And what's in your bag?

[livejournal.com profile] jonquil posted about a time capsule from 1957 that included the contents of a woman's purse from that era, and asked what unusual or interesting things were in your bag. I started listing the contents, but it got a bit long, so I'm moving it over here, and asking *you* the same question.

The bag in question is basically a small messenger bag with FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST emblazoned on it. I got it before I watched the anime, actually: I liked the shape and size of the bag, and it was the least objectionable logo at the time. If I'm feeling like a giant dork when I go into places, I turn it around so the logo is facing me. :)

Contents:

-- A veritable pharmacy of non-daily meds, including Relpax, Advil, Lactaid, and Imodium (because when you need it, you need it now).

-- A box that separates out your pills by day, which I used to take my daily meds to A-Kon and haven't removed from my bag yet.

-- Currently, my passport, which I picked up from mom in anticipation of the Japan trip.

-- Two DVDs with Hogfather and various Time Teams burned on them (I have no idea why they're in there).

-- Two 1 gig flash drives, both of which I got free (one with a stupendous rebate deal, one for answering a survey on digital collections). ETA: Forgot to add they both have copies of all my art pieces for A-Kon. :) I need to burn them to disk so I can clean them off my hard drive, which is starting to wheeze under the weight of all my data.

-- The world's largest collection of irrelevant receipts.

-- Two outdated shopping lists.

-- Lottery tickets from Christmas I haven't redeemed yet, which may be out of date.

-- Five pens, one of which is normal and four of which are funky neon ink from a wedding, where they were supplied for us to write stuff on cards to tie to a tree. I will never ever use them, but they will languish in my bag until one of them explodes all over the irrelevant receipts and I kick myself for not taking them out and throwing them away.

-- A used book by Gervase Phinn I gave my mom for Christmas and stole back this weekend to read myself.

-- My iPod.

-- My phone.

-- An Office Depot membership card that goes on my keychain, but which broke. I was very strident at the clerk at Staples the other day when I went in and he tried to sell me on their free membership, because I have had it up to HERE with membership card, because I have way too many.

-- A receipt from my oil change, on which I scribbled the titles and authors of two books that were discussed on the radio on the way to Houston, since my phone wasn't able to reach Livejournal. (LJ is a great reminder list, as long as I can access the bloody thing.)

Hmmm, what's in my bag:

Well, my purse itself is interesting in that it's a travel purse. I used it while traveling and liked it so much that I use it regularly. My wallet is actually a separate travel wallet which can be used on its own.

-Bottle of prescription medication

-Prescription bottle with label peeled off filled with Advil

-Ballpoint pens and a couple of pencils

-Kleenex pack

-Several receipts

-Sunglasses

-Cell phone (when out of the house)

-Old shopping lists

I used to carry my pen drive, but not currently. When I wear makeup, I carry my lipstick.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I have a wallet that can be used as a separate purse, but not at the moment, because I haven't found one that I like in a while.

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
-Eyeglasses and case
-Sunglasses not in case cuz they're cheap
-Eyeglasses cleaning kit
-Wallet/Pouch with cards, lip balm, work keys, assorted bits of money, receipts
-Often I have a small notebook and pen
-Often I have a collapsible umbrella
-House keys
-Sometimes I have a book/ipod/hand held video game system but that's only if I anticipate waiting for more than half an hour for something or riding the bus

My bag/purse/wallet/pouch is cleaned out regularly and I often swap bags several times a week. (Like today. Where I forgot to put my wallet in. So no passport today!)

If I carry my backpack there will also usually be beef jerky, a water bottle, a sweater, a sun hat, forgotten notebooks, vitamins, some small survival gear items (just in case I get sucked into another dimension... you cannot be too careful), and a small toiletries kit.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If I have my backpack, it's usually because I have lots of books or art supplies or I'm taking my camera somewhere.

