Shopping...

The reason I keep coming across anime stuff is that I'm cleaning up the dining/library area, which has served as a junk catchall for the past year, because over the next couple of weeks I'm moving my studio area into there. I did the IKEA thing today - there's been a store open in Frisco, about 45 minutes away, for 6 months now and I kept intending to go. Only got 2 things because I realized quickly that of the $300 I budgeted for this, I was going to ahve to have a good deal of that for the delivery, because even if they fit in my car there was no way I was going to be able to get them out on my own. :)

So I got this desk and this chest of drawers to start off the studio area. I was originally going to buy at least one more table and move the bookshelves over to the area where my work area is currently, but realized that if I didn't I could leave the bookshelves there and buy more bookshelves for the current work space and be a lot happier. And Target has some cheap 5-shelf bookshelves for sale, so I think I may be over there tomorrow.

This is a coffee table I've got my eye on - I like the storage, plus the ability to extend it if necessary. In black-brown, of course, not that birchy color.

I have no idea what I'm going to do with my current desk, which looks sort of like a Stealth bomber. IKEA wanted $60 to take it away, and ... I don't THINK so!

I've used the Jerker for four years now, so let me just welcome you to the community (http://adam.pra.to/content/jerker/). It is a truly great piece of furniture. XD

*snerk* Good lord, I didn't realize it had a cult following. XD

And not just in the human (http://pics.livejournal.com/luxetumbra/pic/0006fsc3/g7) world (http://pics.livejournal.com/luxetumbra/pic/0008836a/g7). XD

That's just freakish.

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] telophase, I suggest listing it for sale on Craigslist for $10, if you live somewhere with a local Craigslist. You want to sell it rather than give it away, because if you try to give it away, a lot of jerks will just decide not to bother and not show up. I hate that. But as soon as any money is involved, people actually show up.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
*pokes about* Ah, DFW does have a Craigslist. Sweet! That's a good idea - I may just do that.

[identity profile] riofriotex.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I second the Craigslist idea. I'm moving 2600 miles and downsizing from 1245 square feet to probably half that. I've used Craigslist to get rid of five big and/or old items so far. I think you could definitely get some money for that desk.

Be sure to include that photo in the ad. I had a buffet I needed to get rid of and had only one response until had a friend with a digital camera - I don't have one :( - come over. I sold the buffet for $100 - perhaps I could have sold it for more, but it's a bear to move so I'm happy.

As for the listing things for free - actually I have gotten a good response for the things I listed that way (an old sewing machine in a cabinet with a broken leg, a dresser with a huge scratch on front). On a couple others, though, (a twin mattress, a futon frame), I wish I had at least started out asking something - you can always pull the ad and repost it with a lower price if there is no interest. I really needed to get rid of the items, and did not want to pay dump fees. Plus it's nice to know someone is getting more use out of them.

I've got about five more things to sell/give away on Craigslist over the next ten days or so.

Man, I'd totally take that desk... The only problem would be getting it down to SATX. Which sucks. ;.; Does it come apart or fold up or anything?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it should, seeing as it came flat-packed and I had to put it together myself. :) If you somehow made it up here in the next few weeks to get it, I'd leave it together because you probably ought to be a part of taking it apart in order to have a vague idea of how to put it back together. :)

[identity profile] kurobahikaru.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that'd probably be a good idea. The other big problem is that we're moving. >XP (I hates it, precious, hates the movingses.) D'you have a specific "few weeks" you'd like me to get it in?

Wow. Even my mom says it's a good deal. (And getting her to agree to using gas? Pulling teeth, I swear. With no anaesthetic. >.<)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Within the next month or six weeks? I've got to be at ConDFW at the end of February, and starting January 28th, my Saturday mornings will be taken up until 1:30 or 2-ish, because I'm signing up for a painting course, but other than that I have no plans in the upcoming weeks.

