:D I've read Kotaku's review, and playing it is not for me (even once it's on Windows) because I don't care enough this year but I am really happy even so about some of the (seemingly random) details and bits of depth.
It's possible it will eventually be ported to the PC, although it's a PS4 exclusive right now. But you should be able to find some Let's Plays on YouTube so you can at least watch it vicariously. XD
I have found out that the game's honor system doesn't affect the ending, but if you do un-samurai-like things such as sneaking around, attacking from cover, and assassinating instead of face-to-face open combat, the weather gets worse! As myrialux puts it, "This is not a deterrent!" So you can roleplay a bit as you decide what your version of Lord Sakai does.
It's set in 1274, during the Mongol invasion attempt of Japan, on the island of Tsushima (well, that part's obvious if you know of the island). In the real version of the battle that opens the game, all the samurai were killed, but in the game, you survive and then you get to run around doing things that cause your legend to grow.
myrialux saw the fox and started to follow it, then discovered that it leads you to a tiny Inari shrine, and there's 20 of them in the game. And then he approached the fox which LETS YOU PET IT! The game makers know what's really important.
Also we have just met a badass older lady head of a samurai clan who is (rot13 for minor spoilers in case anyone reading is going to play) niratvat gur qrngu bs nyy bs ure pyna.
The birds don't go to specific things the way the foxes do. As far as I can tell they just lead you towards an interesting thing, and then disappear. Could be a bamboo stand, could be a haiku place, could be a hot spring, whatever.
They're a pain to follow in areas with golden tree leaves, but the Super Focus Listening Extra Slow mode makes it a little easier to spot them if you don't mind having to trudge to do it.
Anyway, yeah, the game is just glorious to look at, and so far myrialux has good things to say about the game mechanics. He also really likes that so far the combat isn't 95% of the game, and the fights are reasonably short. (Of course we just came off of Uncharted 2, where the combat sections are tediously long....)
