Yeah, I think it's more apparent if you see the end of the scene before. I'm not sure when I figured out that some mangaka use that, or a similar type of treatment to "fade up" into a new scene, but I know it was some time after I started reading manga when I finally figured it out. XD
I don't remember how I found it, but I tracked down what is possibly the only mention in ENglish of a group of rowdy fighting Tibetan monks, one of whose weapons is a large thing called a monk's key, which seems to be wielded much like a rope dart. :)

"Before gay existed as a concept" is always fun, though my own research is pretty much limited to the Greek and Roman flavors, with a passing nod to samurai. Also, I did not know that-- thank you! It makes it that much more interesting when it's highly plausible.
