Webhosting...

Oh yeah. I've had a chance to play around a wee bit with magatsu.net, and I know there's at least one person out there who'd like a FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE XD subdomain for whatever, so I figure I'd post about it ...

(Any and all of this subject to change at my whim. I reserve the right to refuse your request if you've never posted here before and I don't know you from Adam's off ox.)

So, ok, if you want a free subdomain to put up art, a blog, host fic, have a forum, sell stuff, distro your vidding results, or just have a place to host pictures that won't die from lack of bandwidth, let me know. What I can set up for you:

your own webspace (you're on your own for desiging the webpage. :D)
your own FTP
a MySQL database
PHP if you want to use it. (not required - you can use plain old HTML if you want)
whatever PHP software you want to install yourself
webmail

I can install, if you want:
a forum (phpBB)
a Jabber chat server
a shopping cart (Zen Cart)
WordPress blogging software
Advanced Poll
a MediaWiki wiki
Joomla content management system
Gallery Image Album
WebCalendar Calendar

Now, you won't get an incredible amount of disk space, because I only get 20 GB total with this account and I'll probably only allot you a gig or so of that unless you can convince me that you've got a really good use for it, so you're not going to be able to distribute movies or a lot of video. But then, I don't want you distributing movies or music because the MPAA and RIAA are going to come down on me, seeing as how I'm the ultimate owner of the account. They don't seem to be worried about vids, so I'm not concerned about those, if you want a place to host 'em.

ETA: I'm going to assign everyone a gig of space to start, and so I'm going to limit my total number of subdomains to 15. :)

I'm wavering on scanlation distribution: if anyone complains, Dreamhost will shut it down ASAP. Small-scale distro to, say, your friendslist I've got no problem with, but I'm unsure about putting up a site. If it's the least bit popular, it'll suck the bandwidth like there's no tomorrow anyway, and I'd rather not have that.

You cannot install BitTorrent software on there: Dreamhost will take it down the second they see it because it's in their ToS.

So: pretty much anything else is game, I think. You wanna host an HP pr0nfic archive, I'm OK with that. (just keep an eye on the bandwidth. XD)

You will also be expected to:

-- make your own backups. I won't be keeping any, and Dreamhost will keep some, but never trust a hosting company to do that for you.

-- keep your site secure. If you install software on it, make sure you've got the latest updates with security patches. You are also responsible for making a secure password.

-- if there's any exploits in your account, hackers, DDoS, spammers, whatever, I'm shutting it down the second I find it, without contacting you first. (DreamHost will probably find it first and shut the account down before contacting me, anyway.) Which is another reason to keep your backups current. I'll shut it down and then let you know what I've done.

-- if your site is threatening to kill the bandwidth that month, I'll contact you. If you don't do anything, I'll take it down for the rest of the month.

You rock, and I would much like to take you up on this for a fic-site-- my stuff (of which there is not much) and my wife's stuff and that of my housemates. All of our stuff together will make a reasonable amount of content. We've been tossing around the idea of having a site for a while now, but no one had enough content to justify getting a whole domain name, or knew anybody who had spare subdomains, or wanted to deal with the hell that is frex geocities. We'd just need webspace, no frills, with possible webmail to provide a means of people commenting without having access to the the accounts we use for daily life.

I don't *think* there's any Harry Potter pr0n, but I've got thirty-odd pages of SexynoJutsu!Naruto/Jiraiya lurking around here somewhere... XD (I made a bet with myself a while ago that I could do that and make it both plausible and totally not offensive in any way. I won, but I haven't dared inflict it on the Internet as yet.)

:D Absolutely! Just email me the subdomain name you want and I'll set it up. Bearing in mind that I've only set up one test user so far, so the process is bound to be a bit rocky. XD

By default it'll be an FTP-only account, which just means you don't get access to the control panel that I've got. :D I've got the option to let you have shell access if you want to ssh/telnet in, with the options of: /bin/bash, usr/bin/tcsh, user/bin/ksh, or usr/bin/zsh. (I will admit that though I've had a shell account on my own webspace for years and have messed about in it a bit, I have no idea about the differences between those, but if one or more of you's comfortable with shell accounts, I'll set it up.)

* I'll set up postmaster@[blah].magatsu.net for you first, and we can worry about what-all other addresses you want afterwards. I can also set up a catchall that forwards to another of your addresses so you can randomly put up things like phlebotomist@[blah].magatsu.net or imawanker@[blah] and have them all channeled to one particular address, if you want. :)

DH doesn't want catchalls being forwarded outside of DH accounts, because when spam is forwarded, DH gets blocked as a spammer. But I can forward specific email addresses to outside accounts.

