oh dear...

...I got Tokyopop's Return to Labyrinth at lunch today and I may be forced to spork it.

ETA: Here'a a Newsarama interview with Jake Forbes, the writer and developer of Return to Labyrinth. It's got a few sample pages.

spork it? I'm unfamiliar with the term. explain please?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Stab it with a spork umpteen times, metaphorically. In other words: ranting bad review.

See reply below. :)

It will have to wait until I've finished the book and see if it rises above its first chapter or so. I'll just leave you with one tidbit, there's something like five inkers credited*. Can we say "rushed"?

* Maybe four. I'm not sure: I left it in the car so I wouldn't be tempted to read it instead of working on the website.

[identity profile] lilrivkah.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been looking all over for previews of the book's interior, and it's alarmed me somewhat that there are none. I'd like to hear your opinions on it.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The cover's gorgeous!

...Yeah.

I'll be writing something more in-depth later, but I think it was rushed, and I don't agree with some of the editorial choices - i.e., the artist, inker(s!), toners, etc would be fine on another project. (plus, I think Labyrinth, of all properties, shouldn't be shounen.)

But I have to finish the book before I can give it a fair go. :D

Mangablog linked to the Newsarama interview with Jake Forbes (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=79367) and has a few sample pages.

*cringe*

Not horrible but . . . TP seriously needs to hire some better inkers and toners. I've seen Chris Lie's art before and his pencils are better than that.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There's several inkers credited. I will admit: they did a great job of making it look like one inker did the full book. Unfortunately, it's not the right inker. And the tones look better in 72ppi than in print: the studio that toned it tried to color with tones instead of using them to emphasize the graphic design of the page. (Although they may have been forced to do that by the inks: you need really strong inks with well-spotted blacks to be able to tone effectively.)

Oh, please do spork!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes, I will. :D But I must webpage now. Must ... get ... off ... LJ .....

Oh dear, and I was so hoping it would be good :( Yes, enlighten us with the Spork of Incisive Criticism!

(I really miss Broog (http://alienfilmcritic.blogspot.com/).)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a property with a well-defined look and a lot of high hopes attached to it, so it was going to be hard from the outset to live up to. We'll see how it lasts.

[identity profile] marith.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*reads interview happily* Thanks for the link!

....the idea of a "Lost Girls" volume focused on Sarah and Labyrinth and Jareth is mind-melting. Moore and Gebbie probably won't do it, but oh I hope someone does.

fanfic, ahoy!

[identity profile] asteres.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not certain how good an idea it is, but I'm still sitting on my copy - got it Wed. Now I need to watch the movie. I actually managed to make it this long without watching the whole thing through...or at least remembering it. I've been sitting on the DVD for about two months.

[identity profile] flyingpeachbun.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Im crying inside ;o;~~~ The cover is absolutely amazing.. If the art inside was the same or even similar, which I was expecting..delicate, detailed lines and all...it would be great...The cover and the inside don't match at all... so no sale with me >o<;;

Im not saying the artist is bad, it's just the wrong style in my opinion...
and I think it all looks horribly rushed. The ink, the toning... it's just a big disappointment for my high hopes.

[identity profile] marumae.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I take it you didn't hear about the incident? XD A friend of mine got her copy of the Return to Labyrinth manga two weeks early right? She too found it horrible, painful.

[identity profile] marumae.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Also on the sporking DOOOOO EEEEEET!

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-08-06 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, so the cover was done by the Alichino artist, but the interior art isn't? No wonder it's disappointing.
