More linkblogging!

From a post to the very low-traffic [livejournal.com profile] yokaimonsters, an LJ comm about traditional Japanese monsters. These two links are the 2007 Kawasaki Halloween parade. There's lots of nifty costumes in them, but the best part is about halfway down the second page, where you get a bunch of costumers dressed as traditional Japanese monsters: oni, tengu, kappa, etc.

I think my favorite is the picture, near the end, with a tengu (crow demon), a rokurokubi (woman with extendable neck), and a child nopperabou (faceless person).

Have you seen the film The Great Yokai War? It features a lot of these monsters as characters, including the rokurokubi.

You'd like it. It's live action, with a kappa and a variety of other yokai helping a little boy become the kirin rider to fight a sharp-dressed villain and a beautiful yokai played by the schoolgirl murderer in Kill Bill.

It's now on my Netflix queue. :D

Amazing costumes, and so many of them clearly took a huge amount of effort. The faceless child was easily the most frightening thing though. Urrgh.

That nopperabou pings my horror of no-faced things something fierce, particularly because the child managed to face straight towards the camera for both shots--the lack of eyes doesn't matter, because she can find you perfectly well without them. Augh!

Ooh! Those are some EXCELLENT costumes! Very scary!

Cool!!!!!!!!!!

TOTALLY COOL - some people have a lot of time, I guess, to come up with such cool costumes

Whoa! That is very cool!

Thanks for sharing that. That was really cool to see and I enjoyed the costumes (some of them managed to be sexy and scary at the same time--always a plus with me ;-). Unfortunately, all I could hear in my head while I looked at the photos was "Hey Pumpkin Head" from the Cowboy Bebop movie.

(C'mon, you knew that was coming.)
