Via Neil Gaiman's blog, the evolution of Speech Balloons.

There are nowhere near enough speech scrolls in manga today, I must say.

There's something oddly appealing about those speech scrolls. I'd expect to see something novel like that in indie comics. Maybe I have, in fact.

What fun it would be to do a strip or two like that! (strange to compose for, though)

I know! It'd probably he horribly annoying to read a 150-page graphic novel like that, but the artist it me likes the design possibilities. XD

4komas or simple three-pagers might be just the thing.

You might enjoy this wank (http://www.journalfen.net/community/otf_wank/462898.html). In that special way that means "not at all". :D

Oh wow, your idea is brilliant! I'll gladly work sixty hours a week so I can split profits with you equally because I would be stupid to pass up this opportunity to work on your most awesome story!

Hell. They come from Hell, to test us.

What I kinda wonder about from time to time is the tendency to have everything in caps in latter 'traditional' speech balloons. Whenever I try drawing it, I feel like I'm having the character shouting at someone. XD

It bothers the hell out of me if the text isn't in all caps. It's like seeing the kind of font used in kids' picture books and first-grade readers, with their irritating lowercase As and Rs, used in grown-up text: there's somethign fundametnally wrong with it, and it means I'm looking at the text instead of reading the story, and that is entirely the wrong effect.

That link is awesome.

I like those old speech scrolls, they look awfully pretty.
