I HAVE A SCANNNNNNNER!!
It picks up great subtleties in shading - I think I sold the marker piece I was thinking of testing, so I don't have that to show you, but I scanned in the cover of Minekura's Sugar Coat artbook so you can see:

I scanned that at 300ppi, then shrank it down for Web display. Here's an actual-pixel-size chunk of the scan. You can see the dots laid down by the printer as the book was printed, but they're fairly unobtrusive.

And it only took two worried phone calls to the boy (he used to work a help desk) to get it up and working. For some reason the scanning driver isn't installing to Photoshop, so I can't scan from within PS, but I'll be emailing Epson to ask what the hell's up with that. It was happening with my previous scanner, too, so I know it's not the scanner's fault.
