Crockpots & hair

Re: crockpots: [livejournal.com profile] yhlee and anyone else who has a slow cooker and not yet tried the slow cooker plastic liners: I've now tried one and it is muy excellente. You put it in your crock and fold it down over the pot as a whole, put your stuff in, pop the lid on and cook. After it's done and you eat, you empty it out, wait for it to cool, then lift out the dirty liner and toss it in the trash. You only have to clean the lid of the crockpot. Yay! Might get expensive if you cook several times a week - I think I paid $4-5 for the box of four liners, but as I hate hate hate washing the thing since it's so heavy, I find it well worth the expense. Especially as I use the slow cooker on the order of once a month. :D

And now for the hair! Since [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija is viciously off having a life or something and not sitting by her computer awaiting my email and giving me instant feedback on hair, I turn to the internet. I'm updating the hair for Rivas and Jordan in Project Blue Rose* so they will have hair with actual style and not my Generic Default Guy Hairstyles.

Why I'm doing it right now? Because at lunch today I was in line at Subway behind this Hispanic kid from the local high school who had Rivas' exact hair - lovely, thick, glossy, black, straight - and it was artfully cut into a style that I figured Jordan would drag Rivas off to a salon somewhere and make him get. Similar to his previous one-length bob (see icon), with slight layers at the end to make it move, and shorter lengths around the face, swept to one side.

Rivas now gets to grouse about his hair always being in his face.

I'm also working on a new 'do for Jordan, which will have life and movement and not be so damn hard to draw. (For a simple style like he had before, it was damn hard to do consistently.)

Rivas:

Actually, I utterly failed to capture the style in that version. I did it much better on the Post-It note that I scribbled the hair on right after lunch so I wouldn't forget:

Jordan:

The astute will notice I used the same body sketch for both of them. :D I was lazy and didn't want to draw a whole new body for Jordan, so I used Rivas'. I don't think Jordan is complaining.

Rivas hair: yes on the post-it style, not so much on the one you say isn't nailing it. The post-it style seems a bit longer and has flippy-up ends. Nice, definitely looks styled... and a little weird because I've had that haircut too. Also a little weird because Rivas didn't strike me as somebody who was willing to sit in a salon or get "styled" hair, but that's less relevant because A. not my character and B. I suspect Jordan can be very persuasive, and Rivas is presumably well aware by now that hair grows back.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Rivas doesn't care much, which is why he had the simple bob before.* It's entirely Jordan making him do stuff like that. XD

* Don't ask me why he had that instead of, say, a more regular boring male haircut. I suspect it might have something to do with longer hair when younger and not being entirely willing to give it up yet. XD

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And what's the point of not having regulation haircuts if you can't show off a non-regulation haircut, dammit?

[personal profile] seajules 2008-03-11 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
The post-it version imparts more movement, I think maybe it's the way the ends are flipping up a bit in the top layers, too. Also, I am good with any haircut that allows whisps of blond hair to frame Jordan's pretty eyes, yes.

There's a story behind that salon visit. A story involving the promise of sexual favors.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Quick sketches always have that sense of movement and life that attempting to reproduce them more formally usually totally lacks. XD

Presumably. XD

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, is that a plot bunny calling?

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
captain jack references: something i can truely get into.

i lieks jordan. jordan is also one of my favourite male names. ever. (I HAVE A CHARACTER NAMED JORDAN. but that one has better hair)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. :D I figure if I added Captain Jack as in Jack Daniels to the mix, that would win all the votes.

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2008-03-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
hrmm you're probably right.

you also forgot to mail out my copy I bought in September...

I don't really like the 'tufts' on Jordans hair (the bits in the back) but yep t'is good :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one of the ones I was thinking about. I also have a print, a Wolfwood, a Mystery Package, and about 3 other copies to mail out to various people. I was going to bring them all to work today but - aaggh! - forgot. I ahve now made myself a Google Calendar reminder that will pop up tonight and remind me to put them all by the door so they make it to work tomorrow. If they do that, they'll make it to the post office.

If you're done with men staring at goats, can I borrow it?

I was not much for Riva's hair in the first scans (it looks waaay too much like a woman's haircut over here), but the post-it not version was a must definite win. It's emotastic. XD

And Jordan's hair makes me squee "Hikaru no Go!" thanks to the two-toned nature of it. Does he dye it? I know in the first PBR it was two-toned, but I assumed it was because of the haircut--as his hair got longer, the sun bleached it, so the shorter hair in the back was the non-sun bleached, but the front was what happened when his hair grows out.

Also, Cloud is a whiny, emo bitch. That's why we love him.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It always figures that the quick sketch you jot down first captures the energy and motion, and the next pic killz it ded. I have to work at it a bit more to nail it. :)

I always figures Jordan dyed his hair. He thinks it makes him Special. XD I forgot the exact reason I started drawing it two-toned, other than it needed to be lighter than Rivas'.

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
heh--Riva's hair just needs to be more tousled and messy and that'll fix that right on up. Basically, just give him Mariah Carey's wind machine, and his hair will be golden. XD

And ahh, so it's hair dye. I guess Jordan started doing it in college and then just really, really liked it. Or for that "I'm undercover at a high school!" gig that got mentioned, and...he liked it. It gives him that "Hi, I'm jailbait!" aura. XD

As much as I love my long-haired guys, I keep thinking someone in this series ought to have something shorter and more angular, somehow.

Maybe another character needs to show up ... .

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Once I can convincingly draw shorter and more angular, you'll get characters with it. XD

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* If you ever need hair reference, I have a lot of Daniel Hennessey pics (and at differing angles to boot), and he's got that shorter, more angular hair style. >XD

Having spent a fair amount of time in Southern California, Jordan's hair - especially from the front - telegraphs "Nah, brah, I gotta wax my board before we hit the waves, dude."

And from the side - terrible emo band bassist, just add lip ring.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That kind of not-serious attitude actually fits my concept of him fairly well. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's totally appropriate! I am certain that Jordan... went undercover as a surfer once. Or pretended he was undercover while surfing.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And then he went undercover as a terrible emo band bassist!

Well, maybe not. But he might have claimed to want to do that when he was on the highschool case.

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds perfect to me!

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Once you get Rivas' hair down, rawr.

And thanks for the crockpot tip! It might be good to save for especially sticky situations, but I'm definitely picking some up.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the second slow-cooked meal I've made since I got them, but I'd filled the crockpot up before remembering I had them the first time. XD