:D

[identity profile] kurobahikaru.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, shouldn't be a problem. Late afternoon is probably best anyways, since it is a 6- to 8-hour drive. *shakes fist at the constant construction up and down I-35* Would most likely be a Sunday? Since I got sucked into- I mean, employed at the great and mighty Hobby Lobby. (Send me money and I'll get your shinies, oh yes. XD *is such an enabler*) If it's on a Sunday, it won't be for at least 2 weeks; inventory. See me leap for joy. Not.

And maybe I'll drag my mom along and she can go visit her mom while we're there. And maybe they won't try to strangle each other. Or something. How am I related to these people, again?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-03 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Sounds like a plan to me.

[identity profile] kurobahikaru.livejournal.com 2006-01-26 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
*currently posting from sister's laptop, as is only comp in house in working condition* Okay, moving's done-ish... How does next Sunday sound? Feb 4th? I've got to wait for my next paycheck for gas money. ;.;

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-26 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Sunday is the 5th. :D

That weekend I've got the painting class on Saturday morning from 10-1, but I'm free that afternoon, and all Sunday, so any of those times is fine.

[identity profile] kurobahikaru.livejournal.com 2006-01-26 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I have the dumb. I cannot brain tonight. Class tomorrow,must reserve few pitiful cells. ._.;;

Okay, then, Sunday it is. Kidnapping friend-type-boy-creature for slave labor and driving relief; 6-8 hours driving is a killer, and I don't want it to be literal. Mom on not-strangling-grandma streak again... best to keep them apart. *eyeroll* Can I disown them and have you adopt me instead? I'd sell them for parts, but I'm not sure I'd get anything. (Wouldn't sell the brother, though. I've put too much time and energy into warping him to my will teaching him to be a valued member of fannish society. He bathes. I'm so proud. *sniff)

And it is after midnight and I have to get up early tomorrow... If I didn't like doing this to myself I'd quit, right?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-26 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
And do ya want a free 19" monitor? :D

[identity profile] kurobahikaru.livejournal.com 2006-01-26 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sure! Yay free stuff! XD

Speaking of free, did you want me to pay for the desk, $10 or whatever? It wouldn't be a problem if you do. ^.^

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-26 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. Payment enough to get it the hell out of here. :) And the monitor, too - it's just taking up a big spot that the cat wants to sit on. I can't really do any more cleaning/rearranging until it's gone, because it's taking up a big area of space that I need to shift things *into* to make room for other things. XD

It's not the best of monitors, I got it refurbished to start with, but it's big and the last time I checked, two months ago, it worked. :D

'Tis a good thing you're bringing help - I'm not sure my knee would thank me for crawling around under it at the moment. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-03 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you coming up? On Sunday (the 5th)? Let me know either way - I need to know so I can make plans if you're not showing.

And I rahter think you need, say, my address. :) Email telophase14 (at) gmail (dot) com

[identity profile] kurobahikaru.livejournal.com 2006-02-04 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I find it hilarious that I get home from work to tell you I'm heading up Sunday and I'll need your address to find this reply in my inbox. XD

Yes, still coming, and thank God for church, since everyone will be there instead of clogging I-35... Ah, the upsides to living in the south. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-02-04 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
OK - if at all possible, it would be very very nice to get it done about noon, because a friend of mine and I were starting to make tentative plans to go take photos at the Dallas zoo at 2. :) (The zoo closes at 4 on Sundays.)

[identity profile] thomasyan.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you going to get a keyboard tray for the desk? I'm worried about RSI from the desk in my basement and thinking about getting a tray. Only thing is, it looks like a good tray costs as much as the desk itself, or even more!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I probably will, they just didn't have any obvious at the time. Their catalog sells one specifically for that desk at $10, but I may look at slightly more sturdy ones at Office Depot or something. My chair goes pretty high, though, and my graphics tablet has a long enough cord that I can put it on my lap when I need to draw, so it's not an immediate problem. (My RSI flares up more with a mouse than with the keyboard.)

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
HOLY HECK I WANT A DESK LIKE THAT.

[identity profile] rilina.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister has that coffee table. It's very nice, though occasionally I'll put my feet up on it and end up pushing one of the top panels halfway off the thing.

If Craigslist doesn't work out, you might also try freecycle.org (http://www.freecycle.org/).
