puppleball, we've gotta go to the Fort Worth zoo with both the cameras (they have a Komodo dragon!). :D I went to my local zoo (last time it was the Dallas zoo, this time Fort Worth) to try out my other lens - a 70-210mm zoom. It worked out muchly nicely for taking photos of animals, although there were a couple of times I wished that I'd had the other lens, because I needed a wider angle. I can't show you how spiffy the tiger habitat is because my lens wasn't wide enough to show anything. Next time!
Those are some gorgeous photos - love the flamingos especially, and I am not especially fond of the big pink dudes.
(P.S. Finished Death Note 1 - liked it a lot, but am hoping it will get a little ... well, deeper and less Gary Stu-ish. Am I doomed to disappointment?)
I have a complex relationship with zoo animals that generally involves lots of "Aw...!" and "Ah...!" and exclamations regarding how tiny or big it is, or how complicated its nest is, while I stay a few feet away from the fences in order to be the last to die should the animal escape its four layers of cage. :D
But it is sort of like Disneyland: people + outdoors + many different attractions that are actually pretty much the same, with trimmings.
Thank you! If you get in the market for a spiffy digital, I recommend the Nikon D50 - that's the one I've got. I've got two Nikon lenses from an old camera that work with it, but the base lens you can buy with it is good, too.
The silverback was snoozing when I first went by the gorilla enclosure, but he woke up and was philosophizing by the time I came back. I couldn't beleive how expressive he was. XD
(I have two lenses from my old Pentax K1000 but I don't know if they'd fit anything else, so I'd have to get a full kit and still so expensive but oooooooooh SLR. @_@ )
Man, I was thinking this would be great week for a zoo trip too. Marco's parents will be in town, I wonder if we can talk them into going (which means they'll pay for us, maybe even you...). Are you up for going so soon again? If so, when are you available?
I will let you know ASAP. Marco thinks it's a crazy idea since his mom had hip replacement surgery back at christmas, but work is she's walking around just fine and back to baking cakes (which she has promised she would no longer do), so I think she's perfectly fine going out to the zoo and the fresh air would be good for her. I'll see if he'll call her tomorrow and find out. I'm thinking Wednesday or Thursday would be a good days.
Cool. It's bigger than the Dallas zoo, but there's a small train that goes form near the entrance to the farthest-away and most-uphill spot, which cost $2 for a one-way trip and $3 for an all-day ticket, and I ended up taking it and walking back down, which worked out well (and kept me against the traffic, so the first hour I was there felt almost deserted). They also rent wheelchairs for $25 if she stops feeling up to walking (can't take it on the train, though). If we end up going, we want to be at the zoo when it opens at 10. I got there about 10:25 and while there was plenty of good parking at that time, it took a long time to get there because there was a huge line of cars to get into the parking lot and pay ($5 for parking. $10.50/adult entrance fee).
She said no at first, but Marco mentioned it was my spring break and I wanted to do something, so she changed her mind, saying she'd sit and rest somewhere if she got tired. I don't think it'll be a problem since we'll be going slow and stopping alot and she can sit and rest pretty often.
So what's the plan? If you can do the morning, which will make it much quicker to get in and park, then I can meet you there at 10.
I'll bring both lenses so you can try the 70-210mm one. I'm going to dig up my polarizing filter, if I can find it, and see how it does when shooting through water and Plexi.
Sounds good to me. :) There were plenty of benches and such from what I remember, and especially if we get there at opening time, there will be fewer people sitting on them.
It's also big enough that we can do just one section of the zoo if she's not up to doing a whole lot.

(Wait until L shows up and Light realizes he's not such hot shit after all.)

Eeh. I'm definitely trying the next volume, anyway, because I'm intrigued.

I never want to go to zoos until people start showing their pictures.

I think my favorites are the expresssive silverback ones--he does look so contemplative!
