth Bear's post, the second one on the list, is the flashpoint for this round of the debate.

(Not shutting down discussion entirely - if it's in another post it's fair game, but THIS post is off-limits to anything pertaining to the debate.)

Ah, a very well written piece. It seems the debate comes up when someone has a very negative reaction (http://seeking-avalon.blogspot.com/2009/01/open-letter-to-elizabeth-bear.html) to Elizabeth's post?

But I'm even more confused now, because the debate really isn't talking about anything at all in, say, Wikipedia's entry on what encompassesCultural Appropriation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_appropriation). I think maybe this should be called the Great Diversity In Fiction Debate Of DOOM, since it doesn't sound like anyone's saying you shouldn't ever write a character who's from a different culture.

(In other words, I guess I'm debating what the debate is actually about, lol.)

What's you're missing is history: Part I of the debate started with a cultural appropriation in writing panel at Wiscon, which attracted some online commentary that exploded. There's always lots of race and cultural appropriation debates going on online, but this achieved the status of Part II because it's so wide-ranging and has many of the same participants.

In case what you're questioning is *me* calling it that: I didn't name it.

If what you're questioning is why others are calling it that: when many, many people across the internets are calling it one thing, and they have the participation and history to back it up, can someone who hasn't read the arguments in question really be able to define it better than the participants?

...since it doesn't sound like anyone's saying you shouldn't ever write a character who's from a different culture.

And what you're missing is the large numbers of Clueless Folks [TM] in responses who are complaining that they're being told just that, the responses saying no, we're saying you should do your research first, and then the Clueless Folks replying well, I can't do it if you don't tell me what it's like, and the many responses saying it is not our job to educate you, it is your job to educate yourself and we've already provided the links to the resources where you can start, and then the Clueless Folks replying well, obviously you're not interested in fixing the problem, then.

And I'm shutting down this discussion on this post: the entire POINT of the post was NOT to have this debate here, but to provide a respite.

Sorry, I didn't mean to start a debate...I was actually joking about "debating the debate," commenting on the ridiculousness of what I was saying, but okay. Sorry sorry.

And for some reason every time I respond to one of your messages via email, the captcha makes it start a new thread. I didn't mean to post again there.

The whole thing is full of very high emotions right now, and there are enough people jumping on the failboat by missing the point and falling into the same traps of power and privilege that this questioning is coming across as dismissive of the very real hurt and anger there.
