Artpost. Ish.

After inking two pages of Project Blue Rose today, I turned towards something fun. (I'm at the point in PBR where I hate the very sight of it - a normal response at this point in any big project.) This weekend I'd started doing a digital painting because my wrist was hurting enough that I couldn't do tight pen strokes for inking, and wanted to do big, loose strokes intead. Well anyway, that project got bogged down in the middle so after the two pages inked today I decided to redo it. Still in the sketch stage, and I'm not sure where I'm going from here, whether it's pencil, ink, or paint, but it's fun so far. And once I figure out where I'm going and go there, it can be an International Saiyuki Week post. XD

The young not-yet-Genjo-Sanzo doesn't look much like him, but I figure that can wait until later. The important part is Koumyo who I recently decided I totally have the hots for I HAVE NO KOUMYO ICONS THIS IS HORRIBLE.

KOUMYOU LOVE.

I have multiple Koumyou icons, because I adore him. Feel free to share any, if you'd like.

Now that the US release of Reload is hitting the Burial arc, I totally have the hots for Koumyo as well think Koumyo is rather interesting.

It looks like he's blissed out on something :D It's a very calm looking sketch

Cute butterfly - though most Papilionids (the ones with the little tails on the hindwings) have a much more rounded forewing apex, extending a bit further out than the anal (bottom) angle. A ulysses or tiger swallowtail or an orangedog would be nicely colorful, too.

OH JESUS I'M A DORK.

um...yay cute boys!?

*is still a bug dork*

I think you've perfectly captured the other thing Sanzo learned from Koumyou - sit on your ass while other people work. XD
harukami: (You should have seen the other guy)

Man, Koumyou's high on life all the time. ♥ So much love for him. The picture's lovely and captures them both very nicely.

AWWW full of pretty happy! :D

High on somethin', at any rate. Sometimes I have to wonder about that pipe. XD

I have to add this icon to my list just to respond to that picture. =>

[identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, sweet!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
XD I was working from a photo, but didn't manage to reproduce it because it shwoed the butterfly from above, and I'm trying to do it from an angle. If you know of any photos that show one of them from an angle like that, it would be muchly appreciated. :D

The butterfly I was using was blue, but story-wise it would be more significant if it was orange - at one point in flashback, Koumyo folds airplanes out of orange paper and shows the young Sanzo how the orange of the paper makes the blue of the sky look more brilliant, which is some sort of Deep Inspiring Thought that isn't trite because of the skill of the writer. XD

Cool, thanks! Just took this one (and temporarily it's my default 'cause I forgot to change that radio button when I uploaded and I'm too lazy to change it back. XD)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes he's a very hot complex character, well worthy of further study.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
:D I'm hoping that if I color it, I will for once manage to nail what sunlight looks like.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Now we all know where he got it from! XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :D

Oh that's so cool! Amazing how you've managed to capture the motion that has just happened and the motion that's about to happen AND the (can't find the right word) "stillness" of the moment: clearly Koumyou's nose and the butterfly are destined to meet. Great expression on Koumyou, too, such a zen love for life.

It also reminds me, in a very good way, of the series of character-with-butterfly pictures in one of the new Gaiden Tankoubons. Is that a conscious echo? Have you seen those scans? (They're inserty-pictures, not spoilery, if you haven't been following Gaiden -- I can upload.) I think the butterfly that appears in each one is of very similiar shape, too.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :D I was indeed hoping to capture one of the few moments of stillness in their lives. XD

I don't think I've seen the pictures you mention. The butterfly was a spontaneous thing - in the original painting I was attempting, he leaned that way merely so I could draw his face, and I think he was just enjoying morning sun on his face or something. And then I realized it looked better if he was looking at something, and the butterfy popped up. :)

[identity profile] kintail.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
They are from the Gaiden Tankoubon vol 2, and I am ashamed to realize I did not make note of who took these pictures to give credit. I hope they don't mind me sharing them here.

Butterfly series: Goku (http://pics.livejournal.com/kintail/pic/0003pfq7/), Kenren (http://pics.livejournal.com/kintail/pic/0003skf5/), Konzen (http://pics.livejournal.com/kintail/pic/0003tp4c/), Tenpou (http://pics.livejournal.com/kintail/pic/0003w7fp/).

I snagged them from

http://pics.livejournal.com/ayonoi/gallery/00006cca

and they must've been offered up to all comers otherwise I wouldn't have made icons. =>

[identity profile] kintail.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, thank you! Those look like all the same ones I have in my poorly-labelled folder, so it must be where I've got them.

I've been planning to make the series of icons, too, next time I'm in an icon-making mood.... ~_^

Well, if you like these (http://pics.livejournal.com/kate_nepveu/gallery/0002bh71) you're welcome to them as-is or as bases, as to the rest of the icons in the public-use gallery. They aren't fancy but they have been cleaned up a bit from the shadows in the original pictures.

[identity profile] kintail.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, those are very nice, I will take you up on that offer. And don't worry, I'm much more of a stickler for crediting icons than I am with scans I save to my own computer and don't expect to share. *^_^*

Thank you!

You're welcome! Happy to be of use.

[identity profile] cerusee.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes it is!

[identity profile] cerusee.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's going to be pretty.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

I'm gonna do something with it digitally, of course, but after this weekend in my painting course, I'm going to need to come up with something to paint, and I might just go for this. It's fanart, so I don't have the pressure of being 'good' - and i've got references to look at to help me with shapes and colors and such, but since it's an original composition, I can step out on a limb a bit and work on that sort of thing myself for a while.

Not to mention it's in the proper 16 x 20 proportion for the canvas, which is extremely important. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww!

I think that would be lovely in color. The butterfly could be a monarch, and that would echo the orange paper airplanes.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
He's getting the special Southfarthing from Gandalf, obviously.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Do they have monarchs in China? *has no clue* I'm going to see what my local bug geek [livejournal.com profile] badnoodles comes up with, but the orange makes sense.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Do they have Jeeps and Marlboros in (ancient) China?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Point.

(See why I get wrapped up in background detail whe attempting to write soemthing? I wanna be able to write something and throw in whatever the hell I want and have it work like it does in Saiyuki! Is it even possible to do that in prose?)

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Word!

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Do I really want to reveal to you the secrets of writing? But then you won't need me any more!

This is a very common writing problem, actually, and yes, you can do that in prose, though manga is the only media I've seen that does it on a regular basis.

The key is to decide what level of realism you want. There is no such thing as perfect... you know what, this is a post and I'll make it on my own LJ.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-22 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there a secret handshake and a decoder ring?
