I saw that on [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily. Freaky, ain't it?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, you keep thinking that there is nothing in manga that can make you wtf?! anymore, and then Japan throws something like this at you.

I mean GIANT CLOWN-PANTS-WEARING GUITAR-STRUMMING WAVE-RIDING MEXICAN SATAN!

[identity profile] keelieinblack.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I wonder if mangaka get ideas by throwing something heavy at a bookshelf and mixing together whatever falls off. "A copy of the Bible, books on Croatia and Mexico, and a little sea turtle keychain...? Eureka! I've got it!" Like the low-tech version of a Plot Generator.

Uh, not that there's anything wrong with that method. XD

Why wasn't this around when I was stuck in religion classes?

Ah, so you'd know where to find the manga [livejournal.com profile] lnhammer and I want to read--the story of how Jesus and his disciples used mecha to fight the Roman Empire.

I mean, the standard setup for a manga is already there: Jesus as the noble mecha pilot, Judas as his angsty second in command. It's so obvious that surely someone's done it already.

Or they will. And when they do, we want to read it. :-)

Oh, Japan.

And here I thought nothing could top the Jesus and Buddha flatmates one. (Which I still have not found a copy of, damn it.)

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
AHAHAHAHAHA. Oh my god. That is beautiful. Never change, Japan. Never change.

It was all I could do not to mention this series during the one panel I attended at the Graven Images: Religion and Comics conference. All I could do.

Now I'm home and can actually look at this.

I.

...THAT ARE BIGGER THAN MINE.

[identity profile] fuchsoid.livejournal.com 2008-04-15 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Here I was, just about to sit down and do some proper work, and now I'll probably spend the rest of the morning scratching my head and muttering "Mexican???".

Actually it's pretty interesting to see Christian mythology used as just another source by writers looking for crackstory material.

Now back to the WTFing...

This is possibly the Best. Thing. Ever.

Must forward to all religious studies major friends.
