Heads up...

... for the probably none teo or three of you that read my journal, are interested in manga analysis, and who don't follow [livejournal.com profile] manga_talk. [livejournal.com profile] sub_divided just posted a long-ass interesting essay about differences in Death Note between official translations from Viz and fan translations. And - yay! - doesn't get wanky about fan vs. official, instead focuses on how the changes affect the characterization and mood.

I had to resist linking to fanfic to prove my point, haha. They aren't huge differences, but when you're reading something that closely? I can think of several stories off the top of my head that rely on lines from the scanlations that don't exist -- or exist differently -- in the official release.

It is long-ass.

Hee - I remember once upon a time reading Orphen fanfic based on the anime - well, very obviously based on the English dubs of the anime. If you haven't watched it, the character Stephanie who shows up in a couple of episodes is Orphen former partner (er, professional, not personal), and is also a crossdressing man. This fact, obvious in the sub because they comment on it, is not present in the dub. Reading the Orphen/Stephanie pairings was always funny when they wrote Stephanie as a biological woman. Well, funny to me at least. :D

I've seen the end of the Orphen anime and the beginning of the Orphen manga. And I've given up on the Orphen PS game becuase it is just STUPID, arrrg! Damn box puzzles!

Anyway, I've never me Stephanie but I'm still amused. Reminds me of all the Sailor Moon villains who had secrit sex changes operations from original to dub. (There were...a LOT of crossdressing male villains in that series. Like, an inordinate amount. They had to cut back the nunber for the liveaction version because that kind of crossdressing is hard to pull off with real actors.)

The Orphen anime and manga tend to differ in a lot of respects, but I don't know how many because I haven't read that far - just the first two books in translation. I own all five books plus the sixth parody volume* in Japanese, and I could tell just from there that the anime sort of wandered in and out of manga continuity.

I own the first series and watched them all in subs, then I rented the second and started watching it in dub, because I was drawing on a big project at the time and couldn't afford the time looking at the screen to read the subs. And ... damn, was it funny! I didn't remember the first series beign that funny. And one day I wasn't drawing, and turned on the subtitles to read them at the same time to compare the translations, as I like to do at times, and ... my God were they unfunny. And unfunny in that trying-to-be-funny-but-completely-misunderstanding-the-concept way. And the story was slightly different between them, too. Not in huge respects, but in little details. At any rate, the dub was much better than the sub. I'm usually a sub snob, but for Orphen season 2 I'll make an exception.

And now I have to go back and rewatch season 1 in the dub to see if that was as funny as season 2.

Stephanie is completely female and stacked, just going by appearance. You have to rely entirely on dialogue between other characters to realize she's a crossdresser. She even marries her boyfriend at some point. XD It's a compeltely understandable mistake for fic writers, and I'd even be behind keeping her female and marking the fic "dub continuity" if you really wanted to write Orphen in a het relationship with the only female who is not TOTALLY FUCKING ANNOYING in some way, but when it's done all-unknowingly ... hee.

* I think it's a parody volume, but it's been a while since I looked at it. It might ahve just one parody story in it/
