AnimeFest non-report

The answers to, and some explanations for, yesterday's poll are below the cut.

I should also mention, for those who don't read [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija's journal, that as is required in the contract for all anime conventions, there was a religious convention occurring at the same time: a Southern Baptist convention, so there were lots of Baptists wandering around looking slightly offended at all the weird costumes. And there was also a large Indian wedding on Saturday night, so there were many, many women wearing beautiful saris wandering around.

While she was at AnimeFest, I think [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija...

...made a small child cry. - 18 (34.0%)

Nope.

...with [livejournal.com profile] telophase, acquired a small entourage of hangers-on. - 41 (77.4%)

Yup. In addition to the small group o'friends who periodically hung out at the table, after the Writing For Manga panel Sunday afternoon, we gathered a small group of people who followed us back to the table and talked for a while.

On the way back, we got trapped in the hall by the Japanese band Flow: the con was Providing Security for them in a very ostentatious manner to show the band and their managers etc. that the con was, in fact, Providing Security. So the vanguard came through and made everyone stand to the side in the hall as the band came through. And for some reason they didn't let the band go directly into the panel room, so all of us were all trapped together in the hall. The girl next to me said "We're trapped in teh hall with the very cute Japanese band!" and their translator actually translated it to them. :D The band memebers laughed, and smiled and said thank you. And the the security people realized that it was sort of silly for us non-band-entourage-people to stand there doing nothing, so they let us go on to our destination.

...offered free rice crackers with every purchase of Project Blue Rose. 31 (58.5%)

Technically no: she offered free Japanese chocolate with each purchase. The rice crackers were free if you just looked at the stuff on the table.

...addressed an Indian wedding guest in fluent Hindi. 28 (52.8%)

I suppose the only reason that more of you didn't pick this was that you, perhaps, don't know that Rachel lived in India for five years as a child (and wrote a book about the experience, All the Fishes Come Home to Roost, whose paperback edition is coming out at the end of the month).

And there was, indeed, a large Indian wedding at the hotel Saturday night. Rachel, however, did not, in fact, speak to any wedding guest in fluent Hindi as far as I know.

...attempted to sell not-quite-gay-porn to 14-year-olds. 35 (66.0%)

Damn but some of those 14-year-olds look like they were in their 20s...

...drew a picture-- and sold it. - 27 (50.9%)

Nope!

...talked an innocent young woman into publicly confessing her sexual fantasies. - 38 (71.7%)

She was commissioning a picture from me, and Rachel was instrumental in slowly drawing out some details she wanted in it. :) Which were a quite popular sort of fatasy, involving an office, a desk, and being bent over it, but with nothing that would make it more than a PG-13/R rating and I suspect that there's a lot of people reading this who are going to be interested in seeing me scan and post it. XD (What, tell you who's in it? You'll just have to keep reading and see if I deign to tell you.)

...dressed up as "More Special" Sasuke. 21 (39.6%)

Nope. We looked for anyone dressing as More Special Sasuke, but nobody did. We saw a Curse Marked Sasuke, who looked at us and posed for us with an expression of utter derision, thus provign he was entirely in character.

...mortally offended Saiyuki voice actor Greg Ayres. 22 (41.5%)

Yup! In public! On a panel! I'll let her tell the story in her LJ.

...shared a bed with Riza Hawkeye. 23 (43.4%)

One of our roommates cosplayed Hawkeye. Another one was the best Roy I've ever seen. I'll post the pictures after I get them off the camera and converted.

...shared a bed with mortally offended Saiyuki voice actor Greg Ayres. 17 (32.1%)

That would be a no. And I want to know why 32% of you thought this was plausible, or at elast funny enough to pick. :D

...performed a take-down on Itachi. 20 (37.7%)

Nope!

...was assaulted by yet another Very Important Con Guest. 24 (45.3%)

This was referring to her getting poked in the belly by Harlan Ellison at Worldcon. but she did manage to avoid physical assault by any of the guests here.

...bought a T-shirt that reads GLOMP ME AND DIE. 30 (56.6%)

No, although we saw them and joked about getting one.

...did something else outrageous that I will mention in the comments. 10 (18.9%)

Thus proving that most people who choose this option in fact UTTERLY FAIL to actually post any outrageous actions.

-----------------------------

Congoers commissioned [livejournal.com profile] telophase for these pictures:

Sora from Kingdom Hearts in a button-down shirt. 18 (35.3%)

Nope. One of my usual commissioners at A-Kon likes me to draw her anime characters wearing button-down shirts, but she wasn't in evidence at AnimeFest.

Third Hokage with his shirt off. 19 (37.3%)

Nope. :)

Time-skipped Neji with his shirt off. 25 (49.0%)

Nope, although I'd have been quite willing to.

