Once upon a time, there was a new Facilities Manager at SUNY Stony Brook who decided to save money by shutting off heat to the buildings he controlled over the winter intercession. Boy was he surprised when they turned on the heat for the coming semester and found that a pipe in the Fine Arts Center had burst and frozen over, only melting once the heat came on. The resulting torrent of water gutted the theatre and music programs including the destruction of 3 or so concert grand pianos which were splintered as they floated through a metal doorframe and the damage to the handmade Bavarian organ.
Several jobs ago I can remember someone having to explain to our building manager (we were a small company renting space in a random office building in Boston) that, yes, we really did need to be able to run the air-conditioning in the server room all winter.
Y'know, I don't consider myself all that tech-savvy (at least, not on the hardware side of things) but still... ARGH. $luser, you not only fail at life, you make all the rest of us who consider the environment look bad.
I'm not that tech-savvy either, but I took a considerable time getting my jaw back up off the floor when I read this. Is ther any provision for sterilising people like this when they get fired? Just to keep them out of the gene pool.
I really, really hope that idiot is getting sued for damages. If someone pulled that kind of stunt and fucked up tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment in my business, I drag their ass to court so fast it would make their head spin. Jesus.
Uhh... do they just not mention that large computers = cooled room any more? Is it considered too self-evident, like how to breathe? I am no tech-head, but I'm sure I knew that by the age of, say, twelve.
Well, OK, both my parents worked with research mainframes... but still. :P

That's so... so... I am at a loss for words!
If there was a techy dumbass award I'd feel the need to award it to that person.

Ow, ow, ow!!!
I am so glad that the idiot was terminated ... and I'm wondering how s/he was able to get that keycard so easily ... .

Because, of course, we use 3-4 large units to cool this building simply for our temperature pleasure. [/sarcasm]
Oh, the pain...
