POTC2

My POTC2 review: I had a damn good time at the movie, despite a quibble here and there, and it completely avoided doing what, for me, was the worstest, most horriblest part of POTC1: where Will showed up dressed as D'Artagnan, a hundred years out of period.

I liked the giant rolling things.

I wanted to get her going all the way down and coming back up again, but I couldn't fit it into 40K, so I had to settle for a truncated shimmy.

I was enjoying POTC2, up until the rather annoying fact that they settled NOTHING at the end of the movie, and blatantly made it a set up for the next one. Not a single plot line was resolved by the end, and then they just threw out this random thing and brought whatshisface in, despite that making NO SENSE. No, I am not a happy POTC2-goer.

I'd heard it was a cliffhanger ending, so I didn't have a problem with unresolved plotlines, because I was expecting them to be unresolved.

You'd probably like Ask a Ninja's review (http://www.askaninja.com/node/1175). "Trust me! I fought a kraken! It's not that hard!"

Cliffhanger endings are fine. But usually, at least SOME stuff is taken care of. Had they taken down Jones and then had to go off on X, as they did? I'd have been fine. It was the complete lack OF any resolution that annoyed me most.

[identity profile] isancho.livejournal.com 2006-07-09 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, there was a bit of resolution. Some of the characters were safe. Some were reunited. One guy is getting his title and life back. They all found what they initially sought in the film, and they learned a lot about Davy.

I'd argue that there is just as much resolution here (maybe more) as in, say, The Matrix: Reloaded. In both cases, it's really just one long story that had to be split for time/profit.

Yeah, it wasn't until the second movie came out that I heard it was going to be a trilogy. So, while I was completely thrown off by the sudden ending, I wasn't too upset about it.
I had to wonder, though, whether they were intended to be a trilogy from the very start, or whether they only decided to do that after the first one was so popular. I think it's the formaer, though, since it's Disney and Johnny Depp, so they probably forsaw it being a big hit. Also, the first one wasn't just Pirates of the Carribean, it was Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl.

Most contracts for action movies are for three movies, but I suspect that's it's rare for the three movies' scripts to be written before the first one is released. They almost certainly did not have the plot of the 2nd movie nailed down in 2003, though as they overlapped the shooting for 2 and 3, I suspect the scripts for those were fairly finalized at the time they started shooting 2.