[identity profile] rilina.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
- wallet
- keys (house, car)
- small umbrella
- zip case with lip balm, bandaids, small mirror, hair elastic, ibuprofen, kleenex, hand sanitizer
- cell phone
- receipts that somehow didn't get tucked into my wallet
- work time card, keycard, badge; student id; library card
- sunglasses and case
- ipod + earbuds case
- variety of pens
- (when i remember) a small notebook

I swap between three bags regularly, depending on where I'm going. It gets confusing.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
My bag is really too big and inappropriate for things like trips to the theatre, but if I swapped things out I'd lose things or forget to bring them. XD

[identity profile] wyrdness.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a purse/ handbag/ whatever anyone wants to call it, so instead I choose to view the contents of my backpack, which pretty much does the same job for me. :)

- Various scribbled notes to myself that I forgot about!
- A pair of disposable wooden chopsticks (which I also forgot were in there)
- Umbrella
- Box with a laboradite necklace on a silver chain which I use for rp costume and forgot to take out.
- Character sheet for the above rp game.
- 2 different coloured hair scrunchies.
- "Buy 12 meals get one free!" stamp collection thingy from a yummy chinese food place.

I'm surprised that's all it had in it to be honest. Usually it also contains my pencil case, A4 paper, A4 notepad, at least one book I'm in the middle of reading and my wallet.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow...I have a heck of a lot more in there than I thought. No wonder it's so heavy.

  • A bottle of generic 'Tension Headache' pills

  • Netflix envelope containing Kyo Kara Maoh disc 2

  • Mobile phone in ugly leather case

  • Lined 'blank book' filled with random notes to myself and half-written fanfic

  • Checkbook

  • Wallet

  • Ridiculous quantities of random receipts ( these are not going back in to the purse)

  • Undeposited paycheck (oops!)

  • A small collection of business cards for places I need/want to remember

  • CVS prescription information sheets for the last two things I got refilled

  • A good half dozen or so printouts of typed in-progress fic with additional material scribbled at the bottom

  • Changepurse holding 2 1-GB microSD cards and a 1-MB MP3 player

  • About a half dozen notes to myself on small pieces of paper from my desk at work

  • A leather folder holding my driver's license, car registration and AAA card

  • An empty prescription bottle that usually holds my lunchtime dose of domperidone

  • 1 nailpolish remover pad

  • 2 different 'hands free' headsets for my phone

  • Asthma 'rescue' inhaler

  • 2 barettes and about a half dozen hairties

  • 2 pens and a pencil

  • The keys to my parent's house

  • 2 AAA batteries (for the MP3 player)

  • A tube of chapstick

  • About quarter package of Halls throat drops

  • A plastic coin holder half-full of laundry quarters

  • 1 blister pack of midol

  • An epipen

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Err...that's a 1-GB MP3 player. Duh.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! They would have to be very short songs indeed for a 1-MB MP3 player. XD

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Stupid not-editable comments...

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, I have two bags. A laptop bag which I got free at a fancy conference and a lunch sack type insulated bag by California Innovations.

Lessee, laptop bag:
Laptop
Lovely notebook full of lists/reminders/etc, it's blue and lavender and I got it from SF
mechanical pencil
Shojo Beat Manga Academy
Dr. Ten Passage From Servant Boy, vol 1 (man am I ever glad no one has x-ray eyes)
Loveless vol 7
Sakura Pigma Micron, size 1
A sample of Villainess Crushed
3 lidocaine patches

In my lunchbag (this has a much handier and less likely to get crushed/smashed top compartment):
Cell phone and charger
checkbook
ipod and charger
allergy meds--benadryl and inhaler
A fountain pen
A bottle of TAL nine muses
A bottle of BPAL Sin
An imp of Dragon's Milk
and a bowl and a spoon

I used to carry oodles of other meds, but I found it easier just to buy extra and stash them in various desk drawers against times of need.

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Doh! Yes, I also carry a wallet in my back pocket but I am blue collar like that--that's generally full of receipts and annoying cards for 'sales' programs.

My laptop bag recently got dumped out, too, and usually also contains: hairties, quarters, epi-pen, random more books, packs of snacks, and more pens.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to carry a wallet in my back pocket, a habit which stopped after the clothing manufacturers stopped making jeans that both fit me and contained back pockets large enough to put wallets in without them falling out. That started by bag-carrying phase.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I tend to need my meds when I'm out and about, rather than safely ensconced at a desk. I'd love not to rattle when I walked.

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, fortunately I usually know in advance that I'm gonna need the meds. The only ones I need on the fly are the allergy ones, inhaler and epi, and they don't rattle. Yay! Though if someone's never seen one before, the epi-pen can be a little scary.

