Artpost. Ish.
After inking two pages of Project Blue Rose today, I turned towards something fun. (I'm at the point in PBR where I hate the very sight of it - a normal response at this point in any big project.) This weekend I'd started doing a digital painting because my wrist was hurting enough that I couldn't do tight pen strokes for inking, and wanted to do big, loose strokes intead. Well anyway, that project got bogged down in the middle so after the two pages inked today I decided to redo it. Still in the sketch stage, and I'm not sure where I'm going from here, whether it's pencil, ink, or paint, but it's fun so far. And once I figure out where I'm going and go there, it can be an International Saiyuki Week post. XD

The young not-yet-Genjo-Sanzo doesn't look much like him, but I figure that can wait until later. The important part is Koumyowho I recently decided I totally have the hots for I HAVE NO KOUMYO ICONS THIS IS HORRIBLE.

I have multiple Koumyou icons, because I adore him. Feel free to share any, if you'd like.

The butterfly I was using was blue, but story-wise it would be more significant if it was orange - at one point in flashback, Koumyo folds airplanes out of orange paper and shows the young Sanzo how the orange of the paper makes the blue of the sky look more brilliant, which is some sort of Deep Inspiring Thought that isn't trite because of the skill of the writer. XD

It also reminds me, in a very good way, of the series of character-with-butterfly pictures in one of the new Gaiden Tankoubons. Is that a conscious echo? Have you seen those scans? (They're inserty-pictures, not spoilery, if you haven't been following Gaiden -- I can upload.) I think the butterfly that appears in each one is of very similiar shape, too.

I don't think I've seen the pictures you mention. The butterfly was a spontaneous thing - in the original painting I was attempting, he leaned that way merely so I could draw his face, and I think he was just enjoying morning sun on his face or something. And then I realized it looked better if he was looking at something, and the butterfy popped up. :)

Butterfly series: Goku (http://pics.livejournal.com/kintail/pic/0003pfq7/), Kenren (http://pics.livejournal.com/kintail/pic/0003skf5/), Konzen (http://pics.livejournal.com/kintail/pic/0003tp4c/), Tenpou (http://pics.livejournal.com/kintail/pic/0003w7fp/).

and they must've been offered up to all comers otherwise I wouldn't have made icons. =>

I'm gonna do something with it digitally, of course, but after this weekend in my painting course, I'm going to need to come up with something to paint, and I might just go for this. It's fanart, so I don't have the pressure of being 'good' - and i've got references to look at to help me with shapes and colors and such, but since it's an original composition, I can step out on a limb a bit and work on that sort of thing myself for a while.
Not to mention it's in the proper 16 x 20 proportion for the canvas, which is extremely important. XD

I think that would be lovely in color. The butterfly could be a monarch, and that would echo the orange paper airplanes.

(See why I get wrapped up in background detail whe attempting to write soemthing? I wanna be able to write something and throw in whatever the hell I want and have it work like it does in Saiyuki! Is it even possible to do that in prose?)

This is a very common writing problem, actually, and yes, you can do that in prose, though manga is the only media I've seen that does it on a regular basis.
The key is to decide what level of realism you want. There is no such thing as perfect... you know what, this is a post and I'll make it on my own LJ.
