Your WTF?! moment from Top Chef

Judge, to contestant: "So, Casey, since you're from Texas I guess you're familiar with elk?"

OH YES, THE GREAT TEXAS ELK. I CAN'T WALK AROUND OUTSIDE WITHOUT TRIPPING OVER AN ELK. WHEN I THINK OF TEXAS GAME MEATS, I THINK OF ELK.

WTF?! HAhahahaa XD
I mean, whut?!
Is that like saying, "Well, Tammy. You're Canadian so I guess you're familiar with Caribou?" BECAUSE WE EAT IT HERE ALL THE TIME!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
No - the elk's range is in the Rocky Mountains and parts north. :D

[identity profile] flemmings.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
No! No! You've forgotten those great thundering herds of elk that would cover ten square miles of the vast Texan plains befre the white man came.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
How could I forget the giant Texas elk, beloved of cave paintings, myth, and legend!

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
HAAH! That's what I thought but then I was like, "Now Tammy, you're not entirely familiar with that part of the States. Maybe they have... special elk there. That like open plains. OR maybe they farm them?"

XD

[identity profile] errantimpulses.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Whaaaat? There's kangaroos there, too, I hear.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
And three-toed sloths!

[identity profile] flamika.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
....there are elk in Texas?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY MY POINT

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
It may not be very 'Texas', but to be fair, she did also say that her family hunted elk and that she was very familiar with the meat.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it doesn't excuse Colicchio's inane statement, since there are no elk in Texas. :)

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Aw c'mon! You're telling me that you've never engaged in any completely erroneous assumptions about New York City? ;-)

I like how Casey's family apparently has some connection to every kind of food and cooking, ever.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
...

I have to think to know what an elk looks like.

I'm sure they thrive near deserts...

[identity profile] dragovianknight.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Elk?

[identity profile] tygerr.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
DOGS! DOGS IN ELK!! :-D

(Well, *someone* had to say it!)

[identity profile] derjmeister.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Was that more or less WTF to you than Colicchio's wondering why Hung did not showcase his Vietnamese heritage in this EC? I'm inclined to say less because I don't think there are elk in Vietnam, either. And I realize that Texas is a country, but it's closer to a country where there are elk.

(GO DALE GO)

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Psh, on our drive down to A-kon, we practically have to wade through elk on our way in.

...OH WAIT DUR THAT'S RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC!

fyi, judge, those are armadillo on the road... To my knowledge, they're not a Texas delicacy either.

[identity profile] inkblot14.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait...you mean...

you mean you didn't...

you didn't Google this first!?

Mind you, what I'd really like are some Texas Long-Elk. With horns that go straight out sideways.

[identity profile] heyoka.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Which someone would promptly shoot in order to take the head as a coat rack for their roadhouse (or roadhouse-themed restaurant, soon to have franchises across the state).

[identity profile] mundeemo.livejournal.com 2007-09-27 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I have eaten elk fried steak at a big game restaurant but that was five years ago. WTF Casey, I had respect for you now it's Dale all the way.

Hahahahahaha.

I presented a friend from Texas with a cookbook titled Elegant Elk, Delicious Deer. He liked it....
