More fic recs?

Now that I've finished both the series and the movie of Fullmetal Alchemist, I'm ready for FMA fic. Bring it on! But only the REALLY GOOD STUFF.

Remember, I don't give a damn about pairings, and I dislike introspective nazel-gazing stuff that's basically an extended emo character study although most fanfic writers and readers seem not to share this. I like stuff that manages to nail character without being emo about it, and tend to eye AU fic suspiciously. Funny is a bonus, as is plot that doesn't focus solely on romantic relationships if I wanted to read a romance novel, I would be reading a romance novel.

And now I go to bed and await your recs with anticipation.

No character-studies, no stream-of-conciousness, no romance, no AU...

I got nothin'. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
:D Yup, I'm picky about my fic, and really read very little. I don't mind romance in a story, but I don't want the story to be about the romance, if that makes sense. But I really do hate the extended character study ones. WTF happened to plot?

I note, of course, that pr0n doesn't require plot, and in fact too much plot harms it. :) As long as emo character studies are avoided. and I gotta say, Elricest is Totally Not My Thing.

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
See, extended character studies? Are about all I write. XD I R EMO. Except for odd bits of plotless porn and random romance. And a good portion of the fics I like best fall into the same category. So I really can't help you out there. I'm assuming that's a reference to FMA? I don't know that series. Either way, incest tends to be very good or very bad, in my opinion. XD

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
AHAHAHAHA and you were deliberating asking for FMA recs and not general ones, weren't you? I lose at reading comprehension. *le facepalm* At least it sunk in the fifth time I read this post. I suck so hard. *ducks out sheepishly*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
YOUR PUNISHMENT IS TO GO TO MAJOR ARMSTRONG AND COMPLIMENT HIS PHYSIQUE.

XD

I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO THAT IS. *EMO SOB*

lol! The clothing rending would be an appropriate response, actually. ^_~

Major Armstrong (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/telophase14/fullmetal4.jpg).

Prone to ripping of his jacket - he doens't seem to wear a shirt under it - and doing this sort of thing (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/telophase14/52799.jpg), although usually with sparkles all around.

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
....IT BURNS.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
And I just added "FMA" in front of "fic" to make it clearer. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
:) For someone who is as focused on character as I am ... I'd really rather have plot in the fic I read. I think it's partly because they rarely match *my* conception of the character and partly because they're pretty much all about how dark and depressed and emo they are, no matter who the character is. Goku's inner monologue is bloody well not dark, dammit!

It's a genre in FMA fic. I've never even read any FMA fic and I know of the existence of Elricest. AGH

But how do you feel about crossovers?

[identity profile] sub-divided.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
You should have asked this last year, I had a whole long list.

Operation Little Red Riding Hood (http://baka-neko.livejournal.com/76708.html)
Short parody fic.

Desert Fic (http://ciceqi.slashcity.com/FMAcode.htm)
Some Ed/Roy, ends up AU because it was written while the series was still coming out. Ed Goes Into the Desert fic.

Most of these (http://harukami.livejournal.com/326121.html)
Some serious introspection (sorry) and a lot of crack pairing fics.

Frozen Dreams: One (http://vikki.livejournal.com/73824.html) Two (http://vikki.livejournal.com/95311.html)
Case fic, Ed and Al and Mining Town

Contraries (http://www.scimitarsmile.com/alchemy/01fiction/01_sol_sod01.php?title=The%20Shadow%20of%20Desire&author=Sol%201056&list=01_sol)
Long casefic with Ed/Roy-ish overtones

Open Up the Gates (http://www.scimitarsmile.com/alchemy/01fiction/01_pellaz_outg01.php?title=Open%20Up%20the%20Gates&author=Pellaz&list=01_pellaz)
Long post-series fic that broke everyone's hearts, some Ed/alter!Al but it's secondary

Re: But how do you feel about crossovers?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :D

Crossovers I'm not as bothered by, since I have this sort of weird vague sense that all anime series are taking place in the same big world, although you'd have to work really hard to convince me that, say, Utena and Planetes were contemporary. (Utena and Princess Tutu works, though.)

I have the same sort of vague sense about Regency romances, which is why I have this vague feeling that you can't throw a brick in Regency London without hitting half-a-dozen feisty heiresses and bluestockings and you can't walk ten feet without tripping over eight devilish dukes with hearts of gold.

Firefox crashed and took all my FMA bookmarks with it a couple of months ago, so all I have are my bookmarks on LJ to offer.

The Greatest Love Story Never Told!

The FMA brothers fic of PAIN, and anything else I can say about it would be spoilery.

Drabble: "Say you stepped on a land mine."

The Mechanisms of the Game, which is my favorite Mustang/Hawkeye romantic fic by virtue of prying apart the meta of Mustang/Hawkeye romantic fic.

Thank you! I have to work the Ref desk tonight, so I expect that these and the other recs that people left will come in quite handy to combat boredom. XD

[identity profile] ninja-tech.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok. Here is the only author I thought you might enjoy. Most of it is smut mixed with humor. You're standards seem so high...too bad you don't want to read any GW fic. I would have a deep well of really good fics from that fandom to rec. Anywho--check out this author--I really liked "The Third Rule" the best, but that's because I'm a Roy/Ed fanatic.

PS - just noticed some grammar errors in my comment. (the glaring "you're" that should be "your" actually hurts my eyes and brain ... of course, that could also be my hangover.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You've been reading my stuff long enough to realize I'm the last person who'd complain about grammar or typos in an informal context, as long as it's readable. XDDD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
:D I don't know enough about GW to read anything from it, unfortunately. Six or so years ago I started watching it, but the place I rented from was missing one of the tapes in the middle of the series, and I stopped at that point and enver got back into it.

Thanks!

Hughes is a crafty one. He's found an unusual way of utilizing Ed against a serial killer in Baka Neko's "Little Red Cap (http://www.scimitarsmile.com/alchemy/01fiction/01_bakane_lrc.php?title=Little%20Red%20Cap&author=Baka%20Neko&list=01_bakane)." I was wondering if anyone ever took advantage of Ed's tendency to fly off the handle as a weapon....

In Tir Synni's "Armstrong Family Technique (http://www.livejournal.com/users/tir_synni/36399.html#cutid1)" poor Ed doesn't stand a chance against the massage technique handed down through generations!

Oshii's "Stray (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fm_alchemist/2473251.html)" is a short and sharp deathfic.

In "Must Like Cats (http://www.scimitarsmile.com/alchemy/01fiction/01_girlst_mlc.php?title=Must%20Like%20Cats&author=girl_starfish&list=01_girlst)" by girl_starfish the Elric brothers are looking for a girlfriend, but not for the reason everyone thinks they are. This is funny and very sweet. The gaps in their education kill me. (Warning: some typos.)

Ed hates being attracted to Roy Mustang and is sure the bastard is teasing him on purpose. The worst is what Mustang does with his hands (http://www.livejournal.com/community/prolific_geeks/13538.html?#cutid1) in those debriefings, thus the title of Cephied Variable's story. A Freudian slip is about to make things more interesting....

Sleeps With Coyote's "Situation Normal (http://ciceqi.slashcity.com/FMAsituation.htm)" has Edward completely oblivious to his maturing good looks. No one else is. Poor guy.

In femmelethale's "Flush (http://www.livejournal.com/users/femmelethale/11737.html#cutid1)," Roy certainly loves blonds. He's bottoming for Hawkeye and Fullmetal without letting either of them know about the other. But the secrecy doesn't survive.

I also meant to get back to this post...

I went looking to see if I had any marked on ff.net or any other sites and not yet. I do have a couple in the memories of my fic account though.