I was wavering on this since I already have a bandwidth-unlimited 1 gig university account (and hence less need for webspace than many other people I'm sure), but if you have anything left over after the initial rush for subdomain space has died down, I'd be happy to have one. *G*

...I wonder what the university's policy on graduated seniors is. I'm tempted to think they'll let me keep the webpages up, at least, since they're low-bandwith and double as advertisement. But if not, my maybe-yes is a definite-yes.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-06-22 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this mad rush for subdomain space. *pushes through clamoring throngs* (I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this blog, since I know most people either don't need webspace or have their own already, but someone did post a week or so back wanting space, so I knew at least one person would take me up on it. XD Now, if I were foolhardy courageous enough to offer it on Deviantart...? Might be a different story.)

Anyway, sure, no problem. :)

Yaaaaay. sd.maagatsu.net, if that's possible, and I guess you email me the password? I've never been hosted before.

Re: XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-06-22 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much. I could put a password of your choosing in, but DH will generate a random one that's significantly tougher than anything else anyway. I'll have to see if/how you can change your own password - I know I can re-set it for you to something you want if you hate the alphanumeric soup DH produces, and I'd think you'd be able to re-set your own, but I'll have to poke around the help wiki and forums to figure that out. So, y'know, if you want me to change it before I figure that out, don't give me any of your usual passwords. :D

Will go set that up shortly...

Sent email to your Gmail account about it. :) You've got simple FTP access as of now; if you want more access you'll have to send me some more info, as I say in the email.

[identity profile] gryfeathr.livejournal.com 2006-06-22 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been staring at this for a while, so--if the clamouring throngs dies down I would be absolutely excited if you'd allow me webspace (...can that sentence get any more passive voice? XD) I've been considering a website for artness that wasn't DevArt for a while, and I know my art would not attract the glittering throngs that are the death of servers everywhere. All I would need would be php and mysql, if only to learn me some php shortcuts, and I know the wonders of smallest possible art file sizes.

Either way, this whole thing is quite teh awesome.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-06-22 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure! :D Now that I've set one up for [livejournal.com profile] sub_divided, I know what I'll need from you - email it to me this at telophase14 (at) gmail (dot) com.

For simple FTP/shell account access:
a username
the subdomain name you want

If you want slightly more privileges (I recommend this), so you can change your password and personal info, manage email addresses for that subdomain, have an announcement or mailing list, and manage your own MySQL database without having to email me and ask me to do it, then I'll need more info. If you wish to preserve privacy it's OK to make stuff up, because none of this has to be accurate info, as long as you remember it. :) WebID is a username - this is not the same as the username above (confusing, I know).

Filled out and sent. Thanks!

It only took me half an hour of wibbling about a domain...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-06-22 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)

Got it - I'll get in and start setting it up. :D

Hey, took me weeks XD

[identity profile] gryfeathr.livejournal.com 2006-06-22 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoo!

This is very true. I don't even have polls. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-06-22 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Minor issue came up - just emailed you. :D

It's not a real opinion until I solicit the internet.

*salute!* Got it, and fixed.

Of course not. The Internet Knows All. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.

My friend offered me 500mb for my art/manga site... but she has no idea how to set up a forum or shopping cart or any of those fun things. I'm working on posting my manga, but less of the weekly update kind.. at least at first while I get the hang of it.. I'd like to have a nice forum for all the story related business, people can use it to discuss, post their own artwork and get critiques n all that jazz... Php would be great for updating a comic, but I have absolutely no clue how to use that xox; so at least for a forum ( and possibly a shopping cart if I find use for it one day, lol)...I think a gig would be more than enough, if you want to give me a subdomain ^^;;;

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, no prob! Just email me the info I put above on [livejournal.com profile] gryfeather's comment. If you go for the full Web ID thing (basically a Dreamhost user ID), you can install the shopping cart etc. yourself - they make it lovely and easy to do. Their "one-click" install name isn't too far off the mark. :)

There's two items of info not in the comment - the security question is actually a list of four they give you that I didn't cut-and-paste. Just tell me the name of a pet, I'll put it in, and you go change it as soon as it's set up. :) The other thing is that usernames have to start with a lowercase letter.

Alright ;3 I sent the email, the first time I got an error sending it, so Im not sure if it'll get to you or not...

Got it!
