Once more unto the breach
So! Murderface decided that the house in Whiterun wasn't good enough almost immediately after buying it, and thus decided he needed to purchase land and build one. There is as of yet no mod on the PS4 (and perhaps not on any other platform, but I haven't looked) that allows you to rent out houses you are not living in for gold, which I think should be a priority for modbuilders, so it's just sitting there.
But that meant when the jarl of Falkreath summoned him to run a trivial errand, he did so because once you make nice to the Jarl he lets you buy land.
Doesn't he just have one of those faces that makes your hand itch to punch it?

Murderface showed great restraint in not actually punching the Jarl, which just goes to show that his executive functioning is not completely impaired, and instead killed the bandit leader the Jarl asked him to (because the bandits had stopped giving kickbacks to the Jarl, I believe, but Murderface doesn't care).
And here is a photo of the goat in Falkreath that really likes to walk into this fence.

While out on the quest, Serana and Murderface came across a wounded hunter sitting on a log outside a cave. While Murderface was inquiringto see if he was worth killing for loot if he could help him, Serana abruptly decided she was tired of walking and sat down on the hunter's feet.

The hunter explained that he and a couple of buddies were hunting and chased their prey into the cave, to be ambushed by spriggans. He asked for help dealing with the spriggans so he could recover their bodies. Murderface shrugged and said why not, heading into the cave after accepting the hunter's request to come with him and help.
The hunter did not know Murderface very well, unfortunately. During the resulting scrimmage, Murderface shot Serana with a crossbow, which fazed her not at all, and then accidentally shot the hunter, killing him. Oops. Murderface remembered his Resurrect spell, which I hadn't tried since I installed the mod, and tried it out on the hunter, after looting his body, of course. Hunter-Bob got up, but since he missed the end of the fight what with being dead and all, he missed the trigger that completed the quest and thus remained stuck in my-friends-are-dead mode and wouldn't recognize that the spriggans were dead.
After consulting the wikigods, I learned that the reward was just the hunter's lucky dagger that didn't really have any useful powers or qualities, so Murderface chalked it up as a learning experience and left.
After this, Murderface decided he neeeeeeeeded better armor, and thus got himself some elven stuff and enchanted it up.

This time he remembered to name all of the pieces at the right point in the enchanting process.
They returned to Falkreath in the dead of night. Murderface snuck into the Jarl's bedroom and was about to stand up and poke him awake when the Jarl's programming swept into Finished Quest Mode. The Jarl stood up and started talking, keeping Murderface stuck in the crouched position looking up at him for the entire conversation. The screenshots resulting therefore make it look like the Jarl is rewarding Murderface for significantly more...personal service.

Being Thane also confers a housecarl, Rayya, also voiced by Claudia Christian.

Murderface killed Raya dead in his previous incarnation, so in this one she's assigned to his new house, but before the house was built she remained in the Jarl's longhouse, sitting on this bench. Murderface attempted to take a selfie with her in his fancy new armor...

OMG SERANA WOULD YOU JUST GET OUT OF THE PICTURE?!
And to show you just how annoying the Jarl of Falkreath is, he can't even be bothered to make it all the way to his throne before sitting.

Time to build!
Murderface made his way to his new land on the lake shore. The summoning circle with the necromancer was still there, so he shot the necromancer, looted her, and took a selfie.

Cleanup complete, he marked out the foundation for his new house.

I'll leave you all there to wonder what options he decided to build onto his house this time.

I'm still fumbling my way through this. How important is the main storyline, for instance? I've just done the first bits in Whiterun, got my reward, and was promptly told I urgently needed to go and see the next guys - what I'd like to do is go back and collect some ore and level up my smithing skills and do a side quest given in Riverwood, and just explore a little.
(Have not built a house. Have not worked out how that whole settling down thing works. Also have not worked out how companions work, people just seem to avoid me? I get a bit of small talk, and that's it.)
Looking forward to further adventures of Murderface 2.0.

The only thing is that you can't really talk to the Jarl of Whiterun if you haven't killed the dragon because he's all "Why haven't you killed the dragon yet?!" But nobody else cares, except for the people worriedly talking about the dragon problem. XD There's a ton of quests and a number of questlines you can do without doing the main one. I keep discovering new ones...Toby's on his fourth run and still discovers new quests.
The settling thing (and adopting) requires the Hearthfire DLC if you want to build a house, but you can buy a few houses in towns otherwise. You do a set number of small quests for Jarls and their people (3-5 depending on the size of the hold), and once you've proven yourself a friend of the people, the Jarl allows you to either purchase a house or purchase land on which to build a house. If you want to eventually adopt, you'll need a house where you can build or buy children's beds and a chest for each to put their stuff in. If you get named Thane of a place you get assigned a housecarl, who can furnish a house for you if you just shovel gold at them so you don't have to buy or make it (or in Whiterun, you can buy it from the Jarl's steward if you buy Breezehome from him) if you assign the housecarl to your home.
If you do decide to adopt, the only place the kids seem 100% happy is the lake house--in the other spots, the kids complain occasionally about being scared.
NPCs who are companions will have an option in the dialog choices for you to say "Come with me" or to hire them. Sometimes you need to do a service for them in order for the option to show up. The one companion I know of in Whiterun is Jenassa the mercenary, who hangs out in the inn across the street from Warmaiden's. For 500 gold she'll follow you anywhere.
