Shook up a bit

Yesterday evening, when we were on the way home from a grocery run, I was driving [personal profile] myrialux's car and on the tollway ran over some weird piece of metal machinery that presumably fell off the back of someone's truck.

No harm to the car--[personal profile] myrialux took it to a mechanic this morning and they inspected it, didn't find anything, but rebalanced the tires just in case--and no serious harm to us, other than being kinda shook up, plus I think I strained a muscle in my neck/shoulder. (This would be the opposite side of the one I strained last year and spent most of a year trying to fix. :/) Anyway, it's feeling fine at the moment, other than a small headache, which I think is a continuation of the one I've had all week. (I didn't hit my head or get whiplash or anything.)

Neither of us has a clue what the thing was that I ran over. [personal profile] myrialux says when he first saw it, he thought it was a shoe. I thought it was a garbage bag. It was significantly larger than both of us realized, and after I ran over it--I squared up and aimed directly over it when I realized there was no way to swerve--and it got caught and made a horrible noise, I pulled over. [personal profile] myrialux found it and showed it to me--some sort of vaguely conical/pyramidal contraption that looked like it was made out of bent fan blades. Didn't think to take a picture. :) There was a city truck some way behind us on the side of the road and two guys in orange vests picking stuff up, so I think it was not the only thing that fell off the back of whatever truck it was.

Anyway, [personal profile] myrialux assures me that were was somebody directly to our left--I don't remember--and I do remember that the shoulder was pretty much nonexistent at that point, so there was no way to avoid hitting it at highway speed, even if I'd braked hard. At least I squared up on it and didn't hit it with a tire, because that would have gone very badly. And at least we weren't in my car, which has a lower wheel base and probably wouldn't have gotten out of it with as little damage.

Phew. Of the possible outcomes, 'somewhat shaken' is pretty darn good. Hope the muscle and headache clear up soon.

Yikes. Sorry someone was trashing the road. I'm glad you made your Driving roll. Here's hoping for a quick recovery.
