I haven't been posting [livejournal.com profile] yuletide recs partly because lots of them are going by on my f-list already, and partly because I feel it obligates me to say something more coherent than "Squee!" about them, but one that I really loved hasn't been mentioned by anyone on the f-list* and I know that a lot of you would love it.

The fandom is Neil Gaiman's American Gods, but you need no knowledge whatsoever of canon: this could be taken as-is and be a standalone tale.

"The Journey West" Listen, and I will tell you how Monkey comes to America.

* Or I missed it. Which is entirely possible.

Oooh.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't it! :D

[identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I loved that story. It's bookmarked to go on my recs post, which is almost coming to fruition now that I'm almost done reading through the fandoms I know. Almost, almost. Maybe tonight.

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Just perfect for American Gods, too. Thanks for passing it on!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
It needs lots more reccin'! XD

[identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
About half of the stories I bookmarked are not getting recced at all -- like I haven't seen the Artemis & Apollo one anywhere nor the fairy tale about the seventh son of the witch.

I just need to finish this one about Ares & Aphrodite, then read the Fray & Jem and the Hologram fics and then I can feel confident in writing up a rec post that samples far and wide!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the ones that hit me I've seen recced once or twice. Except for the Okami story, but I think that requires at least a passing familiarity with the game to really get the most out of it.

Although, come to think of it, the long xxxHolic story I really liked, I haven't seen it coming through, just the shorter ones.

[identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
The Okami story looked interesting when I started reading it but several paragraphs in, I felt like I was missing stuff so I moved on. I do think it works best if you know the canon but this is fanfic so I can't expect anything more.

(That icon will never fail to hypnotize me.)

Yeah - like the game, it marries traditional Japanese stories with this new setting, but there's so many little things that only make sense in the context of the game, like Amaterasu falling asleep any time the focus is off her for a short time (if you stop moving Amaterasu, she yawns, curls up, and falls asleep), or the imps with painted masks over their faces, and the ways the characters speak.

(I've received tons of comments on this icon. XD)

I've been delicious'ing things and saving them up for a post. Perhaps I will do one tonight.

But yeah, isn't that great?

[identity profile] cynthia1960.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, thank you! This was a good one.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going alphabetically by fandom and I've been doing pretty much nothing but reading fic for two days. And...I've gotten as far as F. F! Fairy Tales (trad)! I figure I may get to Neil Gaiman sometime around Valentine's day...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I spent a huge chunk of Christmas Day in Fairy Tales (trad). XD

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I keep switching it up with other fandoms every four stories or so because I'm going to burn out like I did with Diana Wynne Jones - The Chronicles of Chrestomanci.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta say, I'll be quite happy not to read another Twelve Dancing Princesses or swan-wing brother story for a long, long time.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
A side effect of the short list of people without stories being up for so long. There's also an incredible number of stories about knitting in the Pushing Daisies section.

I've been alternating between rec posts and fandoms in those posts, and I still have about fifty bookmarked that looked interesting enough to try when my fanfic reading brain comes back, and I know there are more fandoms out there that I should browse through . . .

Man, this is a *lot* of stories.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how I'd even have gotten as far as I have if it hadn't been for sick days...I'm ready to take a break from the fic and go back to work tomorrow.

I saw "and never without sacrifice" recced somewhere randomly in the Yuletide comm, I think.

Ironically, I just read two separate--[livejournal.com profile] magicnoire and [livejournal.com profile] kate_nepveu--recs of this fic. And it's been added to my to-rec list, too. I've yet to read American Gods, but the fic is gorgeous.

Yeah, but I only put up my recs list prompted by this post. =>

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
There have been 3 or 4 recs on my f-list since I posted this. :)

[identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm probably not paying as much attention to the recs being posted at the Yuletide comm as I should, just because the same stories keep getting recced over and over. Not that I don't agree with some of their choices but more variety would be nice.

[identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, definitely agreeing with that.

I'm surprised at how ignorant I am of a lot of these fandoms, so I haven't read a lot yet (also, despite the fact that I am off from work, real life keeps intruding ... ).

I've been trying to get through the ones I know on my own, so I haven't been paying a lot of attention to other people's recs yet ... I had added the yuletide comm to my watch list, and now I wish I hadn't, because it's been hot and cold running recs for two days, mostly for fandoms I don't know, and it's drowning the rest of my flisters' entries. Maybe I'll take it off for a while ... .

I don't normally read the main Yuletide comm--too much spam for my already-long flist--but I browsed over once and skimmed the first page.
