Webhosting...

Just a reminder to those of you out there who either don't know or don't remember or don't care, but I have an approximate metric fuckton of webspace and can host domains and subdomains. So if you want a webpage, to post art or fic, or to noodle about with, or run an RPG, or whatever, and you want it FREEEEEEE, then let me know. :)



WHAT YOU GET:

1. 1 gig disk space. Possibly more if you can convince me you need it. :)
2. Dreamhost has given me about 2.5 terabytes bandwidth, so unless you start streaming porn, you won't run out of it. If you start streaming porn, your account is no longer free. :D
3. Access to the DH panel, which allows you to manage your site.
4. FTP access, either via WebFTP or your own FTP program
5. Shell access, if you want it.
6. A MySQL database.
7. PHP 5
8. Access to DH's One-Click Installs, which include forum software, shopping cart (no credit cards unless you're willing to either run it through Paypal or pay for the security certificate), a WordPress blog, and several other things.
9. Your own subdomain, at [your subdomain name].magatsu.net. If you want your own domain name, I can host those, too, but you'll have to buy the domain name yourself (cheapest option) or give me $10 to register it for you.


WHAT YOU DO:

1. Do not install a BitTorrent tracker - DH doesn't allow them.
2. Do not distribute TV episodes, anime, movies, mp3s, etc. Dreamhost deletes them when they're detected, and may take down my account, which means you've just nuked the websites of several other people as well. If that happens, I'm deleting your account.
3. Take security seriously. This means that if you install anything on the webspace, you are responsible for keeping it up-to-date with upgrades and security patches. If I log into the panel and see that you haven't attended to any One-Click Installs with upgrades available in a few days, then I'll click the button and upgrade them myself. Which means that if something goes wrong with the upgrade, you don't have a backup. Best to do it yourself first.
4. Be responsible for your own backups. DreamHost doesn't back your files up, and neither do I. If your site gets hosed and you don't have a backup, even if I caused it, I'll give you sympathy but not much else. :) You're getting exactly what you pay for.

Wow, we've come a long way since the days of 50MB on Geocities Plus...

I would totally take you up on this for pimping-greed's sake (how does Dreamhost feel about ZIPs/CBRs, but I already have a shared site with zebeckras at snarkykitty.com that I don't use anyway, and they let me upload all the MP3s I want. ;P I know someday I want a personal/professional/portal site, but A)I'd have to put something on it & B)I'll never think of a URL (my real name is already taken by evil porn pirates)...

DH doesn't seem to be doing anything about zips/cbrs. Leastways, *my* zips seem to still be up there. :) I think they're more worried about things that companies are actively sending out cease-and-desist letters for at the moment. :)

They increase your disk space and bandwidth every week, plus when I first got the plan it had 20 gigs of space, and one day I turned around and had 200. O.o I'm mostly doling it out in smaller quantities to discourage media-sharing and just in case I want to use the space for large-sale backups of my art and text files. :)

Back in my day, Geocities gave you *5* MB of storage, and that was *huge*! You'd never need more than that for your personal site!

What about totally legal MP3s of your own stuff (not that I have any, I'm just wondering if they're all "O noes MP3 bad!" or if they actually care about the content of said MP3s)?

Totally legal MP3s of your own stuff would be A-OK. :) I think they mostly look for it by volume - I've distributed a couple via here and had no problems. XD (hey, it's my site and I take responsibility if I hose it for everyone. XD)

I do know that Doctor Who episodes hosted on DH get deleted with regularity, as a certain download discussion community has found out.

I think the area of vids would be grey, but with YouTube and other video-sharing services available, there's not really that much call for private servers anymore, I think.

I'm not quite ready yet, but sometime in the near future I will be needing space to put a page about my sewing business. I haven't decided if I want to deal with online ordering and such, or if I just want to have an online portfolio. Do you have any suggestions?

Hmmm. Well, you can always start with an online portfolio and add ordering ability later. :) You'll probably end up with a sort of hybrid between the two anyway, because you'll probably want contact info up so that anyone who comes across it can get in touch with you if they want to commission you or buy something you've done.

I've been posting my drafts and working versions to flickr, because it's easy and free but...the next bit of art I have coming up is tentacle porn yaoi and I'd be surprised if they didn't yank it. Would you be willing to host something like that?

I had a website eons ago that I did with Mozilla's WYSIWYG application (N something?, I forget the name), so I'm pretty much a web-programming idiot, but I follow directions well.

Simple HTML is pretty easy, and if you don't want to mess about with learning it, I can show you how to beat WordPress into a content management system, like I did with the http://www.projectbluerose.com site.

I honestly don't have the time to devote to it. My scriptwriters don't seem to have much, either. :) I'm not opposed to putting a mirror of the old site up for archival purposes, but it probably won't have anything new added unless a miracle happens.

Hee. :) You might want to check that the forum install's up-to-date: I think they came out with a security update recently, and there's usually a rash of people trying to hack forums that haven't updated after that happens.

Its an anthro comic and it does look lovely. She's been working hard to actually get the first pages done.