Orochimaru with his shirt off. 22 (43.1%)

Right commission, wrong con. There's an A-Kon attendee who apaprently quite likes the TOTALLY FUCKING CRAZYEVIL type* who commissions pictures of Orochimaru with his shirt off. I've done two for her. But she was not at AnimeFest.

* Which doens't bother me, other than making me slightly bemused, because there are much, much worse things out there as will be evidenced by an entry farther down the page.

Kisame with his shirt off 16 (31.4%)

Got lots of these. No, I'm lying, obviously. Shirtless Kisame gets no love.

Two characters from Tales of Symphonia in a compromising position in an office. With their shirts off. 25 (49.0%)

Yup! This is the one mentioned above where Rachel managed to make the girl blush as she drew out the details of what she wanted in the picture.

Rachel has no shame.

For the record: a half-naked Kratos pinning Yuan to a desk in an office. Not drawn yet - most of the commissions I took home to do and will mail them when finished.

Fai from Tsubasa with an eye missing. - 17 (33.3%)

Yup. And he does, indeed, lose an eye later on in the series so it's not a strange fetish. I did this one at the con and will post the photo we took of it later.

The cat-boys from Loveless with their feet stuck in glue. 25 (49.0%)

No. Thank God. The feet-stuck-in-glue thing refers to a conversation Rachel and I had about Creepy Guys. Every con circuit has its own Creepy Guy who commissions artists to draw pictures of various fetishes or other choice situations. The Creepy Guy on the A-Kon/AFest circuit usually asks for pictures of himself having sex with anime characters, and if the artist is young, female, and cute, he sometimes asks for pictures of themselves having sex with him. Uh, yeah. He doesn't ask me for anything, not even G-rated pictures, after I told him a couple of years ago that I wasn't comfortable with the sort of things he asked for. He didn't press me, because I am a master of Disapproving Librarian Look no Jutsu.

Ironically, I don't actually have a problem with drawing pr0n, other than that I've done so little of it I'd actually need serious reference XD, it's just Creepy Vibes that I have issues with.

The feet-stuck-in-glue thing came up when I told Rachel about another Creepy Guy who does the Midwest con circut, IIRC, who I was told asks for pictures of various furry characters with their feet stuck in glue. I think it made an impression on her.

Ichigo and Renji from Bleach in a lovingly detailed compromising position. With their shirts off.
34 (66.7%)

Yup. :) And she kept coming back to the table to refine her request. I'm not sure if she knows me through LJ or through DA or through A-Kon, because I am horrible at remebmering names and faces, especially at cons, so if you're out there reading this: hi! And I'll get to it as soon as I can! XD

Dark Cloud and Kakashi in the same picture. 18 (35.3%)

Yup. Actually, it was Dark Cloud, Vincent, and Kakashi, but I couldn't remember the third person when I was making out the poll and I hadn't unpacked yet.

I'm rather looking forward to drawing Vincent. I think he's cute. XD Although I'm not sure how I'm going to arrange the picture so that it makes sense that Kakashi is in there.

A picture of a rock star with the person commissioning it. 18 (35.3%)

Again, right picture, wrong con. This was from A-Kon this year.

The prettyboy clones from Advent Children in a compromising position. With their shirts on, for a change. 28 (54.9%)

Nope, sad to say.

Mortally offended Saiyuki voice actor Greg Ayres. 22 (43.1%)

Nope. :)

The Project Blue Rose boys. With their shirts ... you know the drill. 35 (68.6%)

Aaaand ... nope. Sold quite a few copies, though - 39/40 or so. And had several people who'd bought it at A-Kon come up to the table and tell us how much they liked it and wanted to know if there was goign to be a sequel.

---------------------------

Will there be a more formal con report later? Probably not; I don't really do those sorts of things that much. But there will soon be pictures of cosplayers.

and wrote a book about the experience, All the Fishes Come Home to Roost

Sounds interesting.

The Fort Worth library doesn't have it. Haltom does, but as a nonresident I can't get books from there. I have asked Fort Worth to get it.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a good book. I liked it, and I'm not just saying that because I know her. :D

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know her and I liked it. And what's more, I've recommended it to my friend's book club because I think it's the type of book they'd enjoy reading and discussing. It's definitely worth reading if you can get your hands on a copy.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's coming out in trade paperback in October, and should be in all the bookstores. You can read the first chapter and get Japanese chocolate for free here: http://www.rachelmanijabrown.com/roost.html

I thought the "mentioned in the comments" meant that you would be explaining later - kind of like a baseball trade with a player to be named later. I didn't understand that we were supposed to guess. ^_^

Every con circuit has its own Creepy Guy who commissions artists to draw pictures of various fetishes or other choice situations.
Jesus god yes. There was this one guy who used to go around comic conventions asking comic creators to draw their characters, and this is a quote, complete with pauses: "could you draw <foo>...naked... with a crowbar....?"