I really ought to get a padded laptop bag or get more organized like the person below....

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)

because pictures are the ultimate in fun!

- a multitude of notebooks, depending on where i'm going. the sketchbook is hard to carry aroun, the leaf one is newly ripped apart and started anew and the moleskin is 3/4ths of the way done. (but i feel done with it, so it's a *just in case* notebook)

- whatever book i happen to be reading at the moment

- my nintendo ds lite with pokemon pearl or trioncube inside

- my sidekick III (i can't leave home without aim/the internet/full keyboard/text messaging/email/etc. i really really can't. bonus points for paris hilton-esque trendiness)with home fashioned cell phone charms: a death note cross necklace and a kid robot zipper pull!

- two lipbalms (one medicated & one handcrafted i picked up at the local comic shop and art botique - YES THEY ARE IN THE SAME STORE!!!)

- face powder (if i remember, so i don't grease up everything)

- vitmin e oil (this is occasional, it's for my earlobes. sometimes i gotta lube 'em up to stick in a new pair of plugs - i have 1/2 inch earholes!- or if they're sore or i'm working on going larger. it's a divine moment when you can take the time out to massage your earholes, weird but true.)

- rose water (becuase if i'm walking somewhere, it's usually a long walk and i like to be refreshed/not smell. sometimes i swap this for spanish violet perfume, if i have it in a spray bottle)

- ipod/giant headphones (again, depending on where i'm going)

- an assortment of microns and pilot g-2 07's. in various colours. (i like my black microns in 005 - again for writing, you'd think i was an artist with all my absurd writing supplies)

- my keys, which is a giant blue tinkerbell key, some janglies that fell off an old purse, a pippi longstockings doll and some cute yellow bear. (i like designer toys, i won't lie)

- a hair band.

my purse is acient. as i've had it since i was ike 16 (7 years now). i've had it fixed up becuase the strap has fallen off. my friend reminded me i owned this and i was like MAH GOTTA USE IT. other bags of choice are an animu tinkerbell neon raver messenger bag or even just a plain old tan dickies one.

GAHAG I HOPE THAT WAS FUN

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
also not to mention walet. wtf. that thing is massive.

at the local comic shop and art botique - YES THEY ARE IN THE SAME STORE!!!

*envies*

If I am ever anywhere near that area of Florida, I am so going there.

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
heck yeah. it's like 20-30 minutes straight one road drive from my apartment. sometimes i convince my mom to drag me over there. or my friends. because it's a lot of fun to go with people. they had a munny gallery a few months back, it was so rad ;_;

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Pokemon pearl? How far along are you? (I'm just after the 7th gym in Diamond.)

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)

i actually just passed the 6th gym. which means i have to update my card. hahah.

Cool. The last time I tried to make a card it crashed.

Also I think it is funny there is so much stuff crammed in my purse I don't have room for a book so the bookmark is a little silly.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Eep. And I also forgot my D&D dice. (They fell out of the bag and I had to pick them all up.)

I usually just read books before I hand them over as gifts. :D That way I don't have to steal them back!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I did that with the other books I gave her. I didn't have time to read this one. XD

[identity profile] mothoc.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I carry one of two bags. In my backpack is (off the top of my head:

- another set of earbuds
- checkbook
- misc. pens and pencils

- laptop and power supply
- a Popular Science magazine
- misc. connective wires for the laptop to other devices
- business cards (mine and others)

- chapstick

[identity profile] herchuckness.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't carry a bag much anymore, now that I ride everywhere I can. The most interesting things in my pockets:

- key on a length of chainmail (house-sitting for SCA enthusiasts)

- ATM receipt from the Citibank in Shibuya (bank balances seem so much more friendly in yen)

- fortune cookie fortune reading "He who throws mud loses ground" (...in bed)

- a purple Sanzo keychain strap thingy (which coincidentally matches the little purple pen on a chain I got free at last year's Yaoi-con)

- a scribbly little Sanzo drawing on a folded-up post-it note (because there is no such thing as too much Sanzo)

Hmmm ... >rootling in black nylon "Healthy Back" bag ....<

- fat battered wallet with coin purse built in

- sunglasses (prescription lenses) in case

- checkbook

- small bottle of ibuprofen

- battered-up Kleenexes

- new pocket pack of Kleenex

- change that escaped from wallet's coin purse

- key ring with electronic security token as a fob (and far too many anonymous keys)

