Ouch
I sprained my foot at 2:30AM thanks to a cat. I was in the bathroom, she
was in front of me, I attempted to step over her, she bolted right where my
foot was going down, and in an effort to not kill her, somehow my foot
ended up hitting the floor the wrong way.
I spent most of the rest of the night between drowsing and dreaming that I
was telling Toby about it and lying awake going AUGH THIS HURTS
No it didn’t occur to me to ice it.
The health care system our doc works in has after-hours clinics so we went
there this morning. Coincidentally our doc was there today, which was quite
nice. Got my foot x-rayed to rule out a break, got a scrip for a painkiller
to take at night. As I have some flat, stuff sandals she didn’t prescribe a
surgical shoe, on the basis that it usually makes people’s knee hurt
because it’s not the same thickness as the shoe on the other foot.
And of course I hobbled around the grocery store as we were waiting for the
pharmacy to fill the prescription, but that means now a pork shoulder is
roasting so we can eat off that for the next few days.
Toby is off at Target getting some bath mats that are light colored and
won’t hide the cat at night. Not that it would have helped last night, but
she likes to sleep on them at night and we’ve both accidentally kicked her
while shuffling into the bathroom in the dark.
Ah well.

That's pretty... stubborn of Nefer, to persist in lying where she's been kicked before! She showed you though! Ha ha! (Does picking up the bathmat work, or does she just lie there anyway? And what is it with bathmats---all my cats have loved them too. Special feets smells?)
Hope it feels better soon! Gentle massage can help keep it from stiffening up too much.

Our new rule now is to ALWAYS shuffle instead of trying to step over her.
Sora hates bathmats, by the way! I think it's something to do with the texture, but I'm not sure--as a kitten he'd fight the bathmats, and my oldest one still has holes in the bottom from where he tried to disembowel it. Nowadays he just walks around it or jumps over it as necessary. He'll walk on them only if there's no other way, and does it as quickly as possible.

It is unfortunate that the bathmats vanquished Sora in the long run and traumatized him.

I have the small black cat of doom, who is very easy to trip over in the dark (being, you know, black) and who also does not make any noise as a rule. Fortunately, she has learned to mostly stay out from under my feet at night (and instead sprawl and take over more of the bed I was just in...) but I live in fear of something like that.
I hope the pain eases off soon!

Hm, I wonder if glow-in-the-dark mats are an untapped market....

(I've had enough sprains that I've started wearing combat boots full time for support. Maybe I need to start doing that in the house.)

I have some topical cream suggestions from my physiotherapist if you would like them: let me know, I don't wanna be unsolicited advicey at you.

Voltaren Gel - there are also cheaper generics, look for diclofenac gel. The only advantage of the brand name type is that the tubes are easier to squeeze (soft plastic tubes instead of metal tubes.)
DO NOT LET CATS LICK VOLTAREN GEL.

So many times I've had to step awkwardly to avoid stepping on a cat or a dog...it's a wonder we aren't all hobbling around all the time.

I read an AskReddit thread some time back that wanted healthcare pros to explain what was dangerous about everyday things that nobody thought about, and several of them chimed in that tripping over household pets brought a lot of people in to the ER< especially the elderly. I totally believe it.
