I HAVE A SCANNNNNNNER!!

It picks up great subtleties in shading - I think I sold the marker piece I was thinking of testing, so I don't have that to show you, but I scanned in the cover of Minekura's Sugar Coat artbook so you can see:

I scanned that at 300ppi, then shrank it down for Web display. Here's an actual-pixel-size chunk of the scan. You can see the dots laid down by the printer as the book was printed, but they're fairly unobtrusive.

Wheeeeeeeeee!

Looks good. How big was the scanner you got again? I know it was much larger than my dinky 8.5x11.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Nice! I would like to get a larger scanner, but I really don't have anywhere to put it. Hopefully you don't have any problems with it. I had a cheap scanner that would crash every time I logged in because of something with XPs fast user switching.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I had to completely rearrange my office area to find a place for it, especially since the SCSI cable that came with it was so short, the CPU has to be within a foot and a half of the scanner. Arg!

And it only took two worried phone calls to the boy (he used to work a help desk) to get it up and working. For some reason the scanning driver isn't installing to Photoshop, so I can't scan from within PS, but I'll be emailing Epson to ask what the hell's up with that. It was happening with my previous scanner, too, so I know it's not the scanner's fault.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, yeah that would be a pain in the ass to arrange. Hopefully they get everything figured out soon. I have scanned from PS for so long, I don't think I remember how to do it without.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Luckily it slaps a shortcut on my desktop, so I can find it, but it then saves to the hard drive instead of opening up in PS, which is just ANNOYING.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Eww yuck. Is it saving it as a .gif or .jpg when you scan? I had one pre-photoshop days that would save as a gif and compress all funny. Then when I got PS it would scan in there just fine.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
It gives me an option of saving as a tiff, so I use that so as to have no compression.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
That's even better :)

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oooooo, pretty!

When you next feel like procrastinating, I think everyone would be thrilled and privileged to behold...

1. "The foolish reptile has no divine powers!"

2. Onmyoji (the creepy animal foot guy! the woman with the fish in her mouth! the musical instruments with legs! etc!)

3. The pictorial history of Buddha Jumped Over the Wall

4. Chibi Sasuke and Gaara holding hands (unless you lost it they've gotten a room by now.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'll see what I can do. XD Mom reminded me that she's been asking me to draw a unicorn for a woman she works with - and she knows what a big sacrifice it is for me because she knows what I think about unicorns but the woman loves unicorns - but it's kinda pressing right now, since the woman's birthday is on April 2nd *and* she spent all day in the hospital after a bad allergic reaction to a drug. So I kinda need to get that done. :D Maybe I'll do it in marker so I can test the scanner on my markers.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ohh. I do want to see when you are done if you wouldn't mind?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
:D I'll OMG SCAN IT WITH MY NEW SCANNER!!!!! and upload it. XD

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well if that is all it takes to get excited about it sure. Do you know what kind of unicorn you are going to draw yet?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've got a book called The Art of ANimal Drawing and I'll be, er, referencing it pretty closely. :) (No, I won't trace, but I expect I'll be looking quite closely at its poses) I ahve yet to decide if I want to do a fiery, rearing unicorn or a sweet knock-kneed unicorn colt.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry I wasn't so specific. Are you going for a more exotic traces of deer/cat looking unicorn or the horse with a horn variety? Lion tail or horse mane? Cloven hooves?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
If I do anything other than Horse with a Horn, it requires design, which requires time and I want to get it done ASAP. :) I'll deal with cosmetic stuff like the tail and hooves as I get there.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's up now. :) Tracing from copyright-free photos = teh win. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd like to see that too. Maybe you could make it a non-wussy unicorn? I like these ones: http://www.amazon.com/Birth-Firebringer-Firebird-Meredith-Pierce/dp/0142500534/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-9899875-2512010?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174791343&sr=1-1

(And then after you give her the original, you can use it as a basis for a drawing of Hot Character of the Moment riding a unicorn, and sell copies at A-Kon!)

Let's see, whom would cause the most cognitive dissonance riding a unicorn... Light? L? Sephiroth? Kakashi? Gojyo? Sanzo?

I see a little cartoon of Sanzo on a unicorn, aiming his gun at Gojyo while the latter makes virginity jokes.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
1. I would love to see Sanzo on a unicorn.
2. I know it is a younger kids book, but did you ever read it? I liked the Darkangel Trilogy and the little blurb on amazon looked pretty good.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I do like it, but not as much as Darkangel.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I never read it - if it had come out when I was in my Unicorn Phase and reading everything that I could about unicorns I'd probably ahve inhaled it. But I burned out on unicorns a long time ago and am now allergic to them, even deconstructed unicorns that are evil or something.