- a tin of Badger Balm

- a compact-style purse mirror, broken at the hinge into 2 separate mirrors

- Burt's Bees Lemon-Lime lip gloss, which I use as lip balm

- a little flashlight

- a teeny, boring cellphone (no camera or nothin')

- Crizal eyeglass wipe, in plastic sleeve

- leftover ticket pick-up info for a performance of "Twelve Angry Men" at the Kennedy Center

- a receipt from my doctor that I should have turned in long ago (uh-oh)

- 4 ballpoints, a mechanical pencil, and a lime-green highlighter

- an ancient raffle ticket from the local Boy Scouts

- a business card from a calligrapher who does Judiaica (ketubot & such)

Not as bad as I had feared ...

[identity profile] awamiba.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I normally carry my backpack/diaper bag everywhere with my purse stuffed into it.

Inside my purse:
bottle of ibuprofen

random reciepts

Inside the backpack:

cable to connect speakers to stereo
2 CDs-- Indigo Girls "Come On Now Social" and Bif Naked "I Bificus"
zoo receipt
teething chain
permanent marker
sunglasses
baby tylenol
mylicon drops
1 blue flashing pen labeled "This pen was stolen from Kori and Frank's wedding"
1 green flashing pen
2 empty plastic grocery sacks

bottle of water
small purple vibrating alien
keys to house, car, everything

Normally I don't carry all the stereo related things--I've just gotten back from visiting my mother, who claimed that none of these things existed. :) Everything else is pretty normal except that I usually have spare bits of beading and pliers in there as well.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely forgot about the small thing of sunscreen in my bag. XD Which isn't remarkable, considering I tend to forget about it when I need it, too.

[identity profile] awamiba.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
...and as soon as it posted, I realized I missed a pocket, so add these to the list:

camera
ear buds for mp3s
ear bud for phone
2 legos
$0.33

[identity profile] affreca.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I only carry a purse about half of the time, when I'm in tighter pants, skirts or expect to be out of the house long enough to need a book. I prefer my wallet to be on me, if possible. I also switch out bags depending on what I expect to need (just shopping is purse, or one of two craft purses with beading/spinning/whatever current project). Main purse currently contains:

1 V5 pilot pen (black)
1 button (Sorry. My cat wouldn't approve)
1 silver bracelet
4 rings
2 earrings
1 necklace (matches earrings. Left over from wedding two weeks ago)
1 sunscreen towellette
1 small bottle of dramamine
1 packet of cold relief (my old work had a drug box, I raided it)
1 packet of triple antibiotic ointment
1 packet of hydrocortisone (and I need to get more ibuprofen in there)
1 paperclip
3 crayons (blue, yellow and red)
1 dime (it's USAian.. I thought it was Canadian until I just looked)
1 Canadian nickel
6 Canadian pennies
1 note with padlock combo (I wonder where the lock is)
1 empty paper bag
another necklace
1 bellybutton stud (I haven't had a stud in that hole for 8 months)
another dime
3 pennies
1 safety pin
1 keychain with Meryl from Trigun
1 wedding invitation
1 small drawer pull, with screws
3 more dimes
another penny
1 nickel
1 D8
1 keychain with a bigbreasted, one legged mouse I found on the road

And I found a hole in the purse. I might have to switch permanently to black purse (which is big enough to hold a hardcover)

[identity profile] arinye.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My bag:
A black, 'construction-worker-style' lunchbox with many dents and scrapes and a screw missing on one of its hinges.

I'm not even going to try and open the thing. I think it's developing internal organs. It slouches down and sighs when I leave it sitting too long.

I went into the courthouse yesterday to renew my driver's license, and had to run the bag through the metal detector. The guy peered very hard at the screen for a long time and then asked worriedly, "What have you got in there?"

I did not know the answer to this question. I came up the following list of things that might have looked suspicious on the scanner:

- nail clippers and file
- scissors
- maybe a screwdriver? ("But I thought I'd left the screwdriver at home...")
- pen drive ("'Penguin?'" "Pen drive." "Pen drive...")
- an iPod

To the iPod he said, "Oh, okay. Go on through."