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The question was in first person, so that option was in first person. :)

While she was at AnimeFest, I think rachelmanija...did something else outrageous that I will mention in the comments.

I think the young women who come up to me and blushingly explain that they'd like to see their favorite characters [pause] "...kissing? Is that okay? Um ... with their shirts off?" would be far more comfortable if they realized that OMG HALF-NAKED BOYKISSING is incredibly tame compared to what other people are asking without an ounce of shame.

yeah yeah yeah, I'm on muscle relaxants and three kinds of painkillers. I'm just happy that I no longer think I'm in a hospital in Mexico - like I did the first two days after regaining consciousness. (Hit-and-run bike accident. Well, we aren't entirely sure, because no witnesses and I don't remember the accident, but the damage to the bike - the bent wheels and frame and stuff - pretty much scream "hit and run.")

Speaking of which, I need to buy a sombrero and insist - INSIST! - that it's a souvenir from the trip.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Yeah, I read your LJ entries on it and went back through the other ones you linked and read about it - yowch!

And you absolutely need to buy a sombrero.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! You poor thing! I think that deserves a free copy of Project Blue Rose, if you don't have one already.

I am kind of surprised that no one who knows you read your entry from Mexico and went, "...Mexico...?"
solarbird: (Default)

[personal profile] solarbird 2006-09-05 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! I think everybody thought I was making a joke. Or a joke about Mexican jail. At least one person thought that's what I was doing. Nobody realised I was completely serious.

[identity profile] pzb.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my. Looks like you had a fun weekend. (Btw, email me or note me your addy on da...I found a nice little postcard for you this weekend at Kumoricon XD)

I'm morbidly curious to know what was said that mortally offended Greg. XD I find that highly amusing.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup! :) And cool: will do so. :)

Go read her journal for the enxt few days, and I'm sure she'll post the story. XD

(And I now have the impulse to refer to him as "mortally offended Saiyuki voice actor Greg Ayres" from now on out. MOSVAGA?)

[identity profile] pzb.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Mosvaga, huh? Sounds Russian. XD (And suddenly I think of your Goyjo icon "In Soviet Russia, Kappa feels you!")

damn, I need to make/find some Saiyuki icons....

[identity profile] maxineofarc.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Good grief, who *hasn't* been assaulted by Harlan Ellison? XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Me, actually. :D I ran the charity auction at the Aggiecon Ellison was a guest at and convinced the program director to let me have him for 20 minutes as a guest auctioneer. He was very nice to me at the time.

He did call the guy who paid $25 for a copy of the Sailor Moon RPG book a pedophile, but since people had pretty much come into the auction to experience Harlan Ellison as performance art, the guy was amused and not insulted.

Good lord. EVERYONE in CLAMP has to lose an eye EVENTUALLY, don't they?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't be a proper CLAMP title without it.

I think I should do a manga series in which everyone loses a kidney.

Naw, that's what Tsubasa was for, so they could get a second chance at it.

[identity profile] tirwen.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! So that's their real motive... heheh

[identity profile] tirwen.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I'm going to have to start reading Tsubasa again :)

[identity profile] chibi-nasu.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so incredibly interested in the morbidly offended Greg Ayres story. I shall be keeping an eye on [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija's LJ now to find out the full story xD

And random, I once won third place from popular vote in an online karaoke contest doing a duet to a song by FLOW that I had never heard prior to singing it.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I figure once enough pepple say they want to hear the MOSVA Greg Ayres story she'll post it. XD

And: woo! :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
* Meant to add, but hit the button too soon, that the next time I'm stuck in a hall with them I'll mention it. XD

[identity profile] chibi-nasu.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
xD w00t

[identity profile] juliansinger.livejournal.com 2006-09-05 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Given as I did know about the Ashram Schtuff, that would be why I picked that. Because it was just random enough to be plausible.

I picked sleeping with Ayres because, uh, now I can't remember why I thought it was funny. Probably just the Anger Sex, mostly. (I didn't actually think it was /plausible/, though, because Rachel has Class.)
snarp: small cute androgynous android crossing arms and looking very serious (Default)

[personal profile] snarp 2006-09-05 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny because of the image of someone being Mortally Offended in a bed, and being very stiff and muttering disgustedly about the pillow or something. It is a Kids in the Hall sketch in embryo.

Whee! Makes me tempted to place a duplicate commission ;)