[identity profile] frostedelves.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow, that cartoon idea is hot.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's up now. Not real likely to be used as the basis for anything. XD

[identity profile] frostedelves.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! Can't wait to see a Telophase unicorn. XD

Want a spare unicorn for the unicorn bag?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
XP It's depressingly normal, not like [livejournal.com profile] ursulav's My Leper Pony or anything. :)

[identity profile] frostedelves.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the glee it engenders is unharmed by its normality. The entertainment value is flavored by thinking of you chanting quietly while drawing it, "must not show loathing... must not show loathing..." ;)

[identity profile] celestriad.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
are those guys from wild adapter? if so, i haven't read it yet...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes - that's the Wild Adapter artbook.

[identity profile] marith.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, good - my brain was getting confused there. "But both of them look kind of a lot like Hakkai..."

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Minekura can really only draw about six different people. XD

[identity profile] flyingpeachbun.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
When I first looked at this I was sure it was something for Saiyuki since that's your thing @_@ It looks exactly like him...
ext_99196: (yaay teamwork)

[identity profile] celestriad.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, ok. i was going to say, that looks like hakkai but i don't know who that other dude is... XP

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
The first volume is out now in English from Tokyopop, with a gorgeous production and color pages; it's mostly set-up, but also a good story in its own right. I recommend it.

[identity profile] flyingpeachbun.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
:O Tokyopop put color pages in a book?? I haven't looked at anything in a while... I'm surprised!
ext_99196: (luxord go bye-bye XD)

[identity profile] celestriad.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh, i'll have to take a look at that, then. :)

*ENVY*
Man, it would be awesome to scan my large comic pages in one shot rather than two then having to photoshop the halves together!

*starts saving pennies*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG YES. Even if the quality of the scan wasn't any better then the desktop scanner I had before, the ability to scan an entire comic board at once would make it totally worth the price.

[identity profile] pzb.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Jealous, Party of 1. Anyone wanna join me? (course, I just dumped a load of money on a bedroom set, so new scanner will not be in the stars for me for some time.)

Oh, hey, btw, seating charts were posted for AKon last night. Hi, table buddy. :D

We're in D.

Wheeee! XD I'm getting a new bedframe this coming weekend, but it's gonna be a cheapie from IKEA, and bought mostly so I can get the two mattresses I've been sleeping on for a year and a half off the floor. XD

*waves* Here's hoping it doesn't get reshuffled before the con. XD

[identity profile] pzb.livejournal.com 2007-03-25 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
With the new house, we discovered our monstrosity of a bedroom set we have now will not fit at all in our new room.

I miss IKEA. It'll be a few months yet before we get one in Portland. Right now, the closest is in Seattle, 5 hours from here (though we're gonna be up there in two weeks for SakuraCon so maybe we can squeeze in a trip XD.)

Steven promises that there will be no reshuffling after May 1st. :D We'll see. But yeah, I don't think we'll get shifted much.

[identity profile] flyingpeachbun.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
:O! Cool~~~ When you do a marker peice, tell me how well it scans to the original... I'm really looking for a scanner that doesn't wash out and distort my colors on traditional since I want to do more of that now XP
12 x 18? @_@ That's gotta be really expensive huh? Where did you get it? :O I'm curious~ lol

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
eBay. :) Used, did a Buy It Now for $350 + $90 shipping. I made sure that the listing said it worked great, because there are a lot of people who sell non-working ones for parts (which I may, one day, have to buy XD) or who only test to see if the scanner powers on and don't bother to scan anything, and that the seller had great feedback, and that all the necessary parts were included (SCSI card, SCSI cable, power cable). It's an Epson Expression 836XL. There are a few sellers selling new ones, which go for $1600+, so $350 + shipping for a used one in working order is a bargain.

I used to buy cheap scanners for $75 or so, use them til they broke or started scanning badly, and get a new one. Last time I bought one, I reasoned that if I bought a more expensive scanner, it would work better, so I spent $275 on one. The scan wasn't any better than the cheap ones, which was annoying. I'd done a bit of research (i.e., asked nyanko_chan over on DA XD) and found that this was a really good, reasonably affordable used, scanner, and after a year and a half of wiffling back and forth on it, decided that if I were going to spend $300 on a scanner, I might as well buy one that had very good reports on it, and went for it.

[identity profile] flyingpeachbun.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow that's a really good deal :3
Eeeee if only I was making money at this thing called art XP Wow, I so can't afford that... I'll have to stick to ones under 100 for now :PPPP
I really don't know how to tell if a scanner is good though until I've actually scanned with it... if it's good, it should scan without distoring colors or washing out my colors XP I hope I can find one soon!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-03-26 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've yet to find one other than this one that didn't have contrast problem with subtle shading, because they're just not sensitive enough to pick up the nuances. I did scan a page that I'd practiced shading with markers on, and it scanned very well, far better than any of my other scanners would have.

Now I have to actually practice more with my markers because I can't blame the scanner for a crappy pic anymore. XD

[identity profile] flyingpeachbun.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's those subtle shades that are very important to the image...
Hopefully they'll improve the less expensive scanners someday soon :P

LOL~ don't say that X3... but practice is good!

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2007-03-27 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
That's awesome!
