Zooooooooooo!

[livejournal.com profile] puppleball and I took advantage of Superbowl Sunday and went to the zoo to try out our new cameras on subjects other than our cats.

BTW - Photobucket seems to be adding links to Photobucket in the default HTML for the image tags, so don't bother clicking on any of them - you'll just go to the Photobucket main page because I am too lazy to delete all that stuff.

Although I couldn't resist a couple of the cat. :D

And the most fun part - the river otters! [livejournal.com profile] puppleball managed to get the right viewing window and got a lot of really nice otter shots. When she posts them, I'll link them.

Bald eagles! The zoo has two of them at the moment - one is missing a win, we think, and the other is blind in one eye. The zoo only has bald eagles that can't survive in the wild, from what I understand.

[livejournal.com profile] puppleball, I never quite managed to get a good shot of the Fuck You Face from the second eagle, like you did. I'll ahve to beg for a copy of it so I can make a nice icon. :D

Omg those are so awesome!! What kind of camera do you have? is it digital? How many Megapix? Zoom?? (^^;; Sorry I always love bombarding ppl with questions on their tech stuff)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
:D Thanks! It's a Nikon D50 SLR digital camera, with a 28-85mm lens on it that I've owned for about 15 years. 6.0 megapixels. Most of the pictures above aere seriously cropped because I can't zoom in that close, but when you'r eposting the pics online, you can blow them up bigger than you can for print so the look like they're totally awesome when they're really about postage-stamp size. XD

[identity profile] koneko-desu.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh it's one of the super-snazzy ones (googled for image XDD That's what I call the non-flattish ones that fits in one's pockets XD). 15 years?? that baby must've cost a small fortune back then cuz it'd probably cost quite a hefty chunk even today O__o

I know what you mean about the pic sizes lol, I always count on shrinking the images on the computer to make them look sharper XDD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea how much the lens cost originally - my dad was an avid photographer and bought it and my original film camera body and gave them to me. But I'm glad I have it and another lens, because that meant I didn't ahve to spend money on a digital lens for the camera body and could just buy the body.

I've wanted a good digital camera for a very long time, and this one became within my reach after my grandparents contributed to the Buy Me A Digital Camera Fund. XD

Neat! Our zoo finally got smart a few years back and took away the chains and bars by the big cats. We went to the zoo in the summer, and since no one remembered to bring a camera all the animals (including the lions!) were up and moving around. You are lucky you got such nice shots!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
XD This one is slowly improving and building better habitats for its inhabitants. There's a zoo a couple hours away from me that has an African open-air exhibit set up such that you can't really see the barriers, so it looks like the plains, from what I understand.

[identity profile] awamiba.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The Caldwell Zoo (where I live) is like that. We have a members card (free guests!) if you ever are out this way. :)

Hee, cat in an Amazon box.

Also: otters! And tigers! And eagles! I die of cuteness.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
She loves her Amazon box. It's just the right size, i.e., slightly too small for her. XD

Wow! Awesome photos! I ♥ ring-tailed lemurs. And lions. And otters and...I just love animals XD

That second-from-last lemur picture really wants a caption contest.

"The Lemurian bobsled team isn't given much of a chance, but you have to admire their Olympic spirit!"

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't believe it when the second lemur came over and took up the exact same position, and I took a number of photos, trying to get them looking in the same direction at the same time, and they finally obliged. XD

Also, I really like the first elephant pic. ^_^

Might ask if I can borrow a few of those for references.

Ohhhhh, lemurs in a row!

And otters! If I was going to be an animal, I'd want to be an otter. They always look like they're having such a good time.

The elephant eye pic is bee-you-tee-full!

[identity profile] riofriotex.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
great photos, Telo. Which zoo is this - I should go.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
THanks! This is the Dallas zoo. If you go soon, they have baby otters, although when we were there, the babies and momma were in a small den (with one-way glass on it) nursing, and the momma had her back to the glass so we couldn't really see the babies. XD

I haven't been to the Fort Worth zoo yet, which I really should go sometime.

[identity profile] zorilita.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are some awesome photos!

I love the one swan? duck? in the midst of all the flamingos.

The last eagle picture is particularly lovely.

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
AHhaha the duo lemur pic looks like they are practicing yoga together!

Ok, totally off-topic (although the animals are waaaaay cute!) I got a couple of phone calls regarding ConDFW because some of the current Cepheids haven't gotten responses from the Volunteer coordinator and possibly artshow (although I'm really not sure on that one). If it's not too much trouble could you contact Lance at lancer92385 at yahoo dot com... to calm the little ones' fears? You totally rock Schilling.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-07 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know who volunteer inquiries is being sent to. I'm Art Show and I havne't gotten anything. Hm.

Pictures

I would love to post. Save me some trouble and send me instructions on doing pictures under cuts linked to photobucket if you have time, please? I should be able to have time to work on this tomorrow night. Spent all today working on a powerpoint for this next week.

Re: Pictures

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-07 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
The best part about Photobucket is that they give you the code and all you have to do is cut-and-paste. :) Go to www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) and sign up for an account - it's free - and after that, they provide a form to upload the pics. And you can upload up to 19 at once. They'll give you 3 types of code for each one - the direct URL, an IMG tag for the web and a bbs tag. Use the middle one - the IMG tag one (they just added the tags that link to Photobucket around those tags - just highlight the entire thing in the middle box and copy it; that's easiest rather than trying to work out what I'm saying.XD).

The LJ cut is:

<lj-cut>

If you want to put text in the cut:

<lj-cut text="Text goes here">

To end the cut, if there's anything you want to post in your journal after the cut tag and ahve it show up on your main page:

</lj-cut> (optional)

These are AWESOME pictures! These aren't digital cameras with zoom lens are they? They are plain 35mm? If they are digital ones please tell me what they are as I need to get one that allows you to change lenses but I don't know which ones are worth the money!

SO crisp!

Jade

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-09 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
These were shot with the Nikon D50 digital camera, which you can change lenses on. The camera body retails for about $560ish, with lens add another $100 or so. I got mine from B&H Photo and Video (http://www.bhphotovideo.com), which I've used before (they also have used equipment - if you keep visiting them a couple times a week or so, you can soemtimes find good deals).

The best place for reviews online I've found is Ken Rockwell (http://kenrockwell.com/) - go to the How-To section on his website and start searching.

[livejournal.com profile] puppleball, who went to the zoo with me and got some wonderful shots - they're posted on her LJ - has the same camera, only she bought it with the lens. I already owned two Nikon 35mm lenses, so I didn't bother.

YAY OTTERS!!!!

[identity profile] otterprincess.livejournal.com 2006-02-09 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are all really faboo pictures. But of course the River Otters are my favorite. :D

I followed Jade here. I hope that's okay. ;)

Cute kitty too. I have more pictures of my cat than anything else. *L*