What did he think the iPod was? I guess they may not see many of them at this particular courthouse, but I don't think they see many nicely rectangular, tightly-packed little bombs there, either.

Addendum: One Tide spot remover pen. Because there's both a Sonny Bryan's and a Chinese restaurant in the basement of my office building, and neither looks good on a white shirt.

My bag is a not so little messenger bag. :/ It features Jin from Samurai Champloo, even though I'm not terribly fond of Jin or Champloo. It contains always:
-3 decks of playing cards (tsubasa, ffxii, wolf's rain)
-Sketchbook
-Nintendo DS + 7 games (Chocobo Tails, a 2gb drive cart, FF3, pokemon diamond, and three others that escape my mind at the moment)
-extra boxers. you never know.
-tissues
-a plastic suction cup dart gun w/ 3 darts for said
-pocket sketchbook
-art kit (blue pencil, pencil, smudgepaperrollthingie, basic colors of colored pencils, white china marker, .5mm inking pen, retractable eraser)
-my ipod (30gb video)
-Pencil sharpener
-extra eraser

Alternating contents:
It contains one of the two of these at a time (due to size reasons)
-Pokemon guide (or whatever DS game I'm playing at the time)
-Character Sheets/rules for the game I GM on monday nights.

My bag screams art dweeb. :/

I dislike carrying a big bag, so I have a small purse made of black and brown leather with my initial on it. During the school year, my wallet, keys, and cell phone bounce between my purse and backpack, because I don't like to have to carry both. So when I'm going to class, I just stuff what I need in my backpack and take that.

Currently inside my purse is...

-three tampons
-three pens
-one mint (the kind you get in bowls in a restaurant)
-two empty mint wrappers
-a scrunchie
-my wallet
-my checkbook
-my cellphone
-two receipts
-this lipgloss (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P127110&categoryId=B70")
-a small lip brush
-a tiny tube of steroid cream for allergic reactions, given to me months ago by my allergist
-my keys

Also, I sometimes carry a small pink-and-white striped plastic case containing first-aid kit stuff. Sometimes I leave it at home, but I like to have it with me. Inside that are...

-one pad
-two tampons
-a small bottle of hand lotion
-some antibiotic cleansing wipes
-a tiny packet of first aid cream
-bandaids
-a tiny sewing kit

Usually there's Benadryl and Advil in there too, but I see I used it all up and need to replace it. And that's my stuff!

I can never keep pills in my possession. I use them all.

Ad Age did this hysterical survey of what was in people's purses. My favorite was the woman with the prostitution summons who tried to pass it off as a parking ticket.

I haven't carried a purse in years. I do have a knitting bag which nowadays I pretty much carry everywhere. It has:

-- my wallet

-- current knitting project

-- backup knitting project, usually 100% cotton yarn with size 8 needles for a quick dishcloth

-- a pen when I'm lucky

-- mail

-- extra yarn

-- tape measure

-- daughter's hair clippys

-- $2 floating free of the wallet

-- the cozy I knit for my DS (the DS is out and about)

-- spool of wire, also crafty

-- deck of Go Fish cards

-- Gorillaz CD

-- two large knitted potholders I meant to felt at my parents' house and then realized I had nothing heavy to try to felt with (my frontload washer is not TOUGH ENOUGH to felt)

-- pillowcase, same reason

-- My Little Pony sticker from bank

-- two fake gold earrings

-- large flower button

...I wasn't this crafty before. I think.

On top of the general phone, iPod, pens, make-up and purse etc., probably the most unusual things I carry are an electronic dictionary, my passport, two paper forms of identification permitting me to exist on Japanese soil and one card identification for the same. Not that I'm terrified of being accidentally deported or anything (and unable to understand Japanese policeman-speak in the process!*).

Also possibly unusual are the volume of manga and some kind of kanji workbook I carry at all times, along with writing paper since I started taking presentation and report-writing classes every week on top of regular Japanese. I am regularly grateful to the kareshi for finding me a handbag that can hold several hefty A4-sized textbooks with room and weight to spare for a hairdryer, straightening irons and a change of clothes if need be.

*Although it should be noted that phones here often come with smaller electronic dictionaries in them, so the insistence on carrying an electronic dictionary is just testament to my lack of shame in looking up strange kanji in the middle of busy supermarkets.
