The answer...

...to the car question I posed earlier today.

Symptom: When I accelerated from a stop sign or a red light, my wiper blades would wipe the windshield once.

The motor mount was broken.

What kept the wipers from going all the time was a signal being sent constantly down a wire. When I accelerated, the broken motor mount meant that the engine bounced slightly and hit the wire, breaking the connection long enough for the blades to wipe once. Otherwise it didn't touch the wire, so that continued to work the rest of the time.

After we got it back from the mechanic, I noticed a huge hunk of metal hanging down beneath the car. We went in, and the dman frame was broken, six inches from where they replaced the motor mount. That was the last straw, and Dad sold the car. :)

That is incredibly messed up. The frame broke...

Buy German. *holds up Volkswagen sign*

I think that they broke the frame while fixing the motor mount, actually. But the question was moot - we got rid of it and bought me a Honda. :D

I would still have the first Honda Civic I bought, in 1995, if some guy in a snazzy red rental car had not rear-ended it at 45 MPH two years later. (Stopped in traffic on an exit ramp -- all I could do was sit and wait for the impact!) I ran out and got the 1997 model Civic the moment I had the insurance check in hand. That one IS still in my driveway, and has gone to the shop exactly once, for a check engine light that turned out to be nothing. The Japanese build my kind of car.

Though I do have to admit that my parents' 1967 Plymouth station wagon lasted a good long time... with only one engine rebuild and some spectacular parts failures a thousand or so miles from home, that is. Then there was my husband's Ford Explorer, which blew up its transmission on a steep mountain pass. In January. While we had a tiny infant and a 5-year-old. Penny from Eugene, who stopped to help, I still think of you with gratitude! We replaced THAT steaming heap of crap with a Toyota van...

I'd buy Honda if it weren't that I had a slightly lower budget than necessary, and despise negotiating for cars. Although my bank (USAA) now offers a service where they'll negotiate for you if you finance through them, so maybe the next time I need to get a car I'll go that route.
