Spindrift preview and tutorial!

While inking a page earlier today, I took pictures of the process and during my off time at the ref desk tonight wrote up a tutorial following the process I've been using while inking Spindrift. It's posted over on the PandaBuddha Manga page, and you can get a preview of a page you haven't seen yet, plus ogle the MOSTLY-NAKED MAN in the tutorial.

I wonder how many people clicked the MOSTLY-NAKED MAN link without actually reading the rest of the paragraph?

At least one person ^^;;;;;;;

XD I figured that those who weren't interested in the tutorial would probably be interested in the subject.

I still haven't clicked the MOSTLY-NAKED MAN. Perhaps I will not.

He's still several clicks away from that click. :D You have to go to the tutorial from the main page, then he doesn't show up until the second page. XD You can ogle my entirely naked pens on the first page, though.

Oh, well PENS! That's different. ::clicks::

Naturally, I misread 'pens'.

And got REALLY confused for a second.

Muahahahahahaaaaa!!

What a relief that wasn't just me.

I read the whole paragraph, and then clicked the mostly-naked man link. Does that count?   :-)

The tutorial was interesting, the artwork was ... very tasty! But the pen-porn temptation in the comments (just above) was what made me laugh out loud.

:D Something for everyone!

Interesting, I love your tutorials. Did you ever do one for that Princess Tutu doujin?

And sorry if you've covered this before, but can I ask why you pencil digitally and ink traditionally?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, haven't done one for it yet. :)

I'm currently pencilling digitally because I am ... well, my art teacher put it "You are not afraid of lines." XD What he meant was: I scribble like mad everywhere. If I pencil on paper, I scribble until I can't actually see much of the scene I'm trying to draw, then I draw the big lines in really dark and heavy, scan it, change it to blue, print it out, and attempt to refine form there. And it takes several iterations of that until I find something that works out of the mess, and then I have to fix it in Photoshop anyway, because inevitably something will be out of proportion. If I do it digitally, I can just erase away and resize at will. Much quicker and less frustrating all around.

I prefer my traditional inks at the moment - they feel warmer to me somehow, and they're faster and easier. My digital inks are ... ok, but not great. As I said in the tutorial intro, I inked Project Blue Rose digitally because my scanner sucked, so it was less work, but now that I have a spiffalicious scanner, it's not a problem.

Awesome. Thank you very much. I know a few months ago I read about inking over the blue, but I have been scanning the page in full color and then trying to tweak out the blue in photoshop. This sounds much easier! I can't wait for you to finish so I can order a copy.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I was scanning in color and adjusting in Photoshop with my previous scanner, because it just wasn't good enough to really scan well in B&W. I think. I can't remember the exact reason I didn't. XD

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Drat. I haven't looked at my scanner, but I may not be able to do it that way. It is just a cheap printer/scanner combo from Kmart.

Oh, this is awesome. I love reading your tutorials and learning more about the whole pencilling-inking-toning process, along with paneling too. Trying to keep stuff in mind so I don't drive [livejournal.com profile] vom_marlowe insane with Sekrit Project.
