Domain name possibilities?
OK, so I'm not yet decided whether I'm going to splurge on a hosting package and start farming out subdomains to people I know, like I maundered on about last week. But my brain is, of course, insisting on picking out some potential domain names first, and as I'm not having much luck thinking of any, I figure I'd throw the field open to the internet.
Anyway. The primary purpose of this would be towave my technocock host subdomains to give free webspace to friends of mine who don't want to get domain names of their own. That being said, the domain name needs to be:
1) Short.
I mean, I like fun phrases like boyswithoutcars.net, but when you tag a subdomain name onto that like studionenuphar.boyswithoutcars.net, it gets ridiculous.
2) Able to be understood and remembered when being yelled across a parking lot.
I once complained to someone about a domain name because it couldn't easily be shouted across a parking lot, and he replied that he couldn't think of any situation in which he would shout it across a parking lot. Problem is, the day before, I had had to shout it across a parking lot - I'd been talking with people in the parking lot of a hotel after a con and as we were leaving, we exchanged URLS (none of us had paper or pen), and yanno? It's much easier to remember something short and simple, with no numbers or hyphens or easily-misunderstood misspellings in it.
3) Available.
Mind you, you think this would be self-evident, but I'm sure that if I didn't explicitly point this out, I'd be getting people saying "What about Nenuphar?" and I'd have to go check and of course nenuphar.net has already been taken by someone. It's easy to check if something's taken - type it in the address bar and see if it's got a webpage, or go to a page like gkg.net, and type it into the Start Here box and see what it says.
4) End in ".net". Yeah. I got a thing about that. I prefer .net. I'd do .org only if I fell in love with the domain name, and .com isn't appropriate unless it's a commercial site, I say.
5) Words from other languages encouraged, as are words with cool or appropriate meanings. I poked through a Latin word list earlier today at work and came up with four possibles:
salsus - salty, witty
satago.org - to ahve one's hands full (.net is not available, but for that meaning, I might get a .org)
stipis : small coin, gift.
suspiro : to sigh, draw a deep breath / long for, yearn after.
So, yes, this is all saying DO MY WORK FOR ME. But that's because I need to do art now, not fuss about with domain names! You will be performing an invaluable service!
If you managed to actuallyr ead all of that, here, have a shiny Internet cookie: O
